very, very solid. the only one that's had problems this year is shingo, our closer. but he's still 6/7 in saves. he just happens to have an ERA of about 8 :lol

our entire bullpen's ERA is right around 3 though. i think even a bit under. Also, Hermanson has yet to allow a run in 8 innings of relief work so far this year. our only shaky spot is that closer position, which hopefully Shingo has worked out....

Dmitri Young is officially one of the 7 dumbest people in sports.

"Why don't they talk about how hard the man works? Why is it that, 'Oh, he gets older, he is supposed to get flabby.' I look at him like Jesus Christ. I'm talking Barry Bonds. As great as he is, he gets persecuted more and more and more. It's not fair. It's like a witch hunt, and it's really uncalled for."

4-6 weeks out for Jaret Wrong. Fuck you Steinbrenner. Somewhere, Lieber and Hernandez are laughing at this shit with their sub 3 ERAs smoking some fine Cohibas that Duque snuck in.

That Toronto firing has me stumped. They hit a bad few games, but are they really hitting the ball that terribly?

Then again, I wish we had a GM with balls like that who'd fire Mel "Game Passed Me By 10 Years Ago" Stottlemeyer every time a starter reached an ERA around 9 after 4 starts.

CHICAGO -- Kerry Wood said his shoulder felt better Monday, and the Chicago Cubs hope the right-hander will be able to make his next start.

Wood left Sunday's start early with tendinitis but still got his first win of the season in the Cubs' 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"Kerry is feeling pretty good," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "He said he is feeling real good."

You know what that means....Dusty is gonna put him out there for 120 pitches. See ya in 3 months, Woody.

Blizzard of Ozzie

John Donovan, SI.com

Bobby Cox would just as soon have Leo Mazzone surgically removed from his side than badmouth a player -- his or anyone else's -- in public. And a player would have to be a thief, or an unrepentant criminal of some sort, for Joe Torre to leave him hanging.

So what in the [bleeping] world is Ozzie Guillen thinking?

Managers simply don't do what Guillen is doing. Good managers sure don't. Good managers, such as Cox and Torre and so many others, don't drag their guys through the swamps of public opinion. It's just not done. It's bad form.

But there was Guillen, the White Sox skipper, a week after an off-the-warmup smackdown of slugger Frank Thomas, ripping into former White Sox star Magglio Ordonez, who now plays for the Tigers.

And Guillen wasn't just ripping into Ordonez. He was ripping him.

"He's a piece of [bleep]," Guillen told reporters late last week. "He's another Venezuelan [bleep]. [Bleep] him. He thinks he's got an enemy? No, he's got a big one. He knows I can [bleep] him over in a lot of different ways. He better shut the [bleep] up and just play for the Detroit Tigers."

Now, that's some [bleep], there.

The public spat began when Ordonez accused Guillen of adversely affecting his contract negotiations with the White Sox last winter. But at this point it's not a matter of "who started it?" These kind of tirades open up a whole can of nastiness, and it's not just between Guillen and Ordonez -- who, by the way, are both from Venezuela -- or Guillen and Thomas. This is now between Guillen and every player who ever has played for him, and any player who may suit up for him any time soon.

Who can play for a guy who would ridicule you in front of the media and fans? What highly paid gazillionaire modern athlete can do his best when he's worried about what his manager might be saying behind his back? This is what got Larry Bowa into deep [bleep] in Philadelphia. This is what eats away at a manager's credibility, no matter how good an on-field wizard he might be.

When the injured and rehabilitating Thomas showed up in Chicago earlier this month, Guillen let him have it.

"It is good to have him here, because now he can see a winning attitude, because he was part of the bad attitude," Guillen said last Sunday. "Frank was a big part of the bad attitude."

Yes, Guillen's candor may seem refreshing. On some levels, it is. Getting the real, unvarnished, for-the-record story out of most managers is only slightly easier than pulling a "Good to see you!" out of Barry Bonds.

But to be an effective manager at anything -- especially in the ego-driven world of professional baseball -- you have to protect your people. You have to stroke them more often than scald them. And, if necessary, you have to water down the truth once in a while when talking to others about them.

The shame of all this is that it comes as the Sox are off to their best 19-game start (15-4) in the 100-plus years of their history. The spotlight should be on Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, Orlando Hernandez, Joe Crede and Scott Podsednik. It shouldn't be on a loose-lipped manager and two players who, at least right now, have little to do with this team.

