It seems crazy now that you would include your race in an ad for a roommate.

Looking forward to not watching this unoriginal, unnecessary waste of time and money on Netflix

I'm just curious what the title is gonna be, Jenna can get away with keeping the original title, but I doubt they would because "look what year we live in" and despite her similarity Taylor is black.
Which way will it go.
And who is the crazy one?
Is Jenna gonna get accused of black face?
Slippery slope this...

Really scrapping the bottom of the barrel to remake stuff. God forbid Hollywood actually came up with something new.

The problem is that, in general, it doesn't seem like people want new shit.
I think people do. What they DO NOT want is old shit given a "for modern audiences" polish. The basic story of SWF is pretty simple and easy to adapt. But the entire concept of the title "Single White Female seeks Same" is rooted in the old want ads and has no resonance to the youth audience today. That catchy title is useless now and old farts like me who saw SWF in the theater will have no attachment to this new one (unless it's a hard R erotic thriller, perhaps). But I've never read the source material for the film, so maybe there is more to it.

But the title is broken and any new title will not have any connection to the old IP.

What makes you think they do want something original?

I don't think I've ever seen a good movie remake. Dawn of the Dead maybe but even that is debatable. This looks like another butchering of a 90s classic.

Great explanation.

We have proof of people getting fed up with Hollywood, the reason why cinema is dying. The creative bankruptcy of this era is mind-numbing.

The Thing from 1982 and Night of the Living Dead from 1991 are technically remakes. Couldn't name a good one from the last 10+ years, though. ;)

Stalker "Hi, I identified as white and cis female".
That would actually be a fun play on the title. An ultra-woke white lady has to deal with a trans-racial trans-gender psychopath that keeps throwing all their woke ideology back at them. You could have a fairly serious examination of what constitutes race, culture, and gender within a stalker killer framework.

But the audience aren't turning up for original stuff. You can look at the worldwide box office from last year and the top 20 films in it only has one, a Chinese film called Successor, that's original and not a remake, adaptation or part of an going series/franchise. You can look at other recent years and see that's not a one off but part of an ongoing trend.

Last year Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time, although that's now been surpassed by Ne Zha 2. There's also stuff like Deadpool & Wolverine and Moana 2 which did well. So the audience will turn up for stuff but what catches their interest are things they're already familiar with. The studios are going to make more of what the audience are responding to. If the audience just wants more of the same then that's what they'll get. Yeh we've had some big franchise releases that have bombed but if people were sick of the remakes and sequels then they might look for more original releases. But they aren't. When you look back at the box office totals for the year you also notice a shift to things being dominated by stuff for kids. So I think that's another way things have regressed.

Personally, there's still plenty of original films getting made that I enjoy. I'd certainly like more of a shift to original releases but those films are out there. I think it's a two-way thing. If we're going to condemn studios for being more risk-averse than ever, which we should, then audiences also bear some responsibility for how they respond to releases, ultimately shaping what gets produced.

I think some of the problem is that hollywood only wants to fund "safe" projects which are largely sequels, remakes, or adaptations. Who can command big bucks for a wholly novel idea?

More of the problem, i think, is that old stuff is TOO accessible today, so its easy to make a sequel to a 10 year old film or whatever because everyone can go stream it versus the 80's and before where films get memory holed quickly. Add in the RIDICULOUS budgets for a big film today and the total lack of movie stars like Arnie that can sell a new IP just because he is in it, so it's all about the goodwill of the IP and not about the integrity of the project.

Not to mention the destructured way to sell a movie today. You can't rely on a captive pre-movie audience for trailers now, it's hard to reliably direct the message through the internet versus the old "Access Hollywood" show and like 3 main critics that decided everything.

I kid you not I have a livestream open in another tab and the guy is literally talking about race swapping white people just as I saw this thread. :messenger_tears_of_joy:
He's just said it always goes in one direction (ie. white characters or even historical people being swapped out).

The script requires both leads look similar
Sorta..... maybe pass as sisters in dim light, but not twins. Part of it, I think, is one NOT looking that similar but trying really hard. But I"ve not seen these two new actress side by side so I'm sure where are more differences than those pics suggest.
