2017 PC Screenshot Thread

^Thought I would try something new.

Thanks Otis for your wise words and level head.

My intentionally inflammatory post was designed to show someone who was advocating personal attack, how it felt when we ourselves suffer it.

I usually keep my comments respectful on here.

I was expecting some knee jerk reactions from those who have not been involved in the ongoing battle on this thread. Sorry guys.

Not sure if its a form of autism (unconscious) or simply narcissism (conscious).
No one called anyone autistic. Was simply posing a theoretical question.

It went from cute to full on mental breakdown in here. Yikes.
This is the type of throw away snide comment I have issue with.

This is exactly the type of pernicious use of provoking language that is, imo, at the root of the problem here.

There was no "full on mental breakdown" from me. I was demonstrating to someone advocating personal attack, how it actually felt to be attacked.

Those of us who recall Jims recent “full on mental breakdown in here.” may garner insights into the renewed recent spate of negative comments.

I think this comment From Jim answers the question, as to whether the behaviour is conscious or unconscious. It is clearly conscious and narcissistic.

Sometimes one must bait a trap to catch the monster. (Yes I have been playing too much Witcher :)

For me, there has been a pleasant time on this thread for a while after Jim banned himself, but now the snide comments are back. I decided to take a stand against them, rather than just let them go.

Some traits of narcissistic personality disorder:

“Lacks empathy: is unwilling [or, I would add, unable] to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.
Shows arrogant, haughty [rude and abusive] behaviors or attitudes.”

I post on this thread almost daily and have had to put up with this pattern of behaviour which I feel has been directed at me personally.

I apologise to the people who are not affected and just wish to see some good graphics.

But hopefully those who have also been affected personally will respect what I am attempting to do. To me this seems like important work. Just how do we deal with this type of behaviour?

I wouldn't put up with this behaviour in real life, so why should I have to put up with it on a thread I use daily? If it was coming from a stroppy teenager, I would naturally trust in the maturation process.

This is from a grown man, who I feel, if nothing is done, will continually lurk in the shadows, throwing in these narcissistic comments designed to upset.

I realise that some would advocate the use of a PM here. I do not want to start a private chat with this person, I would prefer to do this publicly.

I am not sure where this is going, I would like, at this stage to throw it open for discussion. I know we are all at different levels of evolution here, hopefully this will at least be an interesting topic for some.

I mean its a screenshot thread but I gave up posting because unless its 8k fucking NASA super computer people get upset, when in reality even 800x600 fits the thread name.
I reckon the intentional idea was "without compromisses" when I recall the previous thread title correctly. NeoGAF is known for its quality threads and posts and I think people want to go that route with screenshots as well. Not everyone is an awesome photographer or talented screenshoter (and don't have to be), but that's not necessary for good image quality anyway. FXAA should be offered by many games without any performance hit and increases the image quality dramatically over no AA at all. You could always try to downsample the screenshot to a bit lower resolution (like 1080p to 900p) to get rid off some edges if there's absolutely no AA. I'd rather looking at something not filling my whole screen but with smoth edges.

There will always be some guys trying to call you out but at the end of the day we all want cool screenshots to look at. If it's really a good one I guess people can overlook some jagged edges. On the other hand you know how GAF, these guys, WE tick. Jagged edges can really ruin an excellent screenshot. That's the way it is. It's a critical and enthusiastic community and most people will express their opinion in a constructive and polite manner. This isn't a off-topic video game thread in a hi fi or sports car forum where some of them are gamers.

It's about sharing the experience and maybe show off sides of game most people haven't seen yet. So, speaking for myself, I get more upset about the 10th screenshot, within hours or days, of the same cutscene I guess everybody have seen by now (I remember Rise of the Tomb Raider pretty good in that regard) than some jagged edges.

So, if you have screenshots worth posting, please share them with us!

I mean sure, I do get the point.

I've since then learned a few tricks in taking better shots, including as you said resolutions scaling and all that, as best I can with my rig currently, but my point being I just wanted to share some stuff which looked ok to me, but there was hardly any substance in the feedback (there was some which I took with me and saw their issue with) to help improve, but rather "lul what shit".

Its far from fun and really don't make you feel like posting images again, even if you do improve over time and learning more about everything.