Guillen has fueled this feud, though, and now the Sox and everyone around them have to deal with it.

"I'm fine with that," general manager Ken Williams told the Chicago Tribune. "We knew what Ozzie was about when we hired him."

Said Guillen: "If they want me to tone it down, I'll get another job."

If Guillen keeps this [bleep] up, eventually he may not have a choice.

As one poster said, the ChiSox must really fly under the radar as it's the first "national" article I've seen about this latest feud. Had something like this happened with the Cubs, it would be all over the place. In this particular case though, it might be a good thing.

we're going for our 8th in a row right now....15-4, best in the majors. but nothing on shows like PTI and Around the Horn.

Yet last week when the Dodgers were rolling, they were on both shows numerous times throughout the week. whatever.

the ChiSox got plenty of airtime last week when their manager publically threatened to rape Magglio Ordonez.

David Wright sure was shaky in the 9th,wow. Quite surprising since the guy is usually pretty steady over there. Looper got the job done though, good to see the Mets pull it out.

Pedro tomorrow baby.:)

:lol :lol :lol @ the cubs

yeah, they won(the reds fucking blow. awful pitching, awful d), but their new closer chad fox not only gave up a 3 run blast in the 9th, but he also got hurt :lol

pitching duel in oakland....0-0 in the fifth, 4 total hits.

goddamn. already in the 7th. still 0-0. zito and garland are untouchable

oh holy shit Zito just got fucking SCREWED by an ump. now he gives the HR. :lol :lol :lol

I would be so fucking pissed. 2-0 sox

What did the ump do? I'm following the game via MLB.com so I can't exactly tell what happens on each play. >_<

he threw a PERFECT curve for a strike....woulda struck Widger out. Only, the ump called it a ball. Even our announcers are like "wow, what was wrong with that? good pitch, didn't get the call."

i'll take it though. 4-0 us now

Garland with a complete game 4 hit shutout. 16-4, 6-0 on this road trip, 8th in a row, etc.
He's up to 4-0 with an ERA under 2.

Best starting staff in the majors? you better believe it.

D-Backs over Dodgers, score. I knew Vazquez would come around, he's pitched well all year and it's finally paying off in his last two starts. Oh and Lyon rocks. 1.5 back and closing.

haha yeah, probably. but going by just the numbers i believe we moved into #1 after tonight.

either way, doesn't matter. i'm happy.

Em, I can't believe you didn't have Big John in our CBS league.

It's Jon. No 'h' =p

And I was actually looking at him today, I really didn't want to take a chance and drop anyone else I had(although now that I look at it I shoulda dropped Hermanson, goddamnit).

Then again, had I known he was gonna pitch like this today(especially when he normally gets shelled in Oakland), I certainly woulda added him. :lol

god, not counting today, the white sox are 9-27 in oakland in the last few years. crimony.

It's Jon Garland, but the nickname itself is "Big John." Kind of like Alex Rodriguez and "Kid Wonderful." Then again what do I give a shit as long as he gets me some wins! I own that biatch now and he better perform god damn it (actually I had him on another team prior to today as well).

if he starts pitching like shit it's ENTIRELY your fault, asshole.

Well I've had Buehrle on four teams since the start of the season and he seems to be doing fine, so I wouldn't worry too much. Though, in all honesty, how long can Garland keep this up I don't know. And pitching in that park is bound to catch up to some of these guys at some point in the season. Great work so far though.

Sigh...Muthafuckin Dodgers! Well i guess it's still the same streaky ass Dodgers from last season. Our offense was doing so well too, cant blame the pitching tonight. Lowe kept us in the game but our offense failed us miserably again.

Power Rankings: White Sox simply dominant

If your opponent does not score, you can't lose. The Chicago White Sox apparently have this truism down pat just months after deciding to reshape Ozzie Guillen's power-laden club around the pitching-and-defense formula.

How much longer can Ozzie Guillen's club stay atop the AL Central? (Getty Images)
Missing are the thunder sticks of Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee, Jose Valentin (30 homers in 2004) and Frank Thomas -- a quartet that helped the White Sox lead the majors in homers last season. They were then replaced in the lineup this offseason by Jermaine Dye, Scott Podsednik, Tadahito Iguchi and Carl Everett, essentially.

