360 controller Dpad

the d-pad is lame... playing doa 4... everytime i press foward i jump foward. so trying to do kick counters is very frustrating at times. i know they tightened up the controls but the controller doesnt help at all.

I agree. I only use the d-pad for moving in Tony Hawk games but I could only use it for five minutes with THAW and I returned the game the next day out of digust (oh, who am I kidding? the game itself was pure shit). It's a shitty, shitty little control pad. Not nearly as bad as the Smaller-Than-GBA pad on the GC, but still bad.

I don't understand how the media could have harped on about the pad being one the best ever, yet missed how crappy the dpad is.

The dpad will play a very important role in most XBLA games. So, I'm really disappointed in MS for allowing such a design flaw. Hopefully, they hear what their userbase want and bring out a pad which is better suited to XBLA and Fighting games.

If I recall in a mag they showed all the prototype controllers and one of them was this really good looking 6 button pad…maybe release that? :D

I'm pretty sure they're the same size. I think Nintendo used the same pad on the GBA and GCN to save money and make manufacturing easier. I might be wrong though...

It could be all in my mind and you could be correct. I suppose when you pick up the tiny GBA, the control pad seems natural, but picking up the heavier GC controller with the bulkier buttons makes the pad look microscopic.
 
come to think of it, now that you ppl mention all these issue with the D-pad, .. I do now remember having a small issue one time recently I went to my local EB and played on an Xbox 360 kiosk. They still had one of those old demo disks playing (the one with the Kameo demo, King Kong demo, COD2 demo, etc.). I was trying to navigate the blades, and I remember trying to press one of the directions on the D-pad, but the Xbox 360 seemed to register another direction (something like, I tried to press 'down' on the D-pad, but the Xbox 360 registered 'left' instead) :(
 
For me the placement of the dpad pretty much makes it useless for fighters. I know most disagree but i think the dual shock is the right way to set things up. With the rebirth of retro games it's even more true.
 
The 360 pad is different, I have trouble going through the fricken menu hub without accidentally going to the next page or something. The Xbox dpad sucked, but it was useable. No accidental diagonals, unlike that shitty shitty SF Nuby pad they were passing off as a controller 'for fighters'.

Hey, if I can get 2500+ wins in 3rd Strike online with an S-Controller, anyone can.
 
Its not impossible to use but some are worse than others. The dpad on the controller that came with my console has no issues. For the 2nd controller, I returned it twice and eventually got a good one. I have no problem playing DOA 4 with it. The Sega Saturn /genesis 6 button controller dpad is the only one I ever used that was worth a crap anyway.

interesting point about the retro games ... I forgot that most retro console games were obviously designed with a D-pad in mind because there were no analogue sticks back then..

They don't have to for XBox. X360 introduced a lockout chip for peripherals.
 
I've found the analog stick to work perfectly fine for regularly dpadful activities. It has those little bumps in the four main directions, so you can always tell exactly how you're pushing it.

I've never had a problem it doing one direction when I wanted another, it's always a matter of sensitivity. But I've never had a problem in DOA4 because I'm pretty firm with my button presses.

The 360 is different. MS has some kind of DRM happening with the controllers and third parties have to pay royalties, which I don't think they had to do with Xbox or PS2 or other consoles before.
 
i noticed the D-Pad sucking right off the bat when i was scrolling the menus of the demo disk at the strore.

Press down caused the diagonals to be triggered, then my selection page was toggling Left to Right when I just wanted to go Down.

Now I read this about DOA4 proving the craptitude of the 360 D-PAD.


Hail Sega Saturn Controllers, Hail Sega logistics for releasing a PS2 version.

Stupid 360 USB isn't compatible with PC USB controllers..... Sega has USB Saturn controller for PC.... screw you MS
 
I bought a second wireless controller today, and it has the exact same problem. Except on the new one, pressing right is less sensitive instead of down.

It's the same thing though. Pressing right, I can feel and hear the Dpad plastic hitting the chassis of the controller... just like down on my first one.

I know what you're talking about. Its like the pad is off-center or something. Its down that doesn't seem to press completely for me.
 
Does anybody with a wired pad have the same problem?

My premium bundle wireless has a shitty left on the D-pad, but my wired one is perfect. Anybody else have it this way as well?
 
My first controller with my premium pack, the "left" direction didn't register every now and then. It became frustrating as hell. I noticed it because I always use the D-Pad to go through menus (it's faster than using the analog stick usually). So, I decide to go and buy another wireless controller. With the new controller, same problem - different direction. On the new controller, it's the "down" direction that doesn't register from time to time.

It's a simple hardware design problem with the d-pad.

Extremely frustrating!!! It seems that people who don't notice it either (a) have perfect wireless controllers or (b) don't use the D-Pad that much.
