Summary:

* Dempsey's goal was pretty. (So was Ghana's.)
* Our midfield, and in particular Bradley, were dreadful. It's extremely disappointing because for the past two years they've looked quite good.
* Our defense, who I expected to be dreadful, were surprisingly decent.
* Howard was excellent as expected.
* We weren't the better team, but we did finish our chances. Cry more mesousa.
* A few Ghanaian players committed some terrible fouls. I was proud that we were good sports, bus-parking notwithstanding.
* Ghana's kits were really cool.
* Ghana's coach looked sharp in that suit.
* USA! USA! USA!

Agree with all of this.
The silver lining (besides the 3 points haha) is that Bradley hasn't played this poorly since he was 19 years and starting for the US, so it can only get better.

Or you can choose to look at it glass half full and say that we literally couldn't play any worse, our best midfielder had the worst game of his international career, our most important player in the final third got hurt and missed the last 75 minutes of the game, and we still came out of the match with 3 points.

yup, silver lining.

Orlando City's hosted watch party.

Wish I could have made it. But no hope working in Lakeland and getting out at 5 of getting over to downtown Orlando. Orlando City is going to take over.

lol @ hate towards MLS. maybe if some of england's own crossed the pond and competed here their national team wouldn't be last in their group right now!

Defoe went over and is banging them in, not even good enough for England, complete joke of a league.

So I'm a complete and utter novice when it comes to soccer football (as well as pretty much every other sport on the planet). But the hype surrounding the WC has peaked my interest, so I though that I'd use today as a test of sorts to see if I could get into it. So here's an analysis of today's games from me; an American who doesn't particularly care for sports and hasn't sat down to watch a game of soccer football since...ever?

Germany vs. Portugal- I was rooting for Germany in this one, mostly because (between the two) I'm more invested in them since I took four years of German in high school and like Germany as a country. I know absolutely nothing about Portugal or its team, other than apparently that Pepe guy has a history of being an asshole? Either way, that was a fun game to watch. That headbutt was ridiculous.

Iran vs. Nigeria - Well, this was a snooze-fest. That random camera shot of the blonde girl in the audience was easily the highlight. I wasn't rooting for one team over the other so I was ready for either to win, but the game kind of went nowhere.

US vs. Ghana - Obviously I was rooting for my home team, and was glad to see them pull out the win near the end. I was amazed at how much time Ghana had control of the ball and yet kept missing the goal by a country-mile. It was kind of sad to see their players who clearly knew what they were doing continuously blow it. From what I could tell, the US got pretty damn lucky at multiple points during the game. Overall it was very enjoyable to watch though.

I have to say though, the highlight throughout the day was reading this thread while watching the matches. The commentary being provided by all of you made the games much easier to watch (pointing out which players were typically shitty/awesome/etc and what were good/bad calls by the refs). This whole day has been a pretty good learning experience as far as understanding the rules of the game too (as well as how the World Cup works). By the time the US/Ghana match began I found myself actually explaining some of the rules of football to my girlfriend, rules that I had only learned earlier in the day :lol

I'm definitely hooked, looking forward to watching the games tomorrow.

Dempsey and Bradley running back to the MLS than try and play in competitive leagues.

From Roma to Toronto, complete lack of ambition.

Well, if it were me and I could play for a mid table EPL club or in Bradley's case a Serie A club for decent money and be a fish out of water off the pitch in Italy versus potentially take an MLS team to the top, be in my element and get paid like a champ? I'm going for option two.

There's no shame playing for the Stoke's and Sunderland's of the world, but neither were going to realize their dream of Champions League football with them. They could've waited around and played part time til someone else came calling maybe, yes, but when MLS backs up the truck to your door why say no?

Doesn't seem to have affected them any, despite the fact that today was the absolute worst I've ever seen Bradley play for the first 75-80 minutes. Ghana was impressed with Clint, I'll bet.

Should have taken from Brentford player Bradley Wright-Phillips too,I mean he is topping the MLS scoring charts.

They would intentionally let them win to ensure Portugal doesn't advance.

They wouldn't see Portugal until the end of the tournament, and they've proven that they can easily beat them anyway, so they'd rather have Portugal go through and have a go at teams that might do better versus Germany.

Either way, they're not going to intentionally lose points. At best they'll field their B-team, which is still really good.
Is that supposed to be a revelation? Do you want credit for saying that?
???

It was relevant to the point I was making, don't take it so personally.

I didn't get to watch the game but it was pure torture just looking at score updates. By all accounts we played poorly and still got the win. That's what matters in the end.

Don't watch too much soccer outside of the Red Bulls (lol), but that was a great game. Seriously was not expecting the US to score that 2nd time.

Ghana was the better team and would've won if not for their horrid overhead passes.

But US attacked excellently those couple times but soon as they were ahead, didn't maintain the ball well and just stood back and defended. Great comeback though. Their play completely shifted after that equalizer.

I don't think I've ever seen Bradley play so poorly. That play near the end where he didn't send it to the corner is just suspect. Bradley, you're suspect!