Not exactly a sure-fire way to turn an 83-win ballclub into one of baseball's beasts.

But it is the age-old adage -- pitching wins -- that is carrying the White Sox through an eight-game winning streak, the best record in baseball at 16-4 and the No. 1 spot in the latest CBS SportsLine.com Power Rankings.

Even their No. 5 starter, Jon Garland, is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Yes, that is their No. 5, a sure sign the restructuring is going as smoothly as a Mark Buehrle delivery.

Buehrle (3-1 with a 2.67 ERA and a .170 batting-average against), of course, is the workhorse ace, leading a pitching staff that boasts the second-best ERA in baseball at 2.97 to the still inhuman Marlins league-leading 2.27 mark.

Fantasy Baseball
This week's Power Players
The White Sox have led in every game they have played this season, so only an inconsistent pen is keeping them from being unbeaten right now perhaps. The starters have the best ERA in the AL by far, and they lead all of baseball with 13 quality starts in 20 games.

Cuban-Yankee imports Orlando Hernandez and Jose Contreras are making hay in the middle of the rotation, leaving the big-budget Yankees (No. 15 in the rankings) awfully jealous of the mileage the White Sox are getting out the relative bargains compared to the $100 million rotation of Kevin Brown, Jaret Wright and company.

Defensively, only the equally surprising D-Backs (up to No. 10) have more assists right now -- which means a whole lot of weak ground-ball outs being sucked up by an underrated infield of Joe Crede, Juan Uribe, Iguchi and Paul Konerko, the impending free agent who is also carrying the power torch.

The White Sox are holding opponents to a .220 batting average right now because of the pitching and improved defense, and are the best in baseball in one-run games, going 9-1 in those close contests through their first 20 games. The nine one-run wins are just one off the April record, held by the 1987 Giants, who were 10-0.

Guillen and company have mastered the close-to-the-vest play, but time will tell if it will finally catch up to them once the weather and bats heat up in Chicago.

:)

Holy shit stop the presses! A-Rod delivered a big swing with 2 on and 2 out! I had to run to the PC to post this very useless message to celebrate this very momentous occassion.

There were 2 outs!

...and Giambi can't catch up to the ball!

In other news, it took 4 games but it looks like Pedro's finally broken - giving the fucking people of Boston yet another thing to celebrate.

Bases loaded, now it's time to start. Dot my i's like that cuz I got so much heart.

Yankee fans, Red Sox fans, girl fans around the MLB, all agree, that I'm the Casanova M-V-P. Take a quick break from the philandering to murder a few pitchers like I was on a killin' spree.

Bitches try to tag me out, they get shown, why I sit so high on my throne. Hold that glove out and you'll get slapped, like we're shootin' dice and you just crapped.

Haters like to draw me carryin' a purse, but they won't be laughing when I come through in the clutch to start a brand new curse.

Making the girls cry like a card from Hallmark, they call me the Don Juan of the ballpark.

Can't throw me out, 'cuz I got the spin, don't have to shout, 'cuz I'm here to win.

LOL, he hasn't fucked it all way (yet) but Kolb dishes out back to back doubles to give up another run. Who is the worst closer (not by injury, but actual name closers) in baseball right now? Kolb is bad, but I think if I was a Reds fan I'd fear Graves a lot more.

Looper is an average closer... Hawkins isn't a closer anymore I guess so he doesn't count.

You'd better not be talking about Astro and myself. He put a lot of energy into that picture, and he has him on about 25 fantasy teams...and I made it my avatar last night, because it's just so ridiculous. Look what it's done. If you are talking about us, you should thank us for bringing upon this massacre. If you aren't, well then, carry on.

:lol :lol :lol :lol @ the cubs pitching today.

also, :lol :lol :lol @ Chad Fox on the DL.

but the cubs did have Tyson Chandler sing the 7th inning stretch. Now THAT is awesome.

....and the chi sox break harden's scoreless streak in the first inning :)

Yeah, it's about time Sir Alex had a proper nickname. Any true fan would realize that something as generic as "A-Rod" is not benefitting the hustly and youthful vigor he brings to the ballpark every day as well as some of the absolutely sublime plays he makes, "Kid Wonderful" captures the whole package.
