Other countries pay their athletes to join the Olympics.. So really all this do for free stuff is silly
Do they? I honestly don't know.
But look at the dream team. Every interview i read from one of those guys about Barcelona is that it was a great time, and it never sounds like "work".
I mean really you get a free trip to London, free tickets to all these different events, free food lodging, all this other free crap. And you want money off jersey sales? They should put that money into the special olympics or some charity.
It's not like your representing Dwyane Wade in the olympics. Your representing your nation. And if you want to get paid for that, there's plenty of people who would be more than happy to take your place. Insurance, fine i can see you don't want to get screwed over.
But come on. Also Prototype 2 johnny cash commercial? What the hell?
I dont' have a problem with Olympians being compensated. The Olympics is big business, why not give some of that money to those responsible for bringing it in? If people want to get all outraged and pretend that the Olympics are all about the purity and sanctity of the sport, then lets start sending the amateurs and college players and don't' cry when Spain kicks our ass again.
I'm not gonna blame them for wanting to get away from basketball after it's consumed their life for basically 3/4 of the year

Guys like Bird, Magic, Jordan, etc. were getting like 1/10th the NBA pay that all these other chumps who've been playing in the Olympics this past decade are getting. I don't remember ever hearing them asking for any sort of compensation for being given the opportunity to represent their country in arguably the world's greatest event. Just playing in whatever country is hosting that particular year already boosts their image and gives them publicity to bring in more non-salary profit. Players just rather chill over the summer nowadays.
And they get to retire before they're 40 most of the time.
Oh, the horror.
Millsap for 3 at the end of 3.
Everyone talks about how people don't want Memphis in the playoffs, i'm pretty sure Memphis wouldn't want Utah.
Even still that's just a bit nasty, no matter if someone asked or not. It's not enough to represent you want to get paid as well. Hell that's basically a free vacation. They don't pay for the flights, lodging, or meal right?
yes they do..
And yeah, the hours of practice, interviews and promo shoots are hours and hours of work..
Nike getting paid...why not Wade or whoever?

Does Nike get jersey sales? I would assume that money goes to USA basketball.
And really how many hours of practice are we talking about here?

This argument of them earning a big pay check and therefore should bite the proverbial bullet is funny. There's this saying that companies are not people, but they sure as heck are treated better.
How many people would ply their trade for free? Would a plumber? Would a carpenter? I don't know why we'd expect people who's skill is a sport to feel any differently. Yeah, it's one thing to do charity events, but plenty of players play in charity games and fundraisers. The Olympics is NOT charity. Everyone else makes money off of it EXCEPT the athletes. It's like the NCAA.
Wait, how are the Wizards losing to the Cavs without Irving and Andy V? Have they gotten worse?
come on Utah. Take down the Grizz!
NBA TV needs to show this ending...

Like I said, that's closer to charity work. The Olympics are not charity. They are a competitive sporting event. If we want to preserve the sanctity of the event, then don't send these PROFESSIONALS and send the college kids again.
"How many people would ply their trade for free?"poor Nike needs NBA players to do charity work for them..
Worst example ever
they can say "no." It's totally up to them. No one forces them to do shit.

If you want to be paid, then go sit at home. Don't accept then whine.
durant scores 30 so does YNB but with 7 more shots. sigh.

Westbrook has the green light.
Well if you count the two years before the actually Olympics...
And yes, Team USA jerseys are getting NIKE money.. You really think NIKE is doing it for free? lol

"How many people would ply their trade for free?"
Was referring to that.
Call me old school but they already get all this free stuff and have a chance to represent their country and win a gold medal. Who cares about the money? Your enshrined in history brah.
Never speak your mind? That is David Sternism at its best
Of course they can, my problem is that most people are trying to villianize them just for asking. I don't see anything wrong with Olympic athletes asking to be paid.
I assumed Nike was getting a cut. How is USA basketball not getting a portion of that?
I can see how you guys have a point but I'm not buying this "it's a business they should split up the money". Athletes also get great exposure to the world in the olympics and that itself fuels sales for their own jerseys and worth.
In a perfect world that money should be put back into the olympic programs and not go straight to nike if that is the case.

That is their trade.. People are making hundreds of millions of dollars off of Team USA hoops and they are giving it away for free.
No cared nearly as much when it was kids paying.. Once it became pros hoops became a cash cow for the Olympics.. So yeah plying their trade for free while others are profiting from it
Let the players get a little check.. I doubt players would say anything if they got a little money for the time they put into trying to get gold
What profit? The US Olympic Committee (or whatever the official name is) is non-profit. It cannot make millions of dollars off them. All that money goes back into the program to fund everything, including the players meals, flights, hotels, etc.
All medal winners get money. $25k for the gold.
NIKE, Coke, and whoever else is making gear for the Olympics is 100% making money

So? They are third parties. They pay for the license so the USOC can fund their shit.
Guess what, players don't get any of the Arena naming rights money in the NBA, either. And a whole host of other shit.
If the USOC has to pay these players, they have to pay everyone, and they'd be taking money away from somewhere. Let's cut the special olympics so the crybaby millionaire nba players can make some extra cash.
