As the Raw and Smackdown (and sometimes TNA) threads are relatively small, I thought this week it'd be cool to experiment with making a single thread for discussion of the shows and news...

Anyhoo.

Rajah has an update that reads as such:

People in attendance at last night’s Royal Rumble pay per view have said that once the Kurt Angle vs. Mark Henry main event for the World Championship began, many fans began heading for the exits.

Miami Heat Center Shaquille O’Neal was backstage at last night’s Royal Rumble PPV. I’m assuming that he flew in from Houston and went straight to the arena as the Heat played the Rockets yesterday. It is still unknown as to whether or not they filmed any follow up footage with Carlito.

WWE.com reported that Rey Mysterio was the first superstar to ever enter the Royal Rumble at Number 2 and win, however, that is incorrect. Vince McMahon entered the match at Number 2 in 1999 and was victorious.

1. No surprise there, nobody expected it to be good. Plus that title match right beforehand was a real stinker.
2. I hope to god that Shaq/Carlito actually goes somewhere. With Carlito winning, of course.
3. Hahaha, oh continuity.

Of course, the Rumble makes for a rather strange set of card rumors...

Angle/Orton
Cena/HHH
Shawn/Vince
Edge/Foley

Angle jobbing to a relatively new guy? HHH holding the title at the end of the show? A legendary wrestler against the Genetic Jackhammer? Did I get sent back to Wrestlemania 19?

And finally, th' Raw preview.

Hot on the heels of the Royal Rumble, “The Champ” is back as RAW rolls into Orlando, Florida, tonight.

Last night, John Cena defeated Edge at the Royal Rumble to once again become WWE Champion. After the match, Edge was irate when Todd Grisham asked him about becoming the “transitional champion” he said he wouldn’t be. With a full 24 hours to soak it in, will the Rated R Superstar have anything to say about losing the WWE Championship?

Also last night, Triple H nearly went the distance, being the second-to-last man eliminated from the Royal Rumble Match after drawing No. 1. Will the Game have anything to say about his performance?

Plus, Gregory Helms shocked everyone by entering the Open Invitational Match at the Royal Rumble, outlasting five SmackDown Superstars to become the new Cruiserweight Champion. What’s next for the former superhero now that he had brought the gold to RAW?

Find out the answers to these questions and more tonight at 9/8 CT on the USA Network.

I hope that WWE is going to do something with all those cruisers on Smackdown. Giving Helms the title could make for an interesting chase.

Cena as champ...I really hope that HHH, Dusty or someone is mentoring him. While Edge was different as champ, with the mechandise Cena is pulling in, you knew it wouldn't last. I was talking to DM Satruday and saw all this new Cena stuff on the wweshopzone.com, we both knew what was going to happen after that. Might not be best for the company in the angle/storyline sense, but economically it makes sense and that is the bottom line for sure.

I am really surprised at the restaint HHH has had at not putting the title around his waist yet. I would have to think that at WM that will change, but with Steph pregnant, maybe his mind is elsewhere.

Moondog Spot?

WATE TV in Pittsburgh reported tonight that Mark Madden, 45, suffered a heart attack and is in stable condition. No other details are available at the moment.

Meltzer said Shaq wants a match, but the Heat play basketball through atleast May. Summerslam may be open if they want to pull it.

Great, so Helms takes the Cruiserweight belt to RAW where there aren't any cruiserweights.

He's on Smackdown now. :)

edit: Yeah Dskillz, Cena pushes a LOT of merch. Mostly to the Jr. High-High School girls. Orton's got about the same fanbase, although the age seems to be skewed a slight bit older.

Tonight's Raw should let us know where they're going for the most part... I can't imagine HHH being at WM and not being in the main event, but I'd sure rather he wasn't.

I wonder if we'll end up seeing the entire McMahon family v HBK, over the next two months. I sure hope not, because after seeing Linda take a stunner so poorly... HBK might kick her head off on accident...

Cena sucks. Triple H is a dick. Angle is God along with Brett Hart. Random homoerotic picture of HBK. TNA is awesome. Vince doesn't know what he is doing. Random Nostalgia involving either Stone Cold, Hulk Hogan, The Rock, or Ric Flair and how good it use to be. Wrestlemania is going to blow. All the women divas suck. Somebody asking what's going on after not having watched for two years.

/From from what I normally see thread covered.

You missed "wayward newbie gaffer comes in, makes fun of wrestling and gets banned", but that doesn't happen as often anymore.

They were retarded for doing the Rumble match first and then the two title matches. It seems like they pretty much did that solely so UT could come out and pointlessly destroy the ring.

