i forgot dexter's lab was still on there.

i can really appreciate genndy's sense of direction, but i hate his affinity for repetition. i hate it. his affinity for repetition is something i hate.

he's also a big fan of really quiet episodes to let animation talk for itself, which is good in theory, but he also will have segments repeat or go on way too long. it's why sym-bionic titan is my favorite show from him. it has those moments, but god it can also have characters interact with each other.

dexter's lab isn't a crummy show, but i don't think it's one i'd like sticking around too much longer. the powerpuff girls was probably the best cartoon network show of that era (sorry reboot and dbz).

I've already voiced my opinion of Spongebob, but I don't know how much support there is for killing it (even though it was a 90's show for all of six months or whatever).

I wouldn't mind The Tick, Tiny Tunes, or Spongebob. I enjoyed the hell out of South Park in the 90's, but that was probably because it was the edgiest thing on TV.

I'll probably double kill Spongebob and see what happens. If a defense force shows up, it shows up.

The only reason I haven't voted off South Park yet, is because I remember that South Park Bigger Longer Uncut was released in 1999. That movie was hilarious. It was the first time everyone saw Kenny without his hood, and that song What Would Brian Boitano Do played. The series was just starting to get good near the end of the 90's.

I might vote it off later, but I have to fry some bigger fish before it.

Anything on Ani's first list you want to axe?

Heroes in a Half Shell! Turtle Power!
Well, Round 21 was largely uneventful to be honest.
The two shows voted off today were:

tmnt_lg.jpg
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with 26 kills and 6 kills and
  • Beavis and Butthead with 27 kills and 9 saves.

No top five this round: Too many ties

Bottom 2:
  1. Courage with 3 kills and 4 saves
  2. Reboot with 4 kills and 9 saves

75 kills this round.

Your top 22:
  • Spongebob Squarepants (Seasons 1-4)
  • Rocko's Modern Life
  • Hey! Arnold
  • Rugrats
  • Doug (Nickelodeon Version)
  • Dexter's Laboratory
  • The Powerpuff Girls
  • Courage the Cowardly Dog
  • Animaniacs
  • Batman:The Animated Series
  • Darkwing Duck
  • DuckTales
  • X-Men:The Animated Series
  • Gargoyles
  • Tiny Toons
  • The Simpsons
  • South Park
  • The Tick
  • Superman The Animated Series
  • Batman Beyond
  • Reboot
  • DragonBall Z

Vote Away!

Kill: X-Men- I just don't think it holds up well. The opening is still a classic though. I also prefer Evolution to be honest
Kill: X-Men
Save: Reboot- Top ten show. Also lol Canti's post

Kill: Tiny Toons
Kill: Sponge Bob (great show but deserves to shine in a 00's thread... not here)
Save: Reboot (just in case, will change if need be)

Kill The Tick
Kill Courage the Cowardly Dog
Save X-Men

I think X-Men is a really iconic show, but I won't weep if it goes this round either. I'm grasping at what I want to kill next due to everything being at least ok in my book.

Top 22. Everything left should be good enough to be considered 90s classics, in my eyes.

Anything on Ani's first list you want to axe?

On the list:

X-Men - I haven't seen it. Yeah, I know it's wrong. The first X-men cartoon I watched was X-Men Evolution, which I loved. I especially liked how they changed Nightcrawler into a comedic relief, it made me like him a ton more (too bad he's not very funny in other X-Men media).

Batman Beyond - Out of all the Batman cartoons, I remember not liking this one the most. I didn't even know that was Batman when I first saw it as a kid. I can't make any comments on the show since I don't remember it well, but i'll give it a refresher before writing it off.

That's about it. I actually have more shows I dislike on the second list more then the first.

Man, maybe we should do an anonymous round... not today, but soon?

The diversity of kills send greater early on until votes change later on to ensure certain saves, etc.

