What kind of backpack/bags do those with sportbikes use? I have a small magnetic fuel tank bag, but it is nowhere near large enough to carry say a change of clothes around, or even a towel. How do backpacks hold up for riding? I'd be worried it would fall off of one of my arms and distract me while riding.

Kriega. Kriega is incredible. Or if you're like me and like making kids happy, buy the Yoda backpack. :)

Anyone have any recommendations as to where I should be looking for my first bike? I've looked on craigslist, and some of the bikes are damn expensive. Really hoping to spend anything from 1000 to 2000.

Craigslist is one of your best bets. Do you have any local motorcycle forums too?

Just googling motorcycle forums in Phoenix would work?

I want something that's not a cruiser, but craigslist is full of overpriced ones =/

Not too sure on that...cause over here in Houston, we have a forum called MotoHouston and also Houston-Imports that both has only locals selling bikes/cars. Dunno if Phoenix has some sort of equivalent to that.

Best bet for a beginner bike is a Ninja 250, you might be able to find one a little out of your price range, probably around 2500? Then sell it when you're done, save up a bit more money and buy something bigger. You usually can sell for close to what you get it to, or take a loss, but usually it won't be a huge loss.

Layed down my bike tonight, first time I have. Slowed down to turn around, slowed too much and turned too sharp. All the weight got on one side and i couldnt hold it, so I slowly layed it down and rolled out so it didnt lay on me...

At least it happened that way. The one time I dropped a bike was my last one. I was leaving work the way I normally do by coasting down a tiny grass hill. I didn't factor in I had ridden on an unusually warm winter day and that lots of snow/ice melt had occurred. Inches of mud and that bitch just slid out from under me, and all my coworkers saw. Fuck em. Don't be embarrassed. Virtually every rider has had something simple like that happen.

^

Simple falls feel embarrassing, but just be happy it wasn't worse. When I first started riding, I went riding with a group of people and we went to the gas station to fill up before we left. Well, when I pulled up next to a pump, I decided to lose my footing and just fell over to the side. We all had a good laugh about it, don't let the little things get to you.

I'm waiting for my new to me Suzuki Burgman 650 executive K4 to be delivered. Anyone here with a Burgman? Opinions? Will post mine as soon as I get it.

So today was my first ride up to the north shore of Oahu from where I live. Had a good time going up, tried some more advanced stuff (for me) and had a coffee with a friend of mine. Now a bunch of guys roll up and park next to us I notice. One of them comes up and introduces himself, and hands us his card for the club that he is creating. We ride out with them and I am left waaaaay behind, which is fine with me really as my skills are not up to the task yet. One of them lets me know that i should take a class (which I sadly have, guess i will improve with more learning). Anyway, the question is, do people here prefer riding in a club/ group vs. Alone? I prefer alone or with my friend who is willing to ride at nominal speeds, specially after today.

I prefer alone. Too easy to get in over your head when group riding unless you have a really good checkpoint-based system where everyone meets back up at certain points. Too many idiots try to be Rossi on group rides and people get pushed out of their comfort zone to try and keep up.

Always alone, that way I ride at my own pace and don't have to worry about other peoples braking points around me / trying to pass me in stupid places. You did the right thing and didn't try to ride outside your comfort zone.

I don't do group rides for the most part (sizable groups at least). I really only ride with people I've ridden with one on one, so maybe up to three total in a group, but usually just me and another rider whose style and pace I know and can keep well.

Yea it was certainly tough at first....

Either way I am moving to north Carolina in a few months and I hear it is much nicer over there riders in general, vs here in Hawaii. (less pop density and all that.). I want to get more seat time too, but the random rain where I live makes it hard to predict a good time to take it out.

Also, I did end up buying the schuberth c3 and it is a really great helmet. Quite quiet as well.

If you're in NC you'll have to be sure to make the pilgrimage to Deal's Gap/Tail of the Dragon. Plus lots of nice mountain roads in the area in general from what I'm told.

Yea, I am looking forward to those rides actually. :)

Is it possible to tune down hp or cc on your bike? I know In UK they do it depending on your permit and some bikes got buttons for it but how is it done?
Reason I'm asking is because I'm getting good deal on this bike and if trade happens I'll be proud owner of http://s1184.photobucket.com/albums/z336/andrija77/YAMAHA R1/

Now, my past exp is on 125cc sport bike and 660 enduro, big jump and I'd rather restrict it to like 600 for a month or two until I get the feel for it.

There are restrictor kits sold here in the uk that will limit certain bikes to 33bhp but I'm not sure about how they do it.

