2023 is blessed with some nice gore tech.

MGS Rising also does this - kind of, but well ... both cases are not convincing, as the bodies consist of a uniform mass of flesh.
No bones where the blade gets stuck, no viscera, no organs ...
I just want more realism, more real time calculated effects, this doesn't only apply to gore, also to e.g. damage models (which basically is gore lol) or "real" fluids you can interact with.

Majority of devs unfortunately are ok with basic gore, that stuff would require a lot of time to be properly made.

I'm grateful that some devs are at least trying to evolve the whole thing.

Maybe in mortal kombat 12 we are gonna see something nice (although gore in these games only apply during cutscenes and fatalities)

Call of Duty World at War 15 years ago had some pretty good gore for the time:

The CoD gameplay hasn't evolved much in that time but the gore has been massively downgraded.

I don't necessarily want every body to explode into chunks, but it's surely way more satisfying to get the occasional gib than it is to do a poxy dance or watch a canned execution animation. Especially if you know the person you've gibbed is seeing the world from the perspective of a tumbling head.

Keeping the ragdoll physics active on dead bodies (and parts thereof) is the bare minimum. That's one of the many things I love about Hitman - the C4 underneath this little pile was enough to bring my poor old Xbox One to its knees, but it was a glorious sight.

Cyberpunk is pretty gory, nothing like shooting a gas canister next to an enemy and watching every limb explode from their body so all thats left is a torso

I'm glad games aren't shying away from perfecting different gore systems to their needs. Atomic heart had some surprisingly realistic real-time damage model for the robots and mutated humans. This type of thing that I want resources to go to. It enhances my enjoyment of the product.

Meh, that's the most basic form of gore where limbs and head are separated from the body.

It looks good...for an rpg.

Another ragdoll\gore lover here on gaf? Were have you been all this time dude?

When I mention 'this game needs body wounds, decals, blood, etc' people on here think I'm a wacko hah.

I've never played this game but the death animations, ragdolls, blood squirting, dying out on the ground, etc is looking really solid in this war game.

Ready or Not just introduced some nice gore/bleeding mechanics as well:

A game I have but haven't played unfortunately.

But yeah on the whole, 2023 is shaping up to be a gnarly violent experience. Dead Island 2 has great gore and is the main selling point for me. I didn't get to play DS Remake enough to really appreciate the gore. Callisto looked like it might have had ok gore in some aspects. For PC TLOU Part 1 this month, can't wait to see Random Madness video on it. I know he has been dying to play TLOU2 for a while. I'll also be getting TLOU p1 on PC (skipped on PS5), cannot wait to mess with the improved destruction/physics over part 2. Of course slaughtering fools will be fun too, hope there's a bullet time mod.

In Soldier of Fortune 2 I used to use the console to spawn a line of tramps, then test various weapons on them for the amusement of my co-workers. Anyway…

I've got that one but only managed about an hour in it. Last time I checked it was barely playable, the enemies were telepathic and never missed. The bleeding effect seem worth going back for another look.

edit: Tried it again and still can't get anywhere. Laser-accurate enemies, one-shot kills. My guy has bled quite a lot though.

Loved SoF growing up. You already know you slashed the fuck outta people's bodies with the knife to see those cuts. Didn't know about the console commands back then, sounds fun.

Maybe this would help? https://www.nexusmods.com/readyornot/mods/3

It's the 3rd most popular mod on nexus for RoN.

It's getting old now, but Killing Floor 2 still has some pretty gnarly and sophisticated blood and gore.

I'd like to see a Soldier Of Fortune 3 with current gen tech. It was so much fun blowing off limbs or carving people up in SoF2.

TLOU II has perhaps the best and most realistic depiction of gore in gaming.
Yea Part 2 hands down has the most believable human enemies in any game. The ragdoll physics combined with their animation rigging, gore and audio literally make you feel like your stabbing a real human when you get up close. It's pretty fucked up.

How was the impressive Dead Island 2 FLESH system created? As with every moment in every video game, the final result is the product of people working together. We visited Dambuster Studios to reveal how the Dead Island 2 team spanning multiple people across several different departments combined their skills to construct Dead Island 2's new gore tech. Join us as we dive into this interesting slice of Dead Island 2 development.

Apologies to Richard Smith, lead character artist on Dead Island 2 whose job title is incorrect at 1:43.

  • 🎮 Dead Island 2's FLESH system is a fully locational evisceration system for humanoids. It allows the player to see the dismemberment of the zombie's body from the point of impact, all the way through to the internal organs and bones.
  • 🎮 The developers wanted the system to be responsive to every hit, with feedback for every action.
  • 🎮 The development of the FLESH system started with a simple idea, the desire to dismember zombies in the game.
  • 🎮 The first prototypes of the system had procedural wounds that deformed the character's texture.
  • 🎮 The outer model of the zombie was developed to have thickness, like a Kinder Egg, allowing the system to show a hole through a zombie's body while keeping its overall shape and volume.

Flesh is looking better than I expected. Actually this is what I expected when Dead Island 1 released. I mean it was fun back then, but this really is some detailed stuff.

We know ND developers, along with many others in the industry, like Callisto Protocol devs and for damn sure Capcom with RE2R, researched real life gore material during development, and were deeply affected by it in the process to the point some considered therapy.
I've been saying for years that artists who have to work with this type of stuff probably have some pretty wild ass nightmares. We spend so many hours a week at our jobs that it's inevitable we have dreams about them, I know I did with various jobs over the years. Even if you don't dream (some people don't), I can't imagine that it doesn't negatively affect you in some way, especially with the example you gave.

Sniper Elite is the first time a gory game got kind of weird for me. Not that I was offended or thought it should be off the market, nothing like that, I just didn't care for the slow motion parts where they would show an x-ray of the bullet going through all the organs or brain of the enemy you just sniped. You could see all the gory details of the blood and guts exploding, and the bones cracking as the bullet went through. It was just off putting to me, like was that really necessary? And is someone out there getting off on it? Did the artists enjoy the process or were they grossed out a little bit?

In the end I just recognized that it was a graphically impressive accomplishment, and it was really cool that we were able to create realistic graphics like that, which we couldn't do in previous generations. I still feel that way about the graphics part, but since then I've actually not cared for excessive gore that much. I don't get off on watching dudes heads explode or their intestines falling out lol. I think that's a bit weird.

I really don't like to use this terminology, but i think that di2 ruined gore for me, it makes all the other gore system look like child play...

I agree. It's why I stopped buying after the original MW2. I enjoyed all the new tools and ways to troll people, but no gore in a shooter feels so artificial to me.

That Dead Island 2 footage actually reminds me a bit of fallout. Looks good

It is order of magnitudes better than fallout gore system.
