2005 was a great year for gaming.

I went to WAGs boutique and all I got was a sniff
I know that Im posting this slightly late, but Ive not had much time to use GAF lately.

the gaming industry is becoming very impressive now. Every year there is a constant supply of good quality games and 2005 was no exception. Over the last year there have been many great titles that i have invested a lot of time into.

the highlight of the year came quite late for me, but it was without a doubt Shadow of the Colossus. I was very weary of this game at first because it seemed that all the people that liked Ico like this. Im going to upset many people here but I thought that ico was shit. there was one good plot twist, infact it was a very good and moving plot twist, but other than that the game just felt very average. When I began playing SotC I thought it was going to be sort of the same thing, but I was very wrong. The last game that impressed me as much as SotC was metal Gear Solid 3. This game had everything in it. Amazing graphics, superb animation and a very original yet fantastic gameplay. It was really a gamr that made me get up on my feet because of exitement and panic.

Another great highlight was Splinter cell: Chaos Theory. I had played the previous Splinter cell games and found them alright, but I just felt that everything moved to slowly, not just the pace of the game but the camera was slow and sam moved very slowly too. They corrected that in Splinter cell 3 and for me it drastically improved the game. Splinter cells greatest merits was its realism, from shadows to equipment to the story, it felt a little like 24 but in a game, the only problem was the slow camera, if they could just change that then splinter cell could become one of the greatest games this gen. That was fixed in the Splinter cell 3 and for me it was not just one of the best games of this year but this generation too.

Im not too sure if Digital Devil Saga 1 came out this year, but i know that 2 did. I actually pleyd both of them this generation. i had no games in the summer and I thought that I might try and be a little adventurous when buying a game. im usually very picky when it comes to rpg's, usually I just stick with Final fantasy, but DDS looked interesting and I decided to pick it up. It was certainly a great buy. DDS1 was stunning. Graphics and music were excellent and the story was genius. It was good to see the game have a very opriginal story and one full of surprises. DDS2 was just as good as the original, keeping up the high standards that the first one set.

I feel that 2005 could have been much better if I decided to buy Resident Evil 4. I still have not played that yet, but I hope to do so as soon as I do my exam next week.

There were plenty of other games this year that were great, but those are the ones that really stick out when I think of 2005.

So GAF, what games really stood out for you in 2005 and do you think that 2006 can produce the same quality of games that we saw last year?

It was excellent, much better than 2004 personally. Kinda sad to see the GBA, Xbox, and GC die off though. Those were my favorite systems.

2005 was another excellent year in the greatest generation in gaming history. Or perhaps it's tied with the 16 bit era, but I'd give this gen the nod. Those who think otherwise are generally confused and/or riddled with nostalgia. I've been an active gamer during every gaming generation. This was the best one hands down.

edit: Well, the original 77-84 generation can't be topped for excitement and new ideas both at home and in the arcades, but for quality this gen takes it.

I cant really agree with you there. Metal Gear Solid 3 alone made 2004 better than 2005. Im one of the biggest MGS fans you could find. If MGS3: Subsistance was released in 2005 then it would have been the best year in gaming by a long shot.

Ignoring sequels, film tie-ins, and remakes, what amazing bounty did 2005 give us?

Even my three favorite games of this year - Mario Kart DS, Civilization 4, and Guitar Hero are more or less retreads of well explored territory.

And the majority of games have always been retreads of archetypes. So are most movies. So is most music. So is most... everything.

There's a difference between working on an established archetype and making what is essentially a direct sequel. Besides, I never said there was anything outright wrong with these games - I mean, I bought and continue to play them. I just don't go around parading this year as the penultimate symbol of what gaming can be when it was really just sort of 'meh.'

and 2006 is a great time to pick up 2005's leftovers. :D
True. There are no great videogames coming out in the first few months of 2006, so I'll be finishing off prince of persia: the two thrones, buy Resident evil 4 and finish DMC, which I have had for ages but just never got round to finishing. that should keep me busy until MGS3: Subsistence, Final fantasy XII and Kingdom hearts 2

i share the same opinion. most games i played lately are complete garbage (nfs:mw, jak x, matrix, la rush) - sure, there are a few cool ones like genji, gran tusimo 4 and the bards tale, but overall, it was one of the worst years in gaming.

I forgot to mention Pro Evolution Soccer 5. This is by far the best soccer game every made. Those who have played it will agree....If you dont you should die!

Maybe it's the best year ever if you're a strat buff - think Makai Kingdom, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Suikoden Tactics, Advance Wars DS. And there were a few really tremendous games that suited my tastes to a tee, like Killer7, Psychonauts, We <3 Katamari, and Dragon Quest VIII. But for the most part, I've been waddling around in the 2002-2004 realm.

Unfortunately I dont own a PSP or DS and have only played on a PSP a couple of times at a friends house so I cant say how good the games have been for the handhelds, but i must say that i was impressed with what I played of MGA. Its probably due to the fact that Im an MGS freak. I thought it was good that they made a completely different game for the PSP. The new gameplay was done really well and it was good to see something different.

Wow, that's a bold statement. 2004, in my opinion of course, was the greatest gaming year we've had since 2001 (which had been the greatest since 1998). The sheer number of AAA titles that were released in 2004 was mindblowing.

2005 was pretty decent, though, especially for me as I had an entirely different selection of games available to me during the last few months of the year in Japan. 2004, though, was just too damn good...

And Psychonauts. And God of War. And Indigo Prophecy.

And that's without getting into some really quirky games for the DS.
I never played anyt of those games, but Shadow of the Colossus was enough to make this year fantastic.

Started out great with RE4, then nothing until SoC and X360.

Overall it was alright, mainly down to X360 otherwise id say pretty bad.

2004 > 2005 though. MGS3, Halo2 and GTA SA all released during the same time. Awesome year

2004 was probably the best year of gaming since the (legendary) 1998. It had a lot of huge franchises right around the same time of each other. 2005 was a good year with plenty of smaller, lesser known titles to fill the gap. 2006 will be more like 2004 was (Final Fantasy XII, Kingdom Hearts II, The Legend of Zelda:TP, MGS3S, etc).

Games i bought in 2005

RE4
God of War
Jade Empire
Indigo Prophecy
Conker Live and Reloaded
Burnout Revenge
Wipeout Pure
Tony Hawks Under Ground 2
Strangers Wrath
Shadow of the Collosus

I guess it was good overall, the bolded games are the ones i REALLY enjoyed (AAA)

Actually 2005 was really pretty good... much better than I thought it would be.

Resident Evil 4 (GC), and Ryu ga gotoku (PS2) really spiced up my jaded gamer in me.
