Magic very easily could have faded into the shadows and not fought it publicly like he did. That takes courage.

He didn't know what kind of reaction he would get when he announced it.

I don't think it was that big of a thing. There were no risks, he had a great support system, he was doing what he loved...

I remember watching that All-Star game in '92 when I was eleven. It's still hands down the best All-Star game I've ever watched because it was bigger than just the game. So there was the larger picture, but the game itself had a fairytale ending as well with Magic playing extremely well and draining 3s at the end. It was exactly what was needed to help turn the perception of HIV at the time. No other All-Star game has come close to being as meaningful.

If ESPN 67 had dIEHARD playing video games on TV everyday talking about your disease and all that then what you said would have made sense.. But I forgive your hating ways because you are a Stockton fan

Yes.

At the time, people were convinced it was a terminal disease, and that it was limited to the GLBT community, and it was something people generally hid and were ashamed of. It wasn't really known what the short or long term consequences of playing at the professional-level of an athletic competition would do to Magic, and htere was backlash from many fans and players concerned about contracting the disease

It changed the perception of HIV/AIDS, especially since it was right on the heels of Freddy Mercury announcing he had the disease the day before he died. Though Freddy never chose to take it upon himself to improve perceptions of the disease as

Playing video games isn't the same as playing a high exertion game like basketball after an initial diagnosis of of HIV.

No one knew for sure if that kind of activity would have adverse effects on him going forward and maybe accelerate the virus.

So much this. In many ways, it might have been the most important game in any sport played in the last 20 years (in the US).

His goal was to raise awareness and do what he loved by playing basketball, having the spotlight on him accomplished both of those things.

If i thought i was dieing i wouldn't give a fuck if a spotlight was on me, i would want to do what i loved, like someone said, "courageous " is a too strong of word.
