360 controller Dpad

The down direction on my dpad is not very sensitive at all. I can often press down on it and the system doesn't register it. Also, in all other directions, the pad feels smooth. When I press down, I feel the plastic of the Dpad hitting the plastic chassis of the controller. If I press hard down, it always registers. It makes playing Xbox Arcade games and peck-typing the softkeyboard really frustrating.

Do I just have a defective dpad, or is it a common manufacturing error?
 
some days ago while playing DOA4 i noticed "right" on my dpad is not responsive at all..

If I don´t press it down hard it will not register at all.. all other directions work fine.

Some days later I spoke to a friend, and he has the same exakt problem with his DPAD..

reading this makes me wonder if this is not a problem with all DPAD:s?
 
When you press right, do you hear a kind of "click" noise as well?

It seems like my Dpad isn't seated right or something.

When I push right it reacts fine... my down is what's giving me problems.
 
My Dpad had the same isssue. After about a week of DoA4, the problem just kind of disappeared. Perhaps the Dpad simply needs to be broken in?
 
I think it was the other way round for me.. I think a week of DOA4 just broke it :)

because it seemed to work fine earlier.. no I don´t have a clicking sound.. it just does not react if I don´t press hard
 
I always get the feeling that whenever I press right on my dpad it also hits down or up randomly. It's almost as crappy as the d-pad on the GC.
 
Mine seems to be getting worse, not better. I noticed it when I first got the controller, and now it's reacting worse.

I'm not going ape on the thing either, just playing Hexic and Joust and whatnot.
 
I have the exact same problem, with "clicking" sound and all. I first had it on the right direction, but then I tried pushing it in with a little more stregth and a funny thing happened. Something inside of the dpad must have moved, because the problem moved to the down direction, like yours. After a bit of playing, it moved again to the right, and there's where it has been since then.
 
I have the same problem pressing "left" on the d-pad of one of my controllers. I think overall the X360 controllers have terrible d-pad quality because they figure no one will use them. I'm glad I have the arcade stick for fighters because I can't imagine playing a fighting game with it :\
 
While I haven't had any problems with my 360 Dpad, I do find the sensitivity a bit floaty. Sometimes I'll hit right or left, and it will constantly float from right-up to right-down. Weird shit.

The GC dpad is That bad, just a bit small. I think your giant mutant hands are probably hindering your efforts.
 
I got the exact same problem.
Whenever i press down on the d-pad I get a clicking noise and it almost never reacts. But then I rotate the d-pad a bit and usually I get it to function properly again, but in a few minutes it usually breaks again.

MS really did a poor job on those d-pads. I wonder if they even thought about how we're going to play all those fighting games without a proper d-pad.

I was gonna post the exact same thing, except that I use my stick for Joust, not fighting games. (Yes, even Joust was almost unplayable with the stock D-Pad.) :(

The Saturn pad (and the gen 6 button) has the best d-pad made, and you can buy them for the PS2. ;)

Back to the 360 dpad problem. I had no problems with my pad for the first few days but after that the right button was not responding that well at all. I opened it up and swapped the dpad with an s-controller one and its working fine now.

Well, I think it's your tiny mutant-infant hands that enable you to use it. It works "alright" as a secondary button (like in Metroid Prime) but there's no way in hell you'll be able to use it to steer in any game.
 
The best d-pad I've used is the one on the Logitech PS2 controllers.

I use the 360 corded controller on my PC and I don't like the d-pad on it.

Same thing here. I have 3 controllers and they don't all do it. Seems off and on. I wondered why this hasn't come up before. The d-bad and buttons should be designed to be fucking indestructible as they get hammered on a daily basis.
 
I shipped my stock 360 wireless controller back to MS over the d-pad errors. I haven't gotten a replacement yet, but the second wireless controller I bought has a d-pad that works beautifully.
 
The only thing I really dislike about 360. If you are going to charge $49.99 for a fucking controller, give us one with a usable D-pad. Out of all the 9 or so 360 controllers I have used the D-Pad is a unresponsive piece of shit.

