As much as I enjoyed Erdtree this year wow has this year sucked.

So many dropped games that can't hold my attention.

I hope this fall saves us.

Can a game site or Geoff Keighley do an award for Internet's Fav Game That Nobody Played?

Candidates are:

1. Concord
2. Concord
3. Concord
4. Concord

There's some great stuff this year, as with most years, but this is definitely the year of failed GAAS titles. Crazy that we've gotten so many huge failures this year alone.

I think calling it mid doesn't convey what I want to vote. It was a good year. But Best year tries to make it seem like it was the best year of the gen. I want an inbetween option of "it was a good year"

We got Stellar Blade, Black Myth, FF7 Rebirth, Infinite Wealth, ErdTree, Tekken 8, and Helldivers 2 mixed with some lesser known gems.

Erdtree, FF7, Stellar blade, infinite wealth, helldivers 2, unicorn overlord, dragons dogma 2, cygni, hell blade 2...

Plus remasters and remakes.

It has been at least a mid year.

Overall it's been okay. Not amazing, but not horrible.

By the end I think it will be great.

For someone like me who loves JRPG and Japanese games, this year has been fantastic and its not over yet.

I still have these game to look forward to.

FF7 Rebirth
P3 Reload
Paper Mario: TTYD Remake
Animal Well
Shadow of the Erdtree

And we have upcoming Astro Bot, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, and Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Pretty good year so far I'd say.

Yakuza 8, FF7 Rebirth, Erdtree. Mataphor still to come. I was too busy last year for BG3 abd am just starting that now.

Been a great year for me.

Erdtree saved this from being a total disaster of a year to this point
It's crazy because I see the other games listed but those games are so not it for me I guess.

I've tried I think every major release this year besides yakuza because I'm waiting for a bigger price drop. Last two I beat back to back so I didn't want to burn myself out.

Indies and AA games carrying most of the year for me so far; so the opposite of 2023. I literally dont have time to play it all.

I am bummed about the Avowed delay and Replaced. But looking forward to Age of Mythology, Starfield, Zelda, Black Ops, Stalker, Slitterhead, DQ3, Indiana Jones and more. Literally cant keep up, like every year since 2021.

Tbh, games like hell let loose kinda saved me lot of money this ps5 gen , because unlike ps4 era im not buying too many games anymore, especially with the political shit in gaming its just makes it tasteless

The West has shit the bed this year but Japan Gaming Chads have been feasting. Plus China and Korea showed up and were like we want a piece of this action too so it's more like Asia Gaming Chads

No kidding! We are getting JRPG back to back and just recently got Visions of Mana and fucking LOVING that game.

This game is fucking gorgeous and damn fun to play.

Nah, lots of other great games

Helldivers 2
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Rise of the Ronin
Stellar Blade

First half was great.

Second half really depends on AstroBot and Indiana Jones for me. Astro looks like GOTY material and I'm cautiously optimistic about Indy

It is a strange year in that there's no big standout AAAA caliber title, though

So kind of a "mid" year, but mid ain't bad

FF7 rebirth was good until the end where it just fell apart. Rise of the ronin was meh. Stellar blade was mid at best as the lore, dialogue and environments were mediocre. Shadow of the erdtree was nice I give you that. Black myth wukong was kind of ok, not as great as people made it out to be. Like a dragon infinite wealth was ok, but felt too draggy and I was rushing to finish it. This year has been meh as most of the good games came out last year.

By the end of the year there's still a lot of good to great games. Call it a disappointment but will still have big stuff like COD, wukong, Indiana Jones, FF7, astrobot, SH2 remake probably missing more. Still very solid. It will be a year remembered by all the massive failures though.

Honestly this year was filled with playing older games on the PS Plus service. The only games I bought were Helldivers 2, Granblue Fantasy Relink, FF7 Rebirth, D2 Final Shape and Concord (going to get a refund though). Plan to get Space Marine 2 and Astrobot, so there's no shortage of titles I look forward to this year at least. Currently playing Midnight Suns, which is turning out to be pretty amazing. I'd say this year has been pretty good.

That's where I'm at. I'm REALLY hoping the few titles I care about in the coming weeks/months land decently. But it's so hard to tell. This has been a really rough year for me for several reasons, and I wish the game aspect of things hit a lot harder across the board.

Thank god for Erdtree though, lol.