I'd personally save X-men for later but I can understand this. The older X-men was targeted at both children and adults. It was so sociologically centered that my mom even watched it with me when I was a kid. The later Evolution was a pure kid's entertainment series. Still had the same values but simplified it a bit and made the character personalities a bit more vibrant.

Maybe next round. How do we do it though? I just post the list at the beginning of the round, you guys PM me, and post the results afterwards.
You guys wanna do it for top 20 to top 18? And maybe top 12 to top 10.
I'd rather not. The fun is in seeing the votes come in, talking about it, etc.
We should at least do it once. At least to see where everyone lies.

I'll post updates throughout the day.
Should be fun.

I'm just going to post my vote anyways... people can save their votes till the last second. The worry about talking changing the votes will go out the window by the last 10 because everyone will be saving only their favorites. The silent vote thing will just lead to back room discussion that has the same kill dynamics, just a bit more underhanded. I prefer to be open and honest with my decisions.

True, but maybe one round to get an "honest" vote with less politics?

I agree. The writing was pretty good, even if it wasn't Batman/Superman level, and I really felt like it got little kids to think a bit harder about things than the average action show.

The only risk is someone might pm other posters and start an alliance, thus defeating the point of an anonymous round... honor system?

What about a vote, after all of this, to decide the best opening theme from the 90s? Anonymous.

Also, heh, that Beavis and Butthead picture looks like fan art.

I should probably go back and watch Evolution some time.

Does anyone else hate Cyclops? Because I remember disliking Cyclops before I even read some of the comics. And the comics make me hate his character even more.

I don't want an anonymous round at all, honestly. Everyone can look at the thread and see how each kill was made up until this point, but an anonymous round would be this weird blank spot in that. If top 10-ish shows went because no one knew to save them...that would suck.

Updates throughout the day would give people voting later an unfair advantage. If you were going to do it (and, again, I'd really rather you didn't) 20 to 18 would be far more acceptable than 12 to 10. The 12 to 10 fight should be really interesting in the thread as people try to get their shows into that top 10 list, and having that be anonymous would be awful.

Alright then.
Would you be OK with a best theme round?
Non anonymous of course.
Should be fun to discuss.

He's under used in the movies and underdeveloped there, but I like him in the comics.

His commitment to the cause and the weight he carries is interesting, especially when compared to flakes like Gambit and Wolverine. Those guys are cool, but Cyclops had to be more dependable and accountable, which lead to solid drama on the show. He wasn't always right, either, which was interesting.

This is what worries me, I feel it would end up with more politics. I say this because I actually got a PM earlier from another poster that wanted me to join a covert operation to kill Ren and Stimpy earlier. With a silent vote I feel like more of this would happen and show's wouldn't get a chance to defend themselves. I feel like every show should get a chance to plead it's case before people kill it off.

What we could do is do a side vote where everyone puts the shows from the original list in order of preference. Then collate the data to see what would win in a straight up, not politics fight. This would be best at the end since by then all shows will have had ample time to plead their worth. Then we compare that list with what we did with this double kill thing to see how far it was off.

Any vote that doesn't impact the main competition is fine with me.

An anon round would make an alliance even more worthwhile since you could pick a show, get four or so people together, then kill it. The chances of saves being used on that show are slim (out of 20, with 40ish people participating, there are bound to be shows with no saves) so the chances of killing it would be high.

Huh. That's lame. I've done the alliance thing, but it was always open, comical, and done early in the round so people could contest it.

Does anyone else hate Cyclops? Because I remember disliking Cyclops before I even read some of the comics. And the comics make me hate his character even more.

I dislike Cyclops as well. He has a cool power and I even like his design, I just hate his character. I don't read the X-Men comics, but if you read threads, reactions, etc about him. It's usually always about some girl who's heart he broke or something else. I never hear anything else about him except all the relationships he's been in and out of, or who's he's cheating on next.

They should really make him cut off links with all the women of the X-Men, and just make him a leader and nothing else. If the past news about him shows anything, it's that Cyclops and relationships don't go together.