I hope they wind up doing HBK vs Shane at WM22. They couldn't get the Rock and Vince is 60. HBK/Shane would be infinitely better than HBK/Vince. Cena/HHH for WM looks like a lock after the Royal Rumble. Eveything else is kind of up in the air.

:lol Sorry. I'm in a foul mood this morning at work for some reason. I should know better to post than when I'm in a hater-rific mood.

I was told they did it in the middle so they wouldn't run out of time like last year.

Yeah, like having a pyro show that destroys the ring didn't have anything to do with it. ;)

that's the conclusion I came up with. The ending to the PPV just felt real flat with the Rumble match already out of the way and Mark Henry main eventing. Would've been a great way to send people home with Rey winning.

As a newbie, am I allowed to join the GAF fantasy league or not?

Also, did the Shaq thing just start at the rumble or is there something that I missed?

Regardless of Cena pushing merch, he didn't need the title to do so.

Look back at Austin and Rock (there's your nostalgia for this post), both were HUGE merch sellers and more often than not the had n title to help them up.

Basically I see it as using the title to prop up a failing project as far as the wrestling audience is concerned. Sure, your kids and girls wil lvoe him no matter what...but it all seems to fall apart between the ropes. It's like Jeff Hardy just on a much larger scale.

Like i said before...putting the title back on Cena was a fucking stupid move. They blew any momentum they had in one fell swoop. Their high ratings....gone now. After 3 weeks it's back to status quo. Cena is champ and now HHH will be chasing.....yawn.

Jeff Hardy fucking rocked, man. He needs to lay off the drugs and get to working again, though.

Please tell me you're joking.....

He had a couple decent matches. Those being against RVD at InVasion (I was there!) and the ladder match against Taker that they damn near had him win.

He was always much better when they had his then NOT insane brother as his tether to reality. Tag team, awesome. Jeff Hadry the singles wrestler? Not so much...

Hardy Boys rocked when they were playing the hippie 60's gimmick before Freebird turned them evil.

I'd also include his match against Brock in his list of well-worked matches.

TNA NEWS!

-- Spike TV is said to be just as much behind bringing Sting in as TNA was. Some guys in TNA were very upset with Sting being brought in and getting all that money instead of some of the wrestlers who have been with them for the long run. However, since he’s been backstage, the attitude towards him has changed due to his willingness to genuinely help out the company.

-- Christian recently stated in an interview that even if TNA wasn’t an option, he still would have left WWE. He said that the TNA locker room is more upbeat, and TNA being there definitely helped his decision to leave WWE.

-- According to several live reports, when Jeff Jarrett has been cutting promos lately the crowd’s “boring” chants at TNA tapings have drowned out the sound system in the building. The company viewpoint is that fans, both in Orlando and on the internet, are tired of Jarrett.

-- TNA is planning another all-cage match PPV for this April. They will keep the same Lockdown title for the event that they used last year.

--- Dixie Carter recently brought up doing a house show tour this year with TNA again in an interview.

-- There are rumblings backstage that Low Ki may be coming back. Nobody ever thought this would happen due to the backstage heat he had on him when he left the company.

-- There is once again talk of TNA bringing in more wrestlers from Mexico.

-- Right now it looks like Spike TV will be moving TNA iMPACT to a Thursday night timeslot at some point. Spike TV has also expressed interest in giving them a better replay timeslot than their Monday midnight airing, despite the fact that a 0.5 rating in that timeslot is a good number. Some are second-guessing the decision to put them on Thursday nights. Mainly due to the fact that Thursdays have lots of competition all night from other networks, such as CBS’ lineup of Survivor, CSI, and Without A Trace.

As for the Thursday slot and Spike worrying about audience size.... Well, it worked for UPN back in the day and the same shows were on. It could work for Spike as well. Very different audiences.

Ok, i can give you that one too. He sold the beating he took from Lesnar pretty well.

No I didn't mean you. You were spot on. I just meant that, for a good while a few months back, every wrestling thread would lead to a ban.

The Smackdown preview seems to suggest that isn't entirely true...

Many questions are left unanswered as the SmackDown Superstars get set to invade Orlando, Florida, this Friday night.

At the Royal Rumble, Rey Mysterio went the distance, starting at No. 2 and outlasting 29 other men to win the Royal Rumble Match. With the win, Mysterio earned a championship match in the main event at WrestleMania 22. However, Rey has a choice to make; go for the World Heavyweight Championship on April 2, or cross over to RAW and go after the WWE Championship. Will Mysterio give any indication on his preference?

Also, after Kurt Angle defeated Mark Henry to retain the World Heavyweight Championship, Undertaker made his return. The Deadman made it clear that he is coming after Angle, causing the ring to collapse as the champion stood in bewilderment. Will Angle have anything to say about the supernatural occurrence?

