1990's Cartoon Survivor (Do-Over)

00's should definitely have Anime. It was a good part of Toonami and Adult Swim. I think the anime should be limited to what was played on US television though, although this isn't necessarily a US competition. Maybe that wouldn't work, but there has to be some way to filter the loads of anime from the 00's.

Cowboy Bebop was technically a 90's cartoon, even if most of us didn't see it until the 00's.

DBZ was mostly a 90's cartoon. It premiered in '89, but ran until '96.

Heh, the 90s sure had it easy. Only the absolute best stuff was ever even localized!

Though, we were certainly missing a few in this nomination process, i.e. Gundam Wing, Escaflowne, Digimon

2000s had less variety, but higher quality. i think bebop and avatar would top my list.

2000s:
futurama
king of the hill (dunno how it missed the 90s when batman beyond and spongebob are on it but okay)
family guy
american dad
venture bros.
avatar
boondocks
invader zim
cowboy bebop
trigun
fullmetal alchemist
paranoia agent
eureka seven
flcl
teen titans
samurai champloo
fosters home for imaginary friends
samurai jack

i think that's all i saw. i also watched blue gender but i am purposefully ignoring that. i suppose i ought to do the same to eureka seven.

justice league and a few others too. never watched justice league though.

ja feel. this would be significantly tougher for me to vote on. with the 90's it's just obvious - d lab shits on the competition.

too much greatness in the 00's

Did the tally.

The race for 2nd place is actually really close. I'll say this much: Reboot isn't going anywhere.

A little over a dozen shows got voted on. Some got saves for the sake of pronouncing their necessity and staying power, which kind of rocks, while there are a few shows starting to pop up that seem to be coming up fast for the next kill or two.

ReBoot is gonna go soon. just delaying the inevitable.

It almost did today, but a few people (myself included) did a 180 after seeing a lot of good defenses for it. It went from a sure kill to a really healthy save. Unless there are a lot of kills out of nowhere, that is.

it's got maybe 3 or 4 rounds left at best before you get to the shows people probably aren't willing to cut, i'd say.

I changed my second kill vote to johnny bravo so I vote for it to die twice.
He's all done, unless there's a big shake-up. TMNT was only ahead by a few votes, but a few people are changing TMNT kills to Bravo kills. Looks like he's a goner with Beast Wars
.

I think it's kind of interesting how a lot of people posting are trying to make sure we don't liter the top 10 with nothing but super hero shows, even if we a lot of us undeniably loved TMNT, Xmen, Spiderman, Superman, Freakazoid, Reboot, Beast Wars, etc as kids. I do think that cutting for diversity's sake is starting to be less and less a smart option, but it's a healthy sign!

Right now we're in the "I haven't seen this since I was a kid and I don't know if this was actually good, or just good to a small child" phase of the competition. We're going to be in the "I know this is excellent and you're monsters if you don't agree with me" phase very soon.

TMNT should be turned into soup tomorrow, but I have no idea what else. I'm looking at this list and I just don't know. Beavis? I've definitely seen some anti-beavis, but I don't know if there's a pro-beavis lobby out there.

kill: johnny bravo
kill: johnny bravo
save: beast wars

i dislike johnny bravo and tossing beast wars a save because poor beast wars

With that said, I hope some of the shows almost cut today are still nixed tomorrow. They'd be huge to get out of the way for later.
TMNT, Reboot.

As for Beavis and Butthead, I think you'll find some major Mike Judge fans in here. It wasn't as gross-out a show as some might think here, and even a "gross" one like this is still really, really funny to this day.

King of the Hill is my Mike Judge jam.

I'd try Reboot and TMNT again and see if Reboot sticks. It made it past Beast Wars to claim "Best CGI abortion" (if you don't count the fact that the story was actually cool) of the 90's, so it's got that going for it now.

the only actual thing of beavis and butthead i ever saw was frog baseball and i was 6 or 7 and it freaked me the fuck out. going only off that, i think the show sucks and will try to kill it even if it means saving south park.

but yeah, tmnt has to go. it may be time for reboot too. i think darkwing duck's gotta go soon as well. it's not really top 20 material.

Judge himself admits that the early stuff was terrible, but it got much, much better.

I'd watch Do America as a quick primer.

I'm finally nearing the point where both Darkwing Duck and Talespin can go for me. I loved the high flying adventures of Talespin though. I really feel an urge to vote Sponge Bob off so it can shine in it's rightful spot in a 00's thread.

I'm up for all of those. What do you think of TMNT, if it makes it through the night?

By now I'm ok with that. Though.... what are the selling points of Tiny Toons sticking around longer than TMNT? For me TMNT was more about the badass live action movie. Also never realized that guy from CSI: NY was Casey Jones.

Tiny Toons had those epic music video episodes, but I can't remember anything more than flashes of scenes (at their school I think) beyond that. It could be amazing or it could be garbage.

Edit: Watched a few clips. It's like a slightly less good version of the original Looney Tunes (which was amazing), but with all of the characters as children and updated jokes. For instance, in this clip I'm watching, Babs (the pink bunny) is doing a Barbara Walters impression complete with lisp. It's not the greatest thing I've ever seen, but the animation is what you'd expect from something carrying the Looney Tunes name.

Edit 2: I know I've mentioned this before but....don't watch a TMNT clip if you cherish your memories of it.

