The volume is pretty good at high. Not sure what the complaints are about. The volume with headphones isn't that high though.

I agree. Is there a portable headphone amp that one can buy? One that uses, like, a AA or AAA battery? I can hook it through my amped PC speakers, and into my headphones from there, if I wish, but that's not exactly what I'd call portable.

I was quite dissapointed to find out I have misplaced my copy of Star Fox 64 3D... to me it seemed one of the best ways to demonstrate how awesome the 3D effect would appear on the XL

Hope you come across it. Not to rub it in but it really looks fantastic on the XL.

I have a cheap Fiio amp, which is very convenient to use. It doubles the volume.

Ok, so Nintendo is officially stupid. How in the world do you make the screen bigger, only to compromise the image quality. And why haven't they fixed the stupid screen scratching problem from the first generation? Beyond me!

Fiio E6, but it has a rechargeable battery.

In regards to needing an amp for the XL: you guys must be using high impedance headphones? Normal portable headphones should have rather low impedance and thus be driven easily by the XL and be plenty loud. Personally, full volume is too loud for mine, I have to go about 3/4 volume.

If I plugged in my proper, high quality headphones though I guess I'd need an amp too.

Yep, every DS game looks better on the DSi XL but sprite based ones in particular look glorious.

Don't forget it's also lighter hence more comfortable IMO than the 3DS XL.

I love my 3DS XL, just saying. =P
Aaargh! You have made my decision harder! I might grab a 3ds XL just so I can play the newer games too as I can't afford both. But damn it I will probably be playing mostly Ds games on this thing. Damn it Nintendo!

Maybe without a frame of reference I will be ignorant enough to think DS games on the 3DS XL will look good. I did own a DS lite years ago but I wonder if I will secretly fume over the washed out and blurry visuals.

Glad there was a demo of Rhythm Thief on the eshop, pretty fun game and was great to try

I'll pick it up in the future, can't now cause I've got too much games.

But, where is my Elite Beat Agents 3DS :( :'(

Hold start or select while the game boots up, and DS games will be about the same size and just as sharp as on a DS Lite.

Anyone had this with their 3DS XL?

While playing FF Theatrythm, the XL would suddenly turn off completely. No sleep mode or anything and the battery charge is high.

It happened once during the same day only while playing FFT. I played other games without any problems.

Having gotten my 3DS XL yesterday and I had problems at first with getting the games from my old 3DS (the bottom screen on my 3DS became black/broke). I finally got everything to transfer (especially the eShop license, which allowed me to download my old games). The actual games didn't transfer and I think Nintendo really needs to revamp how they do eShop a bit a la PS+ (either that or I didn't select the right option on the original 3DS). You upload the save data to eShop and download it along with the games but that's just me. And it's tied to your account, not the physical hardware.

Anyway, the 3DS XL is so much better in every conceivable way. Although it feels more like a toy than the original 3DS, it fits more comfortably in my hands and the screen size makes it easier to play games. I played Theatrhythm last night and I could tell the difference. I was having an easier time playing the Expert battle tracks, which wasn't the case with the original 3DS.

Overall, I would say it's a better system than the 3DS and I'm somewhat bitter about the fact that my launch 3DS didn't last as long as I wanted.

I had...some game crash, can't remember (not FF, maybe Mighty Swithch Force) but on my normal 3DS; possibly just the games have a bug.

Not an extreme problem. Twice though isn't great. Is it during the same song or anything?

The games stay on the SD card. Swap the old SD card into the new system, or copy its contents over to your new card.

We need some sort of big red text that states this every new page, but it's the most common complaint.

I tried copying the contents to the new card and it didn't seem to work.

EDIT: Weird, I guess the system transfer was what got the contents to appear.

I've never seen anyone talk about this, but remember how when you are charging your OG 3DS the screen brightness goes a little bit up, like an extra level? That defenitely doesn't happen with the XL :( but it's ok, since I find it brighter anyway. Also, my cat is responsible for my XL second scratch. :'( at this rate I'll need a new one when the next redesign happens :p

Hey guys quick question. What case should I get for this thing? I was gonna order the Hori black hard one, but its release date isn't until the 4th of September. Does anyone have any other cases that they recommend?

Mutant Mudds is so awesome and such a joy to play on these screens. It's also pretty tough but the visuals and retro style is so attractive to me that I find myself trying harder on the levels and after a while I learn little workarounds to most tough spots that seemed almost inconceivably difficult at first.

IMO, that's about the best thing and the highest praise I can possibly say about a videogame, period. I'm not saying it's the "best game ever" but so far it's the most fun I've had with my XL, and it has me believing that it would be a complete shame if the 3DS sees its life cycle without a Castlevania or Mega Man in this style.

I know he color saturation is kinda crappy to begin with but can anyone confirm that the colors are less saturated when you play a DS game scaled instead of at 1:1. I think that's the case but i may be going crazy.