And just to get back on topic; I took some Wildlands shots, not super impressive but OT at least :P

Lol, you're the same guy who said my screenshots wasn't worth looking at in the 2016 thread because I posted some with jaggies.
Erm... what? Could you show me a URL to that post? That would be great. Context, real evidence I actually said that etc. I can't imagine I told you your shots weren't worth looking at (I don't recall *EVER* said that to anyone) especially b/c some aliasing, as I don't really give a crap about that most of the time. Hell, I even refrain from comments when someone posts a Dolphin emulator shot of a 10 poly character using bilinear filtering.

Yeah let's all post shots not worth looking at, that is what this thread is all about, right? We all know why people come to this thread, and it isn't the shots of low-poly bilinear filtered scenes or 320x200 pixelart cruft.

Of course if things don't run well on your PC and you have to tune down things, that's totally fine. But a little effort isn't going to hurt and it will bring out better shots which will be better for everybody here and the large legion of lurkers who look at the shots here every day.

All the posts to this steams from the jaggy ass car I posted, I see no other way that to intemperate that towards my image.

There's nothing wrong with posting regular screenshots. I actually prefer them to the abundance of superrezzed, photoshopped, cropped, color corrected (with SweetFX) shots which for some reason have become the norm here. Half of screenshots in this thread do not represent the actual graphics quality of PC games anymore - and that's an issue in my opinion. It's understandable that more "artsy" shots are gathering the most attention and feedback but in no way does that mean that regular shots aren't welcome here, IMO.

Ah, well you misinterpreted it ->

First post: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=218155829&postcount=6797
where someone else whines about the jaggies above it, I just refer to a photomode.

Where felipe illustrates a low res credits shot will fit the description of the thread

to which I reply the post above, which was a general remark in the context of the reference Felipe made, not your shot. As in: low-effort shots from *ugly as fuck* old games. It had nothing to do with your shots, as I didn't even notice the AA.

The only thing I'd have to say about the shots you posted there would have been "The shot would have been better without the HUD". The last two lines of that post were related to your shots, but also others, but don't read too much into it. It was more a remark about 'if people put in a little more effort, like hide a HUD, the shots overall would be way better and we all benefit. But it's the same old debate about whether we want shots from games here to show off how they look, vs. arty shots to show off what we can do with what the game offers us. That will never settle, and that's fine.

Yawnnn. Damnnn these shots are dull.
A basic 2-shot cutscene.. Really?
Why bother posting that here? Are you like 12?
Couldn't you even try to move the camera?
Seriously man, is there something wrong with ya?
Don't post that lame shit up in here no more.
Git gud or get gone.

"STLM + my ReShade preset."

Wow. You did your own reshade.
I'm surprised anyone lets you near their computer.

Lets all just say what we really feel.

Right?

Damn we have one insecure dude right here.

You need grow a pair.

Welp, time to replay Alien Isolation. I'd kind of forgotten how gorgeous it is when at a high resolution, cleaning up all the messy aliasing. Ooof, so pretty.

Edit: Oh god and that TAA mod, I forgot about that. Yup, definitely time to replay.
TAA Mod? Wowsers, this is awesome.

TAA Mod? Wowsers, this is awesome.

Right?! Yeah I remember when that mod first came out but I completely forgot to try it. It really, really makes the game look incredible, especially when combined with some downsampling, which is easy because of how crazy good the game runs. Funny how an anti-aliasing mod can get me back into replaying a game.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

The default AA looks like it would give me a fucking epileptic fit.
While I was against it initially because of the blurring and ghosting in early implementations, after getting used to newer games using TAA and a well tuned post-TAA sharpening filter, I find it difficult to go back to older games without it.
There's so much aliasing in games that use physically-based rendering without a TAA implementation.
The Witcher 3 can be really bad for it, for example. My 1070 can only just run the game at 1080p, so downsampling is out of the question - and downsampling doesn't do much for this type of aliasing anyway.

FWIW I don't usually bother correcting people because who cares, but I suppose I should point out that I am a she, for those who don't know.

Am I allowed to comment on the content (not quality or w/e) of those trashy Skyrim waifu pics or is that a no-no too? xD I can say that R8TEDM3's shots are gorgeous if that's an acceptable trade-off!

