And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
That Moonrise Kingdom trailer looks like a well-made parody of Wes Anderson movies. I think he's great, but there's a predictability that I was glad he stepped away from a bit with Darjeeling and it just seems like its coming back with a vengeance here.

Already saw The Intouchables and it's a great movie. Very touching, and like the synopsis said, at times very funny... Highly recommend it. Sleepless Night looks great, so I will watch that one. Will also watch God Bless America. Need to see more from Beyond the Black Rainbow. The premise seems interesting, but so far the movie seems like a snore fest. We'll see.

And last, but not least, The Avengers. Will watch it for the same reason I watch every single comic book movie... For the mindless entertainment.

The only things I wanna see this month are The Avengers, Moonrise Kingdom, and God Bless America. And in that order.
I can probably wait for God Bless America to come out on Netflix. It's Magnet/Magnolia, do it will definitely be on there.
I need to see The Avengers because, well, it's The Avengers movie. And Moonrise Kingdom because it is Wes Anderson. I'll see anything he does.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel wasn't good, although I understand it clearly isn't aimed at me. The audience only seemed to laugh at the racist jokes, which was worrying.

Beyond The Black Rainbow looks interesting, I hadn't heard of it until now.

Avoid Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Excited for Beyond the Black Rainbow, Moonrise Kingdom, and Sleepless Night but two of those probably won't be coming to cinemas here anytime soon :(

Loved God Bless America, dark comedies are hard to come by. The message isn't perfect, but nuggets like how the modern freak shows are exalted (reality shows and Youtube) and the death of real conversations hit home.

Well, I haven't even seen 10 films in 2012. What have I missed GAF?

Excluding festival stuff and the May films above, here's the best films so far that have been released:

Sound of My Voice
The Raid
This is Not a Film
The Deep Bue Sea
Headhunters
Damsels in Distress
The Cabin in the Woods
21 Jump Street
Kid with a Bike
Snowtown
Kill List
The Secret World of Arrietty
Haywire
Miss Bala

Beyond the Black Rainbow seems like a film set inside one of the twisted corporations/medical institutes David Cronenberg used as a backdrop in his early films. It also has a lot of his visual style from the 1980's as well, and that appeals to me greatly.

The month of May shall be glorious for me: Dark Shadows, Moonrise Kingdom, On The Road, Cosmopolis, Men In Black 3 and..................... motherfuc kin PROMETHEUS! I'm on the moon....'

Expandable may be hyping Sleepless Night a bit too much : competent flick, but pretty forgettable in the end. But yeah, Tomer Sisley's performance was pretty amazing. Can't say I'm surprised Hollywood jumped on remaking this already. IMO, Polisse should be in this month Top 10 instead, with Sleepless Night as a matinee.

Already watched God Bless America and Intouchables, both were great. Gonna see The Avengers tomorrow, so that leaves The Raid, Moonrise Kingdom, plus early releases of Cosmopolis and Prometheus left for me to see this month. I'll also probably end up seeing Piranha 3DD with friends, first one was the epitome of guilty pleasure.

Whats the good word with Dark Shadows? I had my doubts about the movie when I first heard about it but after watching the trailer, I thought it would be some decent fun.

Ah, so jealous. You also get Rust & Bone, right?

And you get Prometheus in May? Damn, that's awesome.

Forgettable? I saw it back in September and still remember lots of the awesome action bits. The storyline is fairly generic, but I thought it was quite well done. Certainly much better than our standard US action fare.

And where to you live that you get Piranha 3DD earlier? That just got an 82-minute runtime, ha! Perfect length.

I've heard it's decent and a good mix of actual violent horror and comedy. There's just something about the last few Depp/Burton combos that really have felt like a waste of time. I couldn't bring myself to put it on the top see list.

I live in Ireland, and Piranha 3DD opens next week here. Although I just saw Aja is not on board anymore, so I'm truly setting my expectations really low on this one.
As far as French thrillers go, I felt that Point Blank/A Bout Portant was an all-around better movie. But hey, glad Sleepless Night seems to be getting pretty rave reviews in the States, hopefully it will do decent. It is certainly way better than most US action flicks...though in all fairness, given the recent output on that end, that is probably not saying much.

?!?!

Point Blank isn't fit to massage Sleepless Night's feet. No contest.

Definitely see Sleepless Night, folks. It's sort of like a more down-to-earth Die Hard; realistic, fallible protagonist in an extreme scenario doing what he can to badass result.

Rust & Bones indeed but I don't give a rat's ass about french movies. Prometheus on May 30th, hopefully with a preview screening the day before, fingers crossed. Best month of the year!

No Cabin In The Woods however in my movie theater, fucking hell, guess I'll have to watch it by other means...... The BR better be out ASAP, they should have released the movie sooner damn it.

Avengers is amazing, have fun people!

Looking forward to the Dictator, God Bless America and Moonrise Kingdom. Although I have a gut feeling the Dictator is going to be really bad.

I've actually seen The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as it was released earlier in Australia and while it was better than what I expected I still wouldn't recommend it. All the characters with exception of Tom Wilkinson's are extremely formulaic and its view of India and the demographic it targets are neither new or insightful. It is ocassionaly funny though.

Has anybody read the Intouchables Variety review? Ugh.

Just thinking about an American remake makes me shiver.

That review is insanely off base. Offensive? This is not The Blind Side.

How is that even possible!? Is it a record for a non-english film?

From wiki:

On March 20, 2012 The Intouchables became the highest-grossing movie in another language than English with 281 million US$. It broke the previous record set by the Japanese film Spirited Away (274,9 million US$).[12]

The feel-good dramatic comedy has become a cultural phenomenon in France where it was voted cultural event of the year 2011 by 52% of the French.[3]

Try not to watch Beyond the Black Rainbow when you're tired. Stimulants recommended in either case. It's very slow and has a rhythmic pulsating soundtrack for almost the entire run time ;b

Beyond the Black Rainbow is amazing... If you're in the right mood.

Avengers gave me the biggest meh feeling after seeing it.

EDIT: EXPENDABLE! Is Moonrise Kingdom getting a limited run or wide release? I expect it is small right?

Very interested in Oslo, August 31st and Beyond the Black Rainbow.
Somewhat interested in Sleepless Night.

Nothing else.

Yeah, I don't know why people are going batshit over The Avengers.

Anyways, Moonrise Kingdom is limited release and will expand wide-ish by end of June.

It looks like the most banal, cliche-filled blockbuster in quite some time. My only hope is that Berg provides some exciting action, as he has the potential to make a good film but it just looks like he in complete Bay mode.

Saw God Bless America last night with a Q & A with Bobcat afterwards in Syracuse. Pretty cool since he's from here and he filmed several scenes here too. He is a really nice guy in person. Was a great time and I really liked the movie, but I still like World's Greatest Dad more.

Some of the points were spot the fuck on though. Felt great vicariously living through the main character.