Edit 3: This is what I loved about Tiny Toons http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csTMOTtNoac

Skimming through a few episodes I found listening to their "commentary" through multiple music videos unbearable, the animation distasteful and the humor dull. It's my target for next round.

I realized something about two remaining Disney shows... they're Disney Batmans.

I'm not saying both should be dead by now or go next... but we should consider these things.

Haha this. There is a reason I haven't touched the TMNT show in a while. I remember loving how cool the brain guy in the muscle dudes stomach thing was.... then I wandered across an image of it on the internet... I don't want to make that mistake again. On the other hand, the live action movie is still great.

i didn't watch a single episode of gargoyles, but there's another show starring ducks left, so darkwing duck is the most redundant of the two.

I agree with the Darkwing duck one, but Gargoyles was an amazingly sociologically deep show. The persecution and references to KKK. It was very dark and pretty powerful. Same thing with X-Men, but X-Men also fought giant robots from/in the future.

I remember really liking Gargoyles, but it's one of those "I just don't remember why this was good" shows on the list. I really need to rewatch.

i had heard the first two seasons of gargoyles were really good and the third wasn't. i forgot the renaming to 'the goliath chronicles' and didn't know it was basically a different show at that point.

Didn't the Gargoyles also fight robots?

Indeed. It is closed.
And for the reference I dont get off telling the results.

not really.

I would never steal your thunder!

Here's a short synopsis of the gargoyle show.

In the Dark Ages, there was a race of heroic warrior monsters known as Gargoyles. These creatures existed as stone in the day, but become flesh and blood at night. One Scottish clan made an alliance with humans to help protect a castle by night if the humans would protect their stone forms by day. The uneasy alliance was shattered when human prejudice provoked a betrayal that allowed the castle to be sacked and most of the resident clan destroyed, leaving only six adult survivors and a rookery of unhatched eggs. A further misunderstanding during the clan's retaliation on the invaders and rescue of their hostages left the clan frozen in stone by a magic spell that would only be broken when the "castle rises above the clouds." For a thousand years, the castle laid abandoned and the clan condemned by this curse. In 1994, a wealthy multibillionare named David Xanatos bought the castle and transported the whole structure to Manhattan where he placed it on top of the Eyrie building which he owned. It is high enough to be above the clouds, thus the conditions of the spell were met and the Gargoyles were revived. Now, this clan must adjust to this new age and gain friends, like Detective Elisa Masa who reveals that Xanatos revived them to exploit them for his unscrupulous ends. This is coupled by the fact that another Gargoyle comrade, Demona, is alive from their age, and is now an insane renegade bent on the extermination of humanity. Rebelling against them, the clan abandon the castle and pledge to protect New York like they protected the castle in the past.

There exist a lot of mistrust between the species that culminates in a lot of acts of violence where members of the cast actually die off. At one point there is a KKK like kill squad that goes out looking for/hunting gargoyles and smashing their stone forms.

Was a great analogy for racial unrest that even children could pick up sociological values from. It really made you sympathize with characters and detest hate mongering.

That sounds good and all, but I remember it not being that fun as a kid, for me, to get into. I also think X-Men does very similar things while managing to be a little cooler overall, and it didn't feel as directly inspired (fiscally) by Batman
and TMNT
as Gargoyles seemed to.

It's moments like this where I must repeat: I don't hate this show or anything, but we're getting into that phase of cutting.

I watched episode 1 and it's coming back. The lead Gargoyle guy had a love story with the other blue Gargoyle girl and maybe a triangle with the human woman or something. It looks really well animated and I remember the story being good.

I have no idea if it would have save support or not.

i thought x-men was generally sloppy show. plus it was based on an existing property and didn't really do anything on its own. the dcau shows were so highly regarded, they influenced the comic books they were based on. harley quinn, braniac, and mr. freeze were all changed in the comics to reflect what was going on in television (harley quinn didn't exist before batman: the animated series). x-men was a collection of story arcs told in animated form.

even though i didn't see gargoyles, i'd rather see x-men gone.

I can totally understand that. It had quite a bit of substance but it was quite slow for a kids show. And you're right, most of these are good at this point and it comes to cutting. Hence why I'm looking for people that would plead Tiny Toon's and Darkwing Duck's case. At this point Duck Tales and TNMT as well.

I also understand that this is somewhat of a war zone and negotiations aren't necessarily open hahaha.

Might as well check while everyone else is:

Does anyone care about The Tick?

I'm looking at the superhero shows left and The Tick seems like the odd man out.

Agreed. I'm down with nixing Darkwing Duck before Gargoyles.

It's for the same reason I pulled my Reboot kill: some of you guys made some really good cases for that show and I trust people who watched it and went back more than my fuzzy memories.

The cartoon? Nah.

Yeah, the superhero shows are getting tough for me. Tick would barely be at the bottom for me. I'd reluctantly put Supes above that and not sure what to do about beyond and regular batman.

BTW what is the general consensus here on Batman Beyond? I absolutely adored that show, but I know that the sci-fi aspect wasn't for everyone.

I like Beyond, but I think out of the three big WB super hero shows we have left it was the weakest (only out of those three, though). Batman is definitely the best, but Superman had such a strong pedigree & plot arc. I still argue that the ending of that show is a model to follow in terms of series finales.

Batman Beyond is the weakest link of the DC shows, but it's still pretty damn strong.