In terms of AAA, not a single year of this gen matches even a mid/mediocre year from last gen (2016)

2016 clears any year of this generation and that was a "mid" year from last gen.

AAA has turned to shit no matter how much people try to convince themselves it hasn't

This year has SUCKED this ENTIRE GEN has SUCKED

we are > 1/2 thru and this gen is on track to be the biggest dumpster fire ever

nothing new genre wise

studios hell bent on shoving their religion down everyone's throat

publishers chasing the next zeitgeist GAAS

the best game of this year so far is Prince of Persia The Lost Crown, which was brilliant don't get me wrong... but, that kinda shows how AAA games really are in limbo right now IMO.
the Elden Ring DLC was great too, but it's DLC, so great... but not an entirely new game or anything.

Stellar Blade was decent, and I only played a bit of WuKong but that game is also decent I guess (but from what I played, it seems severely overhyped)

it's a mid year so far... EDF6 came out and was a lot of fun with friends so far, but we haven't finished it yet. pretty fun, even tho it recycles a lot from EDF5

WoW: War Within is my #2 game release of the year. That is the depressing reality of my thoughts on games this year (Erdtree is #1)

This year has been great overall, I don't get all this sentiment.
2023 will probably be considered the best year of the gen thus far, but Sony coming back makes 2024 even better for me.

It's been a very good year if you actually enjoy playing games more than complaining about how there isn't anything to play on gaming forums. All the stuff I've had a blast playing this year:

Prince of Persia
Tekken 8
Infinite Wealth
Helldivers 2
FF VII Rebirth
Unicorn Overlord
Rise of the Ronin
Stellar Blade
Animal Well
Shadow of the Erdtree (GOTY)
Dragon's Dogma 2
Kunitsu-Gami
Wukong
Darkest Dungeon 2
System Shock

And I'm not even including remasters/rereleases like Tomba! Tomb Raider Trilogy, Jeanne D'Arc etc. In September alone I'm getting Astrobot, Warhammer and Plucky Squire. October brings Silent Hill 2, Metaphor and Shadows of the Damned remake, haven't even looked at Nov/Dec, I have way too much to play as is.

So it really comes down to:

1. Cynical gamers who have lost their passion for this hobby

2. One-dimensional gamers who only play one or two different genres (I would hope there aren't many of those on a "hardcore" gaming forum).

There's quite a leap between "mid" year and "best" year. I don't think anyone in their right mind would say it's been the best year, but there's been enough good releases (see TheDarkPhantom TheDarkPhantom 's list above) that it's certainly been better than a mid year. We still have another four months to go with games like Space Marine 2, Astro Bot, and Indiana Jones (although I'm skeptical of Indiana Jones but I'm also secretly hoping they prove my skepticism wrong).

There's also been some great DLC drops for existing games. ErdTree (admittedly, Elden Ring isn't my jam but the quality of ErdTree is unmissable), Splatoon 3 Side Order single player DLC. Hell, I'm even excited for the Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred DLC as it looks to vastly improve the game.

Really is a beautiful game

As an off topic aside: Would I need to know anything about the Mana universe to enjoy Visions of Mana? I never really got into the series in the past but that looks fantastic and I'd like to give it a shot.

This few weeks have been stellar though.

I am very far into Wukong, I bought Shadow of the Ninja and Astro Bot comes out this week. I have yet to buy Erdtree and I've played Tekken 8, Like a Dragon, Stellar Blade and FFVII before.

There are very good games out there, but they largely get developed in Asia.

2024 is the poster child for this entire generation, frankly.

Helldivers 2 was a solid bit of fun till it got nerfed, so if it wasn't for Shadow of the Erdtree and Black Myth: Wukong, I'd say this was the worst year in about a decade. We'll remember 2024 for how many games failed, not for its successes.

I've had fun with some indies and some AA's like Flintlock and Dungeons of Hinterberg. Hellblade 2 totally worked for me In the end (I think it is better than the first one). I know Kena is old, but it only came out on xbox this year and that was pretty good. But other than that, not a lot of all-timers for sure.

I would argue we did get one new genre and that's the vampire survivors type of game now.

Erdtree, Stellar Blade and Helldivers 2 have been the highlights for me and that's pretty good.
Still need to get around to Unicorn Overlord, Black Myth, System Shock Remake and FFVII Rebirth.
