No, not the iPhone 7 coming out this fall, but the following year in 2017 could see the return of the G.O.A.T. design, but what is more impressive is this will see Apple getting out of the predictable "#-S-#-S-#-S" release pattern.

Sucks for those who go iPhone 7 this fall though, seems that model would be better referred to as "iPhone 6SS" if these rumours turn out to be true, and this source is usually accurate.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo at KGI Securities has today issued a new note in which he says that Apple will entirely revamp its iPhone lineup come 2017. According to Kuo, Apple in 2017 will release a new iPhone with glass casing and an AMOLED display. This somewhat contradicts an earlier note from the analyst that said Apple was aiming for an AMOLED iPhone by 2018.

More specifically, Kuo believes that Apple will decide between glass, plastic, and ceramic casing for its 2017 iPhone, but that the company will ultimately settle on glass, much like the iPhone 4, “as plastic doesn’t offer thin and light form factor designs, and it would be not easy to precisely control the tolerance of ceramic.”

Additionally, Kuo reports that Apple’s 2017 iPhone will adopt a curved display with curved glass body. Again building on the iPhone 4 design, the device will feature a glass front and back with metal sides. Kuo also says the phone will feature a “completely new form factor design” with more narrow bezels and a “more comfortably grip.”

As rumored in the past, KGI also believes that Apple will introduce a new 5.8-inch iPhone in 2017 with an AMOLED display. Despite the larger display, however, the device will feature a form factor that is ultimately smaller than the current 5.5-inch iPhone. If Apple is able to produce enough of the 5.8-inch AMOLED displays, the larger device will entirely replace the 5.5-inch model, meaning that Apple will offer 4.7-inch and 5.8-inch iPhones in 2017.

Furthermore, Apple’s 2017 iPhone will include wireless charging according to the report, though specifics remain unclear. An earlier report claimed that Apple was working a long-range wireless charging technology, though today’s KGI note makes no mention of that. Additionally, the device will feature additional biometric recognitions, perhaps facial recognition or eye recognition.

More and more it’s looking as if Apple will entirely revamp its iPhone lineup in 2017, while the iPhone introduced later this year will be largely similar to the current model, though thinner and without a headphone port. What do you think of Apple saving its big iPhone refresh for 2017? Let us know in the comments.

Well, AMOLEDs are cheaper than LCDs for phones now, so that means the components are cheap enough for Apple to keep their ridiculous margins on cheap hardware at Lamborghini prices.

Except the CPU though, that thing is a beast.

I've seen so many cracked iPhone 4's in work, this isn't something to repeat.

Most people didn't realize the iPhone 4 back could be replaced officially by Apple for less then $30, people just left them cracked because they didn't know any better. And if the iPhone 6 screen is a testament to anything, it is proof that they have gotten better at making scratch-resistant and strong phones that utilize glass. Further, if you believe the rumours about Sapphire, you know Apple has tremendous options to make something super strong and ultimately, fixable under a reasonable budget.

Okay dis hard

It's in two years right? So I'll be able to upgrade if I use my contract on the SE rn?

2017 is an S cycle release year. Am I missing something or is this the SE update?

The whole story is that are getting rid of that cycle and they are releasing a completely new phone in 2017 that is not an S upgrade with the same chassis as this year's release.

It sounds a lot like the Galaxy S7 Edge in description. Glass body, AMOLED Display, and wireless charging alongside an easier to hold form-factor with smaller bezels.

I was planning on holding off upgrading my 6 until next year anyway, so I guess I'll just wait and see.

So, for the iPhone 7, we have...no headphone jack, A10 SoC...and that's it?

Seems like we know more at this point for the 7s and future iPhones beyond 2016 than we do for the 7.

iPhone 7 is pretty much known at this point:

- Same body style as 6, in-form
- No headphone jack
- Headphone adapter via Lightning port
- Thinner
- Redesigned antenna bands
- Upgraded processor
- Dual lens Camera on Plus model that stick out, flush improved camera on smaller size

That's...incredibly far away if they stick with their current release schedule.

Happy to hear it, but it sounds like this years iteration will be disappointingly incremental.

Wow, just read the article, this is as ridiculous as Micheal Pachter prediction on the gaming side.

The thread title is pretty innacurate OP. Should read "Analyst predicts Apple will chose Glass over plastic".

Leaks actually somewhat support this. The leaks of the 2016 iPhone case show it's almost exactly the same size as the current 6S, just with a new camera setup and no headphone jack.

Pretty disappointing if true though. Apple is really gonna let Samsung and other OEMs gain interest if they do yet another middling upgrade this year.

How accurate are these rumors? I know Apple is a leaky ship with leaks being all too accurate.

Then again this doesn't mention the sound cable at all. I think I'll just get a 6S later on.

I'm not against a bigger screen per se but I don't like the form factors that come with them. Samsung seems to have made strides in this regard and if Apple can make their bigger iPhones feel like the 5-inch iPhones, I may upgrade to one of them.

Man a ton of people are going to be pissed if they're on the two year numbered cycle and the phone this year is kinda crap and the "S" is the GOAT.

I get one every year so doesn't bother me but still it's a pattern for a reason.

I thought the 7 would be the one to have the 4-like design change.

Oh well, I will carry on rocking my 4S for another year. I loved the 4 too much to accept the downgraded designs which followed.

I just got the 6s+ a week ago. So yeah I don't think I'll be upgrading to the 7. If the tumors are true I'll wait till 2017. Wireless charging will be amazing to have. I have also heard the next iPhone will have a pro model similar to the iPad. I would be all over that.

What about the SE?

Glass front and back, or something equivalent, or no sale.

Absolutely hate the antenna panels/bands, the designs since the 4 have been compromised. Also the change to 16:9 screens makes the iPhone look off to me, too tall. They need to do something about the bezels to balance it out.

iPhone 4 is still the best design.

AMOLED is great. Many phones with them tend to be set to crazy saturation levels for some reason, but it doesn't have to be that way. Dem black levels, too.

Yeah, they've pretty much gotten to the level where they're at least just as good as the best LCDs out there and much better in most areas

interested to see how the new lCDs in the G5 and the "Super LCD 5" in the HTC 10 perform