Plus, RAW’s Gregory Helms surprised everyone by entering the Open Invitational Match at the Royal Rumble and winning the Cruiserweight Championship. With a RAW Superstar holding the gold, what will this mean for the cruiserweights on SmackDown?

Find out all this and more Friday night at 8/7 CT on UPN.

That's all well and good, but what's a guy who doesn't watch wrestling very often to do about his fantasy WWE team?

I need superstars to draft, people! I don't think I did poorly last week, all things considered, but I should be winning! Winning!

Winning!

Jeff's match with HHH was damned good as well.

In retrospect, the Jeff/Matt match was good. It wasn't what people were expecting, but it was good though.

-- There are rumblings backstage that Low Ki may be coming back. Nobody ever thought this would happen due to the backstage heat he had on him when he left the company.

Man I hope so. That fatass Samoan needs to be put in his place. Though he'll probably find a way to duck Ki in TNA as well. YOU CANT RUN FOR EVER JOE!

Does anyone know just WHAT the beef between LowKi and TNA is exactly? Did he no-show...did he pull an Orton and shit in someones bag?

He got double booked for TNA and a show in Japan(I think it was Zero 1) and chose Japan.

Thanks for reminded me about the GAF fantasy league. Totally forgot about it.

Ok, so he got double booked and went for the one that paid him the most money (probably, TNA was just starting out then). Hardly enough to "blackball" him for.

Hell, they keep going back to the well with Waltman and Hardy. Those guys have MULTIPLE no shows to their records.

Come on, you know there is a star system at work.

All I have to say is after the retardism that was giving the belt back to Cena, they better make the Triple H/Cena feud damn good.

TNA's a little backwards in their booking when it comes to big names, similar to how WCW would bring in formerly big names that no one gives a shit about anymore. Low Ki is a bigger star than both of them right now. Jeff Hardy might pull in the female audience, but X-Pac was never a draw even when he was in DX. He's pretty much the poster boy for bad heel heat.

I think TNA's doing a little better at it now though. They correctly treated Christian like their biggest signing ever when he joined, and Sting is a pretty good draw still in the same way Ric Flair's name still has value.

As for HHH/Cena, I think the WWE/HHH is trying to manually recreate the split crowd reaction from Rock/Hogan a few years ago. Even if Cena is booed out of the building at WM, they will go crazy for HHH, and that's all they care about.

An interesting look at things. To be honest, though, I'd like to see HHH drop the tough talk back a little and push the "student of the game"/"the game" part of his character. Show his performance in the Rumble, make him out to be the smartest motherfucker in the WWE, have a vignette of him watching "game film" of the WWE, learning and preparing.

Now that would be badass.

That WOULD be badass.... just have him backstage, watching old Cena tapes. Someone goes to interview him, he tells them to GTFO... he's studying. That would be awesome.

Notes on RAW...

The following matches have been confirmed for tonight’s edition of RAW:

Edge vs. John Cena for the WWE Heavyweight Title

The Big Show & Kane vs. Chris Masters & Carlito for the World Tag Team Titles

A long Triple H promo is expected. (:lol REALLY?)

Rob Van Dam will make his return to RAW on tonights show.

Some sources are speculating that AJ Pierzynski may be making an appearance on tonight’s edition of RAW. Apparently he’s been in discussions with WWE as of late. You may remember that he shot an angle with TNA several months ago.

AJ P is a baseball player...Didn't see his TNA work, but this smacks of a Kane squash.

I dont really see Triple H taking on that tape watching charcter as from what they are doing with Alex Shelly in TNA it would not quite suit him. Speaking of that gimmick I wish they would do more with Shelly in TNA as that gimmick is dieing as it has not been going anywhere in the last few months.

Have you ever said anything that was worth the time taken to read it?

now seriously, are there high school girls that not only watch wrestling , but then also buy merchandise??

i have never seen one girl when I was in JR high, High school, college or anywhere in on the street, bar, etc... wearing cena merchandise or WWE merchandise for that matter.

who are these mythical young girls buying cena stuff? is it just guys that are embarrased to say they are buying it and marking "15-19 female" on the survey attached to their order???

You underestimate rednecks.

Seriously though, Cena is the "bad boy rapper" and the "buff hunk" all in one. He sells. Girls buy posters and shirts, and the world is unsurprised.

Keyser Soze said:

Yes, but have you ignored HHH's ego?

He buried Edge by saying he wouldn't help anyone else, including the champ. The HHH character has evolved from the HHH/Austin era. HHH is just a guy who think's he above everyone, so seeing him watching tape of anyone but himself would be below him.
