This is an odd choice for the iPod shuffle, since the lack of a screen becomes more of an issue when you have greater capacity. I'm fine with 1 GB of long DJ mixes for the gym on mine, but if I was trying to manage 4 GB of individual songs, I'd be annoyed.

Any word on the 5G iPods rumored for this summer? I need to upgrade my current 3G 20GB model by November, so I've been waiting to hear what my options are...

The WWDC begins the first week of June, so I would expect any iPod (and iBook) announcements to come then if anything.

Why exactly does anyone buy a crippled iPod Shuffle anyway? The lower price is attractive, but with no screen, it makes no sense. And Apple is intentionally hamstringing this technology as LCDs are dirt cheap. I would buy a 5GB iPod if it was priced reasonably, but they're not. So I'll just have to do without until someone releases a decent 5GB+ LCD-equipped MP3 player for $100. PEACE.

I could go for a 2GB iPod shuffle... but a 4GB? That's weird as it goes directly against the 4GB iPod mini, which is their best selling model. A 4GB iPod shuffle would have to be $200, too. I guess if Apple wanted to go through with a 4GB shuffle then they could sell the 512MB at $70, 1GB at $100, 2GB at $130 and 4GB at $160...

I would have thought so too, but the shuffle mentality is starting to really grow on me. The last few times in the car I've always put my Ipod mini on shuffle mode and it's like one big radio station with no commercials but it plays music that I like. The fact that the songs come up randomly and I don't care what's next is really starting to grow on me. I keep hearing songs that I haven't listened to in a while cause I'm constantly swapping different albums on and off that thing.

How did Apple manage to get people to "upgrade" their MP3 players? What's worse is that people choose the timing of the buy so they don't miss out on "upgrades"...wtf

That pretty much reflects how I feel about it. I love my shuffle, but at that size it starts to defeat itself.

If you want 4gig+ just get a mini.

it's just a rumor isn't it? the shuffle is selling well enough, I don't see why Apple would want to upgrade it.

Well, Apple's strong sales will encourage lower prices on future installments. I say updated shuffles will be here by the end of summer.

Phasing out of 512 shuffles will happen in August. 1gb will be priced at the original 512 price. Apple will start support with the mini (*?*?*?*) putting the price bakc up to 250 for the 4gb, with good reason. New color screens from our good friends at Samsung. It might be looking up. Real up if some of the stuff i've heard is correct. But i take it all with a grain of salt.

And the Itunes video store will be launching its own independent site no latter than September. The video size is not a joke though. Dont know what that means but thats what i've heard from someone who works with the apple camp.

And whoever said they should make a waterproof shuffle you need to be comended. I would love to swim and listen to music at the same time. But the headphones for such things cost more than the damn player.

I can see the video iPod and the iTunes video store coming, judging be the move Apple's been making. Maybe not this year, but definitely coming. Although I can't see myself watching full-length features, or even TV episodes on the go, it does sort of make sense for them to sell MTVs. And I hope they would consider selling short films as well and help popularise the format. A lot of talent and ideas come from short films and they're well respected as an artform in Europe, but giving them commercial value would do a lot for filmmakers.

I just picked up a 30 gb photo today. I'm sure a video ipod is coming soon, but I was really just looking for an mp3 player that works with my powerbook and holds all my music. I don't see the screen on the new ipod beating out the psp, at least not at a decent price, so I think I should do fine with the two of them working in their own areas.