... than to state it like you're looking at a pile of dog shite.
But I didn't do that ~~
you don't have to bash people's work to the ground if you don't like that work.
Dude what. No, seriously, what the hell? I said "Yeah. Eesh." (in response to someone giving constructive feedback).

That's literally all I said.

Then pharaohglyph just blew up. They called my post a "vituperative outburst". I had to look up that word in the dictionary, and it apparently means "bitter and abusive".

I mean, come the fuck on.

Parsnip, Jim, Morgan Stark I notice they post a lot. They also seem to often back each other up. Most people on here seem to get it, yet these three, I don't know, something seems odd..
Not sure if its a form of autism (unconscious) or simply narcissism (conscious).
Wow WTF?! Talk about an insane meltdown... This post reeks of projection, to be honest. I mean that is far closer to something I'd call a "vituperative outburst" than saying "Eesh".

Dragon Age: Inquisition

I wonder if that undercut was the most selected hair cut for male inquisitors. Would explain why mRyder is sporting it in the MEA promo too :P

Nice shot btw. Inquisition is very weird in that it's utterly gorgeous sometimes despite the older materials but in some ways has aged.

Oh it got a bit weird here.

For the record, I wouldn't have even said anything before had pharaoglyph not implied that posts/opinions/whatever from people who don't regularly take screenshots themselves are unwelcome. Whether that was made in jest or not I don't know, but surely everyone agrees that criticism from everyone is, in fact, welcome. It may not always be the most eloquent prose ever written, but certainly there's no malice behind it.

Parsnip, Jim, Morgan Stark I notice they post a lot. They also seem to often back each other up. Most people on here seem to get it, yet these three, I don't know, something seems odd..
I posted 40 times in the 2016 thread and so far 4 times in 2017 thread. That's not a lot. Maybe you are thinking of someone else. As for calling me out based on one post and inventing this conspiracy of 3 people, well, sure, okay then. Rest of that post isn't worth responding to.

Just take the feedback in stride and concentrate on the fact that ultimately it was mostly about Witcher 3's textures, not the actual framing of the shot, and move on.

And just so this post isn't just text, here's a screenshot from Hitman.

I wouldn't put up with this behaviour in real life, so why should I have to put up with it on a thread I use daily? If it was coming from a stroppy teenager, I would naturally trust in the maturation process.

There are some people in this thread who definitely need to improve their social skills. However, I'm sorry, but this time you're the one who's caused the friction - frankly, it just comes across precisely like teenage insecurity. Perhaps you didn't intend for it to be an insult, but calling people "autistic" was not only silly, but also disrespectful and harmful. Let's not use mental illnesses to demean people anymore, okay? If you don't like something someone says, why not ask yourself if it's worth making a huge deal out of? Is it really worth embarrassing yourself by tremendously over-reacting, calling people "autistic" and then going on a long rant? No. Why not take the high ground and reply calmly and diplomatically? Or not at all?

Pick your battles. When it comes down to berating people who made a valid point, albeit in a slightly acerbic manner, you simply embarrass yourself and piss others off. There is nothing to be gained from this, and it gets very tiresome.

Anyway, I haven't uploaded any new shots in months, so I decided to use that Temporal AA tool and hop back into Alien: Isolation. I've never been good at producing screenshots, and this game is particularly difficult to manage, but it's been nice to revisit the game, and the screenshotting process, again!

Not quite. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=229773979&postcount=752

My point was solely this: "I think he simply meant that there are more ways to say you didn't like the shots than to state it like you're looking at a pile of dog shite.". It's apparently the norm around here (and I think that's a problem) to be as hostile as possible for whatever reason when someone doesn't like a shot, its contents, the person who made it or all combined.

What's wrong with constructive criticism for a change? I mean, a tiny little name in the corner of a shot makes people lose their stomach contents around here. That's the level we're at. And that's the reason I made that remark, as I'm honestly sick and tired of it.

Do whatever the fuck you want with it, I don't really care anymore. I'm taking a break from this thread. No idea if I'll ever be back. If someone needs a camera or shader for reshade, you know where to find me.

That bandig you've got on blue sky... You changed colour of sky in post, right? Or is it merged from 2 images?

The only thing I've done is darken the image a little bit. The banding is clearly visible in the original image as well. :)

It's a single image btw, no merging.
