12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

Er....you guys critiquing the demo DO know that a whole whack of reporters were there and got to see them do this in person right?

There is a fair number of articles popping up now about this demo.....

How do you know the reporters weren't faked?

yeah, it's a joke

Any reason why the big snap feature wasn't shown in all of 12 minutes ?
They might still be working on displaying the games with a proper aspect ratio.

I dunno about this...on one hand it looks great, but it is just a waste of precious resources. 10% of GPU, 3 Gigs of ram, 2 CPU cores....

maybe if the box were more powerful.
Isn't the PS4 also 'wasting' relatively lots of ram on the OS?

in the sky italy forum (ill try to search the thread later) they said that at launch u will not have the tv guide but just the notifications (i really dont know what it mean) the guide will come down later.....like the sky go app

I'm not sure Sky will ever let MS do the things it wants to do (be fully integrated into the TV experience), an app like Sky Go is one thing, being fully usable with their own boxes and have their own tv guide overlay is another altogether and it's something that goes against everything Sky has built, espcially in the UK.

Pretty cool demo. Impressed by how quickly it can change between apps (too bad they're all behind a pay wall). I'd like to see the user experience for someone who isn't a XBL Gold member. I really want to know how well the voice commands work in a more hectic living room. Will voice commands still work if there is another conversation going on in the room? How easy is it to trick the voice recognition? Will the system recognize the face of someone wearing a hat? Or what happens if the user puts on a hat mid session, will that throw it off?

Just one person, really... You? Cause Snap ain't in it. But like I've said before, that's a Windows 8 signature so I expect that to be hashed out.

This looks slick and boss. It's obviously not faked, come on people.
This is the comprehensive look a lot of people wanted. Aces overall!

No, there can be nothing appealing or positive about this system. It will steal your wife, make your pet betray you, eat all of your food and kick you out of your house. Buyer beware!

The article says

"As for responsiveness, there were a few more loading screens and wait cursors than I expected, especially doing things like snapping apps and loading the One Guide. That "

I think if it would have crashed like people believe it is doing, then Nilay would have written about it.

Maybe it's not in the videos because we already know what it's supposed to do thanks to Windows 8. It's not an exciting feature in that sense. People are latching onto it because they want the rumors of it's bugginess to be true.

Yeah, I know it's getting positive feedback from those who saw it in action, but I really want to see a demo if it for myself.

I think there are plans for a separate video for that.

Nice, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear. Hope it's soon...

Looks awesome.

BUT WHY is everything metro except for achievement and recording notifications? I think the metro stuff looks great. But having some notifications metro square and others rounded looks strange to me.

There are multiple in-person demos being written about on news sites today, this is obviously not fake.

the verge write up is pretty good, giant bomb talks about how impressed they were in their 45 min xbox game demo, ign has their own walkthrough, etc.

I'm really happy about the overwhelmingly positive response to this, but for some peculiar reasons.

For the last couple of weeks, both journalists and other various pro-Microsoft entities would have had you believe that GAF was religiously anti-Microsoft to the extent that they would never get anything but negativity from here, and hence dismissed all complaints as biased whining.

Well, as demonstrated herein, that is not the case.
I don't have any anti-MS bias. However, recently, reality does.

If the hardware was on par between the two consoles this would be a game changer for me, I hate how boring the PS4 UI is. This video is excellent, really shows how good and snappy the UI/OS is.

For me, it's still the price. I can't bring myself to pay $500 for an inferior product. That said, once t hey drop it to $400, and months go by without any hardware hiccups, I would definitely consider getting an Xbox One next year. Would be great to replace my DVR box. But yeah, the OS looks gorgeous, and is totally awesome. Good job MS.

I like the stuff they show in both vids... verge and the official one.

I will say that I don't really watch TV. Netflix I do watch.

If I could say "Xbox, record that TV show" and DVR something, I would be REALLY INTERESTED!!! But that doesn't exist, right?

Why doesn't this exist...

legalities. There is no way a cable company would allow MS to replace their own DVR and it can open the door for piracy.

can you snap in Skype calls while playing a game or watching a movie?

Less, but it's not wasting gpu and cpu on it, or at absolute least they haven't really confirmed it but I doubt they're using anywhere near the 10% that X1 is.

Video looks nice. Look forward to trying this UI in a year or two when the X1 actually releases an exclusive I'm more than mildly interested in that I can't get on my 360 or pc...(Halo doesn't count, that ship has sailed with the
Master Chief surviving a nuke by being shielded by the ship he was on which exploded. Seriously, shoulda killed him off awhile ago
)

Yeah well just lock it to the box? I mean they have DRM right? So if say I could just record a TV show but never have it leave the box, I don't see what's wrong with that.

I think that there is this arbitrary limiting of the way people can use data that they receive to their homes, which feels smarmy. I know there are a shit-ton of legal issues that need to get sussed out, but as long as content providers continue to live in the past, I feel like they're neutering the entire industry and preventing any forward progress.

I never ever watch TV because I don't have a set schedule, but if I could find a show I want, say "Xbox, record Swamp Hunters", and come home to see it on my box, I would snap this up in an instant. Why isn't that TiVo functionality in everything already?

I appreciate your opinion but the DRM was just too much anticonsumer like SOPA, ACTA etc. There is a good reason why MS backed up on it. Leaving it in would do TREMENDOUS damage to the brand, console and sales of it.

You just gotta deal with it, mang. Maybe PS5/ Xbox3 will be always-online, online-only.

I think the idea to have the option to install physical games and be able to play them without the disc is a very good one.

The way they went about it was just terrible. It would have been much better if you had the option to install the games and while they were install you'd be subjected to the online verification. Of course you'd also have the option the uninstall the games at which point DRM is off and it works just like any other physical game. That's the sensible way to do it.

All the crap Microsoft received from GAF and other websites about the rumors might pay off when people start watching more of these videos. I'm so excited for these features, talking with family/friends while doing whatever is going to be great.

Charlieeee, shun the nonbelievers!

Wow... I'm impressed, the OS is so friggin SLICK.

I think its cool u can get messages and invites while watching TV.

Impressive, but kept waiting for them to show Snap. Guess they removed it for now.

How does the TV integration work? Does TIme Warner work with it?

Loved it. Looks so slick. Not going to use most of the features outside of maybe multitasking between my game and the web browser, but it all looks very snappy

Upload studio actually seems to have more options than what Sony has with Share

The Verge video missed about 3 voice commands. Was it accent related or fast talking error at work there?

I think one of the latest numbers was 3.0 - 3.5 GB RAM reserved for the OS, so that would be about the same as the XB1. And I assume they'll also need some of the gpu and cpu to handle the OS, or else it wouldn't work while playing a game. But I agree that it's probably not 10%

I gotta admit, it looks like they may deliver on the UI front. Even the Kinect seems to be working as intended (if only primarily through voice commands).

The PS4 has a secondary chip for handling various OS functions/features (I'm just not sure what all it covers).