You could look into a longer travel throttle body maybe? I used to use a few different ones on MX bikes that could change the throttle response from on/off to a very long turn but again I'm not certain if they do them for road bikes

Electrician guy I asked was like wtf, because everyone wants to tune stuff up and I want it down :D

Friend drove me home on his b king, man I felt like i was going to die when he accelerated. Not sure if it's not being on a bike for a while or being on the back but it was crazy :|

Easiest way to do it is mechanically restrict the throttle body from opening 100% a lot of "beginner" bikes are sold like this, with the full throttle travel easy enough to restore by the dealer or rider.

Possible to re-map it to kill HP but this is usually done by running the bike lean, not very good for the pistons. This is assuming it is EFI and not carbed. Carbed bike you can just turn a screw, but again - not that great for it.

Most bikes that have a low power or "city" switch do so by retarding the timing - you could do this again with EFI programing but if you don't know what you are doing it can be bad for the motor.

Also possible to physically restrict the intake (less air in = less fuel by EFI system = less power) depending on computer though this may make bike run rich and foul spark plugs (not as huge a deal as running lean but not great for the motor)

Well this past weekend I just did my 1st oil change on my 07 R6. Took me about an hour 40 minutes. Didn't help I didn't have an impact gun to get the oil bolt out. It was more involved than I thought it would be. Took off all the plastic off of one side with the shifter and other stuff. Ended up trying rotella t after some research. Feels good working your own bike.

The good part is how much quicker you get after the first time or two :)

and so here we go, its getting shipped to the mainland. :(

Need to vent.

So I put an ad on local forums that I'm trading or selling one car I have for motorcycle and this guy contacts me next day, we talked etc, I sent someone over to check it and finally went to see it myself, this was all in 5 day range. Then on Sunday when we met we talked and agreed we'll see each other on Wednesday when I call him to finish the deal, he'll bring bike and I'll give him car(had some things to finish before that). All was good.
Come Wednesday morning, I wake up early and everything is set, I'm happy and calling the guy to set final meeting time so we can do this thing and he just says, "yeah I sold it". I asked "really?" in disbelief and ok after that.
This fucker fooled me around for over a week, I took down the ad, started planning what shit to buy and got over excited and just then pulls this shit.
And worst thing is, he lied about price, he was selling it for 5k and says someone offered him 6500 lol. Then later on he goes he didn't actually sell it, he's meeting guy later, he'll call. Doubt he really sold it, probably changed his mind or just wanted to fuck with someone...

So yeah, just wasted my time and gas for going there on some motherfucking retard. Gotta put the ad back up, find someone else or sell it and find decent bike, gonna take a while.

meh

P.S. One thing he didn't count on is I'm vengeful person, and this won't be the end of it.
P.P.S Silver lining might be that I can find 600cc bike and avoid terrorizing myself with 1000cc, but then again I already found same bike with less mileage from friend of a friend for less money heh

@ godofcookery : Bolded as this is so important.

Ride in your own comfort zone!

Personally I prefer alone, or with one friend whom I trust. Actually organising a five day trip with him at the moment.

Other friends I don't trust, so I follow them, as I perceive them as a liability/risk to me.

Wouldn't trust someone I don't know / hadn't ridden with before.

Don't trust some friends as I've had them do stupid things, like one try and undertake me on a corner at high speed, screw his line up, and nearly collide with me... less then an inch... otherwise we would have both been wrecked.

Most important thing is ride how you feel comfortable. Bugger what anyone else thinks. Most bad things happen as someone is trying to keep up with someone with better experince / skill / bike.

What? Shitty person, but don't go and do something stupid.

What bikes have you owned thus far out of curiosity?

Oh I'll be careful, it will take months, years even, but he's gonna get what he deserves, nothing serious or stupid but just enough to satisfy me, but enough of that :)

Beside billion scooters when I was young I bought 125cc sportbike(replica of honda) just to learn the basics, countersteering, gears etc. After that I had yamaha xt660r and was looking to go to 600cc sport bike but this offer came, but now I'll go back to 600cc hunting.

Really depends on the type of riding you want to do. 600s are great for the track, but honestly middleweights blow on the street. Liters have all that missing torque. Speaking of track, I'm getting ready to finish the prep work on my R1 so I can do a few track days during what's left of this season. Checklist is -

- Remove front wheel, get my new Q2 put on - done!
- Flush coolant system, put in Engine Ice that I bought - coming up next
- Install fork protectors - bleh...emailed R&G...seems they forgot to mention something...possibly about drilling a spot in a blocked section of the axle. F THAT...would want a pro job.
- All the usual track prep BS - working on it

Should be going August 21.

update 8/9 - Bike is about as clean as it's going to get, including chain etc. Should have all tools needed now to remove front wheel so I can get that tire changed. Remaining tools/supplies en route for safety wiring (decided to do this even though it's not required...I'll need it some day and any track org appreciates it). Once here and ready I will change the oil/filter, wire up drain plug and filter (with hose clamp) and oil filler cap most likely. Then draining the coolant and flushing the system. Tire change is to be done somewhere in here, and while the front axle is off I'll put the fork protectors on. Oh, and I'm registered for the track day now.