So what do they do...release an AVERAGE at best arcade stick solution for how much?? $59.99......fuck you.

Sorry just kind of bitter..I mean its a damn D-pad for most games its not useful anymore true...but for 2D fighters and most 2D games ESPECIALLY with a killer app like the arcade on yours hands its just stupid they gave it this treatment. Apparently the Mad-Catz controller is better in this regard....who woulda thunk it!?
 
This explains some of my errant RR6 powerslides. I always use the d-pad in racing games. Always.

I guess we just have to sit and wait for a 3rd party to show M$ exactly how it's done.
 
I've complained about the pad since I first got the 360. And I had the same problem, down just doesn't seem 'seated' right on the pad. But when I play old Live Arcade games, it works fine for me, just going through menus does it 'stick'. Still sucks though.
 
The way it's put together it seems more like an analog nub with a dpad on top. Using the training mode in DOA4 shows how inaccuate the dpad is, it's all over the place. All the directions move fine on mine though, so I guess I am lucky it's not broken.
 
My Xbox 360 controller's D-Pad is quite funked up as well... they saved not only by removing pressure sensitive buttons functionality, but also used a cheap D-Pad to boot...
 
I'm noticing similar issues as well, it's easiest to see when I'm trying to navigate the XBox dashboard...when I'm trying to navigate menus or trying to fill/type in blanks the cursor will go all over the place at times, it's annoying. Like a previous poster said, you can also notice it when using DOA4's training mode too.

Does this issue happen both on wireless and corded controllers? I'm using a wireless one myself.
 
I've noticed the same problem with my wireless controller. When I press down on the d-pad it doesn't always register that it was hit.
 
The 360 has the worst d-pad in the history of gaming. I bought the frickin' DOA4 stick just because it was impossible to play with the regular controller. XBL Arcade games suck where it's preferrable to use the d-pad as well.

Yes, it is a very awful D-Pad... I did not expect it because aside from this point, the pad is pretty much perfect :(.

Where is the Square button anger here ;) ?
 
My Dpad is too sensitive to the right. It often changes the blade when I try to browse down on the dashboard. Annoying.
 
Same here, sucky right and up d-pad buttons on my first [ pack in ] wireless controller and sucky right d-pad button.... Thanx Microsoft <_<

Yeah, the SNES has always had my favorite d-pad. The GameBoy Micro has a pretty nice one as well. It looks like that's what they'll be puttin on the DS Lite, so I'm pretty happy about that.
 
I'm sure it'll be fixed in future revisions, but early adopters, as often happens, have to suffer for their impatience :)

I hooked a wired 360 pad up to my PC and played Street Fighter 2 with it. I couldn't even pull off a single fireball using the dpad. I'm sure the XBL Arcade port's gonna be a blast for people without a stick!
 
The 360s Dpad truely does suck. Mine is really shit when trying to hit left or down, most of the time it does nothing. I also sometimes change blades by accident. To make a Dpad worse than Sony's is an accomplishment in itself.

It has certainly made the DOA4 stick a better investment than I expected, fighters will be pretty crappy on this Dpad considering text input is so shit.
 
I really hope that they fix this in future revisions of the controller.

The argument that not many games use it is pretty off. Almost every single XBArcade game uses it.

Playing Hexic, Bejeweled, Smash TV, etc is a total pain in the ass because of this. And using the analog sucks even more because it's very hard to get absolute diagonals.
 
Why is it so hard to make good d-pads? The last really good d-pad I used was on the genesis 6 button controller.
 
I didnt know what problems i would have with the controler, but i just found out that that my new controler feels nothing like my old one. The dpad is different at least it feels different than the old 360 controler i was playing around with. The plastic feels cheap on the new one i just got. While the other one feels better.

I'm trying to see if there really is a differance but wont know till i'm home. Something is just funny about the dpad on this new 360. Its pissing me off.

That's what makes it so sad. Everything else about the controller is fantastic to me, until I have to use the muddy, unresponsive D-pad. So close to perfection, yet so far...

I'm keeping my hopes up that this will be ironed out in future revs.