I might be wrong about some of this stuff, but I just dislike whenever his character is mentioned. It's never good.

OP I just realized that you've got Spongebob listed as "Spongebob Squarepants (Seasons 1-4)" when Spongebob only had half a season in the 90's.

He said with hopes that people will turn on Spongebob, since it was a 90's show for all of like six or seven months

Cyclops cheated on some of the other X-Men? I always remembered him as the goody two shoes of the group, in contrast to Wolverine.

Cheating on Jean Grey seems....unwise.

Kill: X-Men
Kill: X-men
Save: Hey! Arnold

I hope that the two shows that drop out this round are X-men and The Tick. I loved X-men when I was kid, but I can't stand that show anymore. I've tried to rewatch epsidoes recently, and I just can't get over the animation/character voices. The Tick was a great show, that I bearly ever watched. When I was younger I'd love to see it when it was on, but I never had a close afinity with the character.

If I could choose one show to win this it would be Hey! Arnold. When I was 6 Hey! Arnold started to air. I hated it; but for some reason I used to watch it every single week. As time went on I "got" the show, this is a rare kids show. It has a slow build up, Arnold is the main character, but this show is defined by the surrounding cast. Learning about Mr. Hyunh's daughter, or Grandpa Phil's time in the army is what made the show. I love how emotional this show can make me feel, it is a great piece of entertainment.

The best Cyclops ever was Age of Apocalypse Cyclops. He was a bad guy with brock samson hair. He blew off wolverines hand permanently while wolverine took one of his eyes. That has to be my favorite arc of all time.

Kill: spongebob squarepants
Kill: courage the cowardly dog

Spongebob was at the end of the 90s and just needs to go.

Courage was alright but his time has come for him to go.

Save: X-Men

Courage scared the hell out of me ;_;

That satan cat thing. That guy with the blonde hair.

Scared is probably the wrong word. It creeped me out.

Migh as well go after DragonBall Z. I liked the original show, it had sense of whimsy and adventure.

DragonBall Z was just fight after another and they were always the same. Lots of training for the fight, that usually amounts to nothing, since the bad guy hasn't shown his true power yet, and in a pinch the good guys tap into their secret inner powers. boring.

Kill: DragonBall Z

Yeah, I always felt kind of the same way.

Oh no you don't.

Oh no you don't.

I second this sentiment; Nuh uh.

I sprinted home from the bus for years to catch DBZ. I imported PS1 games at ridiculous cost, bought absurd Hawaiian shirts, and so many action figures.

It also has better animation than almost anything left on this list, and is the best pure action show. No one in America had ever seen anything like it when it premiered, which is probably why it was a huge phenomenon.

I mostly agree... but why Arnold? Such a great show....

I also agree with this.

I think he cheats on her at least three times with other X-Men and with a lot of random people who don't matter. Plus in the one of the more recent events (huge spoilers)
he becomes as far from a goody two shoes as possible and totally kills Xavier and becomes Dark Phoenix
.

You just described every shounen anime ever (I don't think DBZ should kick the bucket just yet though).

Kill: The Tick
Kill: X-Men

Save: Courage the Cowardly Dog

Come on!!! The fact that Courage was so weird and dark was the whole appeal of it. The fact he was this small dog who had to save his nit wit owners every episode was awesome.

It had some amazing music and the dark/creepy atmosphere was great. If you re-watch any episode of it you'll still feel uncomfortable. Everything had an omniscient and oppressive vibe from the art style down to the buildings and characters. Yet still this dumb pink dog almost always manages to win.

Although I probably liked it a bunch since I'm kind of a misanthrope myself.

Kill: The Tick - It was a good show, but I think it's its time to go. Most of the remaining shows are just better
Kill: Courage the Cowardly Dog - Same reasons, good show, just it's time.

Save: Reboot - This show is top 10 for me, so I'll keep saving it.

I would like to vote out south park, but it doesn't seem like many others want to go that way yet