update 8/14 - Got the drain bolt drilled for safety wiring yesterday and actually completely my first safety wire! Exciting to me at least. Funny thing was the hole used for the drain bolt to be anchored to was already a really small drilled hole close to it in a sturdy piece of metal. There is no reason for it to be there. Pretty sure Yamaha deliberately drilled that just for safety wiring :) ... also have the oil changed now and running well. Going to try and get my hose clamp onto the filter now that the filter is installed (could not tighten it with the clamp on there). I already know a good nearby anchor point, so no biggie if I can get the clamp on/tightened. I removed the little bit of extra bodywork so I can flush the coolant. That is the next step. Going to get some distilled water and then top it off with Engine Ice. Then the final fluids change will be my brake fluid. I have all this week to be working on this, so should be nice and simple. Going to keep cleaning up things (now that bodywork is off) just to get it super nice and neat.

8/15 - Flushed and changed my coolant today. Good god. I did the hose clamp/hose removal method. I did leave the radiator cap on for I was told it would slow down the drainage, but it still pretty much just shot out all at once.

9SnYql.jpg

8/16 - Brake fluid changed to fresh, mostly clear fluid. God the fluid in both reservoirs was nasty. Had to get proper sized hose to connect to bleed nipple from Home Depot. Regular bleeder kit didn't work. Also got some of my supplies at an auto parts store today. The guy who ran a small (one man for the most part) tuning shop was working there as manager. He had previously tuned Hayabusas and ZX-14s for high speed runs etc, and was an avid rider himself (former cop). Not long after he left the force he started his own shop, and his wife helped with scheduling etc at the shop. It was going well. He kept doing the racing etc in addition to the shop, even getting sponsors for the racing. He did my Power Commander install/tune, as well as installed my Ohlins TTX shock and cartridge kit. He cared a lot about his work, and that often meant for him he was the only one who wound up working on the bikes, because he wanted to be the one who left that finishing touch on each machine. He did not have time to ride street anymore because the shop basically consumed him and his free time. Eventually, he ran out of money/time. He had to close shop up last year, and pretty much has worked "regular" jobs ever since. I recognized him today because I heard his voice in the store, and had a little chat with him. He felt motorcycles consumed so much of his time/money with not enough return, and he has not touched a bike since (for pleasure or profit). Made me feel a bit sad, to be honest.

Bike is finished. Got the trailer rented today (for use tomorrow). Loaded it up, tied it down, have all my shit in order. Just have to wake up at like 5 AM (ffffffffuuuuu). I'm pretty damn excited. Should be dry in the morning, maybe some rain in the afternoon, but it's scattered if so. When I visited the track a couple weeks back it was scattered thunderstorms but the track ran dry virtually all day (including after one shower that only stopped the track for maybe 10-15 mins).

Looking good man.

I just got back from another trackday on Saturday and DAMN, it was hot. It was in triple digits all day.

Had some early day track fiasco's too. Early round robin had an old cafe racer honda explode his oil filter all over the track. Lots of people almost crashed, but luckily no one actually did. Had to wait for about an hour for clean up and then while we were on the track it was still drying out for a little awhile.

Someone had to get a life flight later in the day. Tried too hard to pass someone and ended up slipping into the gravel and high siding. Ambulance was there before they called in for a life flight. From what I hear though, he's fine now and recovering.

Other than that it was smooth sailing. Hope to go the next one on the day before my bday! Ever since I first set foot on the track, I just can't get enough now!

Yeah, I hope my next track day is a bit more smooth...

Despite my two track schools they felt I should go into beginner group since I was new to that particular track. Fair enough. The only problem is after maybe three laps almost everyone still felt slow and I just wanted to be going faster. The video below is from my last dry session, complete with knee dragging (which I did manage to begin doing my first session out!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqSr0EvfsPk

6073137036_529170dd56_z.jpg

Sadly the session was delayed because of an I group rider crashing his Blade. Then a lap or two into ours a guy caught his rear brake lever of his Monster in a turn and lowsided. More delay. We finally got out there and that's what the above video is from. After that video ends it started to rain. So we went in for a while. The rain stopped eventually, track dried some, but still wet. A/I group went out, then B group was allowed to go. I should have stayed in the fucking paddock.

It took so little to completely break traction there. I could almost swear the pavement changes and I just didn't notice it. But, I know the inputs that caused it...so, I guess lessons learned. Nothing bad happened to me. Just sore.

Man thats a sad picture :( on the plus side it doesnt look too much more than cosmetic damage? Are the engine casings and rear sets okay?

Edit: just noticed the dent in the tank :(
