007 First Light: Hands on Previews

WTF, this James Bond doesn't have license to kill.
He just has the same right as a normal civilian, to kill only in self defense situations.
Negative the dude has a license to do whatever the fuck he likes, game just took a nose dive

Yes, James Bond holds a "license to kill" as a "00" (Double-O) agent in MI6. This signifies authorization to use lethal force at his discretion in the line of duty, providing legal immunity under UK law for actions taken on missions abroad.
Reddit +2
Key Aspects of Bond's "License"
  • 00 Designation: The "00" prefix indicates the agent has passed training in lethal operations, authorizing them to kill in cold blood while on assignment.
  • Official Duties: It is not a license to kill at will, but to act within the context of national security.
  • Revocable:
The license can be suspended or revoked by his superiors, as seen in the film Licence to Kill.
    • Limits: The license does not permit killing in a personal vendetta and does not apply to everyone.
The concept is derived from Ian Fleming's novels, where 007 and other 00 agents are authorized to operate outside traditional rules of engagement.

Everybody would just run and gun through the game otherwise? 🤷‍♂️ I can see why they would do that....from a "gaming" perspective.

I'm all for a 3rd person action extravaganza when done correctly. Nothing has topped UC 2 so far unfortunately.
When I first played Uncharted series it was interesting to see "Hollywood" style action movie in game form but for me the novelty of that wore off for a long time and just no longer interested in that type games anymore.

Fair enough. I don't think games have got anywhere close to the Hollywood style action as much as that game did. But that might be my rose tinted spec's talking, i've not played it since release.

These days I want my games to feel gamey, it's kinda my reason why I really liked Pragmata. It a game feels gamey ass game and not at all shy about it.

Funny you mention that game, I'm playing right now on the train. The most gamey game I've played in a while. Harks back to the 16bit era in a way. I'm enjoying a fair bit more than I thought I would.

Have there ever been previews where someone says look guys it's a bit shit really?

I dont understand the point of these previews when its just an extension of marketing
Yeah, I remember the DA: Veilguard impressions. "Return to form" and "The series Mass Effect 2 moment".

Nd was really a couple of generations forward with melee animations in tlou2 uh...
They were among the best, but it's more accurate to say that todays developers are a couple generations behind. It is honestly astounding how utterly terrible most devs are at their jobs these days.

In those few seconds, we know they got the animations nailed at least. Here's a fantastic breakdown of that:

The weight shifting and weapon handling are all *chef's kiss*

And we know rays are being traced. The rest, yeah will have to wait and see. With so much motion blur, there's not much to analyze yet.

None of the footage in that trailer was real gameplay. Everything was completely scripted.

Heads up to anyone who is interested in the game. Theres a free playable Hitman Scenario (Elusive Targets) on Steam where you confront La Chiffre (Casino Royale) as Agent 47. Succeed and you get a free Casino Costume for Bond in First Light.

I'm not really interested in what games journalists or youtubers have to say, so thankfully there are videos like this one that are just pure gameplay

What I really want to know is if you can spend time walking around and planning out your approach before you spring into action. That's the best part of Hitman.

Sure. Just like any of their announcement trailers. Tlou 2 is industry leading in gameplay animations despite falling short of the trailer, so to what extent intergalactic matches their goal remains to be seen. We are just commenting on how much attention has already been put into the scripting, which sets expectations for the final game

You have to read between the lines - if they aren't jizzing over every aspect of it then it is probably a bit shit.

played the demos when they came out and thought "theres basically no game here"
set pieces and window dressing

years later someone gave me uncharter2 and i tried... but hated it

I would say at beginning it was nice novelty but now I just have zero desire to play Uncharted style games.

I still fucking remember the glowing previews for that wet fart of dragon smegma 2 :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Most previews will be positive, that way they can continue to get invited to play future games early.

It's also why no game "journalists" will ever call out R* for their bullshit on releasing PC versions of their games a year later, just to get people to double dip.

This guy didn't point out any of the obvious flaws that anyone can see in the game footage he's provided.
The game's PG instead of the AAA standard PG-13/M and has no real gore.

I expect animation quality will not live up to TLOU 2. A lot of the talent that worked on that game is gone and the studio will be scrambling to rush this out given their severe blunder with GAAS.

James Bond doesn't have 00 status from the get go. If this is an origin story, he doesn't have an unrestricted license to kill in chapter 2. Don't know if that restriction changes later in the game, but it makes narrative sense at least early on. If they keep it throughout, then it's a forced gimmick to maintain the stealth vs combat flow. I'm fine with that, but it's hard to judge atm.

I noticed in a video they said sometimes 007 is granted a license to kill by MI6 based on the circumstances, so they made a gameplay-thing out of this.

PCGamer preview is pretty scathing and bad.

"What I saw had me feeling that the studio has not leaned into its strengths, trading the absurd clockwork worlds of Agent 47 for a more tightly choreographed, linear, and "cinematic" game that IO has never been all that good at."

- Limited sandbox world
- You can't go guns blazing unless the enemy shoots you first or you are given the signal to kill
- You can't lift bodies, carry them or anything, ( WTF?!!) "not move my enemies once they fell unconscious"
- AI is kinda weak, "Your enemies are dumb as a bag of hammers, at least on the standard difficulty I was playing on,"
- "modest, sometimes archaic third-person action game with some neat but underdeveloped ideas. And a very annoying protagonist."
- "A lite sandbox leads to a stealth section which leads to a gunfight which leads to a vehicle chase and a boss battle"
- "The guns feel a lot less well-realised than the fistfights"

- melee combat actually feels good.
- boss battles are creative and good

Added to OP. Outside of the AI and gun combat criticism, it sounds a bit like they just want yet another hitman sequel

Looks aight, I'll probably get it as soon as it gets on sale though, IO doesn't have the best record when it comes to day 1 optimization.

Yes. It seems they encouraged previewers to play the last level at a different difficulty setting and plan a different route. They said it felt like a new game when they tried it on hard. They had enough tools and options like Hitman (outside of disguises and hiding bodies) and were forced to think about their approach.

People are shocked that a 007 game doesn't play like a Hitman game, and that's somehow a bad thing.
Gamers truly have the industry they deserve.

People genuinely thought this was going to be a bad game?

You fuckers are so wrapped up in being angry because of "woke" bond ya'll forgot who we were fucking with (IOI).

Devs have done banger after banger.

The doubt was always retarded.

I preordered this months ago.

Well, the entire reason why anyone would want a 007 game from IO Interactive in particular is because Hitman already feels like a 007 game in many ways. I think it makes more sense than making it an Uncharted game. The 007 movies, at least the early ones, aren't exactly action movies, more thrillers. So, people feeling disappointed with everything that gets away from Hitman makes sense to me.

The problem i always had with Hitman was that the world felt so stale, all the characters included Agent 47 felt like mannequins.

This was my concern when IO interactive were taking on 007 games and it kinda looks like this game will have the same problems.

With regards to the Absolution remarks from PC Gamer... that's fine by me! I loved that. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

That said I take anything they say with a grain of salt as that outlet is fucking trash.

Hitman Absolution was a stinking pile of garbage. Mere mention of that as a point of comparison has me concerned. But then again, the videos look like the linear, set-piece driven Uncharted sequel i've wanted for so long in gaming's sea of open world crapola. I think I will give it a chance and pick it up.

I just can't get past the fact how much Bond looks like Henry / Tom McKay.

I wrote this off initially due to the woke shite that's supposedly in it, but the more I see the more I'm liking this tbh. Hitman WOA is one of my goats, but Absolution is wank so I'm a bit wary. Will probably pick it up at some point on sale.