I think the saturation is the same regardless of ratio. I tried it twice today at different ratios (I decided to buy a 3DS XL today). Playing Dragon Quest IV on it in full and then in 1:1. Didn't see much of a difference.

Looking at Youtube videos, the game looks more colorful than what I experienced, but it isn't bad. I don't have a DS to compare to right now, however. But I think thinks are muted definitely. Though, colors are still nice.

I'm lucky since I'm going in ignorant. The sharpness isn't terrible as I thought it would be (but again I'm ignorant since I don't have a DS), especially since you can now play with the system further from your eyes due to the big screens. I did start worrying that I made a mistake when I noticed the colors weren't as crisp as I saw online, but things are still pretty good. If I had to do it again, would I just get a DSi XL? I don't know. Maybe, since there aren't really any 3DS games that interest me tremendously, though I did buy Zelda and Mario 3D Land today. And they are darn expensive even used since NIntendo games hold their value so long--this was especially shocking since I'm primarily a PC gamer and can buy 20 PC games for less than on 3DS game! :)

Yet, I've still played DQ IV for hours today. Picked up a bunch of DS games at Gamestop with a coupon. :) I bet they look much better on a DS, but I sort of don't want to see them on a DS so I don't regret my 3DS purchase. :)

It really is. It was the first game I popped in and it didn't disappoint. Right now Starfox, Super Mario 3D Land, and certain sequences in MGS 3D are the absolute best demonstrations of the XL and the 3D effect for me.

MGS3D: The fight with the End in 3D with surround sound and a great pair of headphones on the XL is easily one of the most immersive experiences I've had with a game. The cross talk can be a bother but it's worth it considering how amazing certain sequences are.

So the Snake Eater port is good too? I have it on PS3 but I reckon there would be more chance of me playing it on 3DS.

Anyone know of any decent cases to hold 3DS cartridges?

Playing with the original 3DS the past year made me realize that. Truly a bad gaming handheld. So happy it only took a year for the XL to emerge.

Yea, XL really turned the 3DS around for me. The OG was just too shitty and small for me to enjoy and a real chore to play for extended periods of time. Glad they realized it was a disaster and gave us the XL so soon.

It's definately pales in comparison to the HD version, and it chugs here and there (swamp with the crocodiles runs terrible for example) but it's pretty competent on it's own right.

I have to agree with this. After playing my XL it really provides a sharp contrast with the build quality and design of the original 3DS.

My GF asked to play some of my Mario DS games and I almost don't have the heart to let her use the original model.

The controls for the Ps3 version have not aged well, in the control department the 3DS is miles ahead.

With the CPP its really good but that isn’t an option right now.

yep, MM is a gem all around. I really wish a sequel was being made right now

How much battery is left when the light turns red? Not flashing. WiFi off max brightness, no 3D. 1 bar of battery.

I can still play for around 35-40 minutes with red light

I really thought it was just me comparing to iOS and Vita/PSP games but man. I really hope they revamp this system and their prices. But knowing Nintendo, probably not going to happen, ever.

Really want to get the Nintendo 3DS XL or PS Vita but damn, there still not many games I am interested in playing =/
I have both and I wish I could have 3DS library and promise and the Vita hardware though I will admit that the Vita library blows away the 3DS library at the same point in their respective lives. However given the Vita's abysmal sales and Sony's financial state I'd probably go with the XL first.

Will Nintendo replace a unit for a single dead pixel?
A few years back they exchanged my DS lite because of a single dead pixel. The customer service rep did stress to me that having a single dead pixel was considered within working order but allowed me to do the exchange regardless. Just give them a call, if they say no . . . call again and talk to another rep.

Wondering the same. If they do... will they replace it with a brand new unit or a refurb? Gamestop told me they'd give me a new one and would let me do the system transfer at the store.

Damn thing is an eyesore.

Is it just me and my mindset, or are these eshop games on the expensive side?
IMHO 3D classics should not be more than $3.
Problem with 3D Classics is they have the value of $3-5 games (mostly) but they supposedly cost way more to produce than Nintendo had initially planned for. I think that's why they don't seem to want to release anymore, as the audience willing to pay that premium for 3D is too small.

That's a stuck pixel. I have one right in the middle of the top screen too. Once you see it once, your eyes always go to it. Returning the XL to Target and just going to tell them that the XL turns itself off at random times. I doubt they even need an excuse that elaborate. If the place you bought it from wont take the exchange, Nintendo's pretty good about it.

Looked through the last few pages, didn't see anything about this.

Anyone know how easy it is to swap the shell of the 3DS XL? I'll probably want to change it to a custom design.

Bottom Shell is extremely easy to take off, but you need to screw two nails off before you can take it off all the way.

And sadly, looking really closely at the unit and trying to clip it off, I don't think the top shell can come off after all, even though I'm sure someone said it could in an impressions article or something. :(
