It's been a busy day for PSP hackers, as a great deal of progress has been made in deciphering the groups of servers the handheld uses as it connects to the outside world. Among the discoveries posted on one random Geocities site that will probably be down by the time you click on it: an "update image" (about 14.5mb zipped) found on a site named dj02.psp.update.playstation.org.

This update image, as it turns out, is a PSP executable and boots up as a "game" if you transfer it over the PSP via memory stick. This update has a full install procedure and everything, although the EULA attached makes mention of the PS2 hard drive and the update itself crashes the PSP's internal software. Most interesting, though, are the new features this update promises in the install program:

# Voice text reading
# SonicStage music/news transfer (SonicStage being an iTunes-type program from Sony)
# Calculator
# Voice chat
# Three PSP internal games
# PSP mail software
# PSP word processor/spreadsheet software
# PSP web browser
# PSP scheduling software

If this stuff actually makes it, goodbye DS. Although who knows, we didnt get all that crap we were promised on PS2
 
Also didn't Kutaragi say that Sony was also going to release software that would let you watch television wirelessly on your PSP on the road? That's supposed to come out in the first half of 2005.

I'm also kind curious when they'll bring out the GPS functionality for the PSP.
 
Well most of that stuff I think we'd assume was coming like a web browser and voice chat.

I think the television functionality on the PSP is going to be the coolest upgrade though. I'll be able to watch HBO or CNN or ESPN anywhere I want on my PSP assuming I have my router at home hooked up properly and I'm in a WiFi hot spot.
 
How is the word processor soft gonna work without a keyboard? Same with the web browser, although it's no big deal since URLs are just a few characters. I guess most of the stuff will eventually come to the PSP, but this particular story sounds fishy to me.

It's not what you think, with this update 'crackers' can analyze how the psp downloads data/information from a unique web address.
 
WTF? Mail, spreadsheet, scheduler and word processor for a device without a keyboard (yet)?

Doesn't make any sense to put up an image like this on a *production* server for a package that isn't ready for official distribution yet.

Well i am assuming they will give seperate software or download to memory stick if they do but it sounds very odd.

They should provide all of these :p
 
Maybe they'll release a small key pad for the PSP or have voice recoginition for typing.

Although for all those people who say touchscreen is pointless, a touchscreen actually probably makes more sense for a product like the PSP if you're going to have all these PDA type functions.

That's why I think touchscreen will be standard in future handhelds.

If Microsoft ever directly makes a handheld machine, I think it would definitely have touchscreen. I can see future iterations of the Apple i-Pod (maybe when it gets more advanced with video/personal planner functionality) also having touchscreen.
 
Jesus, the PSP sceners can't really be that far along already, right?

This is an official Sony release?

Either way, such functionality = crotch-assailingly cool. :o

I'm begining to think it's a leak of a beta build that wasn't ready for mass distrobution, seeing how the update file has been pulled from it's original address.

EDIT: Hackers are having a field day with this.

One thing I think you will see happen is a central Sony Network for PS3 and PSP together along with their own electronic products.

That's gonna be really cool.
 
God damnit, if the PSP had a touchscreen it would officially be The Best Thing Ever.

As it is it still sounds pretty damn cool, though.

They displayed one at E3 2004, that connected to the USB port. It just seems odd that these kind of apps would already be sitting on a production server while Sony has yet to confirm one way or another about ANY peripherals.

Nothing wrong with touchscreen, but you should pay attention to the PDA scene where a proliferation of built-in and add-on keyboards over the years is an indicator that touchscreen by itself is not considered adequate for data-intensive apps. A decent-sized/spaced thumb keyboard on a PDA still gets me faster input even after using Graffitti and other character recognition techniques for years with PDAs.
 
Hmm...something smells kinda fishy here. I'd love to see this firmware turn out to be real, but just seems too good to be true at this point.
 
Sony did have a keyboard for psp displayed at TGS I think. Anyon have a pic of what I'm talking about, its was clear.

PSP Keypad will probably be out whenever they upgrade the firmware to take advantage of this functionality.

I'm hoping PSP TV will also be out before next summer like Kutaragi says.

The only thing about the PSP that really pisses me off is the price of Memory Sticks. Now I know this isn't Kutaragi's division, but damn, I wish these things were cheaper. The thought of spending almost as much or more on a Memory Stick as a brand new piece of hardware is ridiculous.

If Sony sticks to marketing it as a game machine, PDAs, cell phones, and even Blackberries won't be going anywhere. Convergence devices still don't do nearly as well as stand-alone gadgets.

Cell phones are winning the battle. They have too many advantages.

That's usually because convergence devices at this level cost 500 dollars.
 
The ps2dev.org crew are probably right in supposing this is just dummy data for testing transport across the network of servers in question.

That is also what I was thinking when I read it, now I can buy a PSP as a cheap PDA for email, web browsing, a little scheduling and with wireless LAN. That's too good to be true.

I now have a reason to buy a PSP since I don't play games on the go.

That keyboard ain't gonna be free. Also, cell phones - at the very least - have the ability to grab a connection anyhwere that happens to have cell towers nearby. And these days that's just about, well, anywhere. The PSP will need a WiFi hotspot, and free ones are rare. Sure, maybe you've got some wireless stuff going in your home, but that doesn't really break the tie with your cell phone, does it?

I wish I could find the article, because it was one of the most profound observations in a long time. That the last convergence device to ever succeed, to become completely ubiquitous, was the clock radio.

Camera phones may get there, but I see - ever so slowly - dedicated cameras simply becoming able to communicate with cell phones via Bluetooth. Corporations, afraid for their secrets, will never let too many people own camera phones. Regardless of that, whichever company marries a cell phone and something else, and creates something super-practical, that will be the next big thing. Treo's coming awfully close, but you sacrifice size for function with those things.

This is true.

Because of the hardware/software model, Sony can sell the PSP for under cost, and this puts it in a price range that puts many other devices to shame.

Plus that screen ... good gawd. I may be able to download content onto my cell phone, but that doesn't mean I want to play Gran Turismo or watch a movie on my cell phone.

Really? That keyboard is going to cost so much that it'll make up the gap of 300 dollars required for the PSP to go from 200 dollars to 500? Man, I didn't know those things would be so expensive!

Do you honestly think Sony won't have a stellar solution? At worst they'll just require a yearly fee much like a cellphone. This yearly fee will cover most of the big problems with this sort of thing and will allow people to connect much more easily via WiFi. Not to mention people all over the world have already connected online via PSP, so it's not near as difficult as you're making it out to seem.

Again, price has ALWAYS been the hinderance of convergance technology. However, your observation fails when PS2, a form of convergance technology, has succeeded. Or when Xbox, another form of convergance technology, has succeeded.

But even if you limit this to handheld products, which is perfectly acceptable, 200 dollar convergance hardware is extremely attractive, not to mention Sony is first and foremost marketing this as a gaming device.

We'll see, of course, but I'll register my disagreement at the highest possible level. Which isn't really that high, except that I think you're wrong.
 
hopefully, all this stuff should come pre-loaded on US/EU launch PSPs.

edit: practically every new cellphone out there has a camera. As they start to creep into the multi-megapixel range, they're eating up the low-end digital camera market.
 
Hopefully future firmware updates will increase the rate at which the PSP renders images in Photo Viewer. It's not slow by any means, but there's a 2-4 second wait while the system re-renders the image (becoming clearer as time moves on) if you zoom.
