40 FPS modes coming to Spider-man and Miles Morales on PS5

For Marvel’s Spider-man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-man: Miles Morales.

New 40 FPS fidelity mode via 120 Hz output, and other small improvements.

Basically they added the mode they did for Ratchet.

Also added option to unlock the frame rate when using 120 Hz and VRR.

New Features

  • 120 Hz Display Mode (together with system settings)
    • Reduces input latency
    • Increases frame rate target of Fidelity graphics mode to 40 fps
  • Support for VRR via system settings
    • When 120 Hz Display Mode is off, slightly increases dynamic resolution targets
    • When 120 Hz Display Mode is on, the frame rate is unlocked and varies based on gameplay
  • Improvements to ray-traced reflection quality at glancing angles in low-dynamic-resolution scenarios
All of our PS5 titles support VRR (variable refresh rate) as of today, with the latest game and system updates. Because our titles are already built to have very stable frame rates, the main effect of the VRR system setting will be to slightly increase dynamic image resolution targets. However, if your TV also supports 120 Hz high frame rate input and the 120 Hz Display Mode option is active along with VRR, you will get a variable, uncapped frame rate that can exceed your chosen Graphics Mode’s 30 or 60 fps target by 50% or more (depending on gameplay).

And while it's not an easy things to do, more games should target 45FPS/1440p on consoles.

It would do wonders with a lot of games, sadly it seems Insomniac are the only ones implementing it.
It's a lot more complex than just "lazy devs", but now with the democratization of VRR & VRS this could be more and more common

Why can’t all developers do this on Ps5. It works great on Ratchet. Really wish Horizon did this too. Wonder if it’s embedded in their own code.
Because most games struggling to run at 30 fps at native 4k. You basically need the game to be above 30 fps at ALL times to be a locked 30 fps. For 40 fps, you dont just need it to be around 40, you need it to average 45 fps and ensure it never drops below 40. They are ensuring that by implementing DRS to cover the 1% framedrops but not every game runs at 45 fps.

What they can and should do is add a 1800p 40 fps option. It's 30% fewer pixels and that should give them an extra 30% more framerate but things dont always scale down 1:1.

Never saw a game locked at 40fps. Really wish I could see that in motion, kinda curious to check out the result.

No. 60FPS does wonders.

This is dumb.

The baseline framerate should be 60FPS, even if it means sacrificing resolution to 1440p.

I think by next gen we’ll have alot more options when it comes to options on how games run on consoles, Insomniac one of the ones paving the way

Higher. Ratchet is already mostly native 4K at 40fps and has already a mode running locked 60fps at >1440p.

For those wondering, 40fps really isn't that bad at all.
Granted, it obviously isn't better than 60fps, but definitely smoother than 30fps and much more acceptable.

Going forward, especially with Unreal engine 5 having a hard time hitting 60fps I can live with 40fps.
I just hope it's available for those games that can't reach 60fps.

I've been locking framerate at 40FPS on some PC games at 4K for awhile now. It is often the case that I can't do 60 or even 50, but can easily do 40. It's how I played a lot of CP77. Much easier on the eyes than 30 even if it "feels" similar somehow.

Most games can't even get 60FPS/1080 and you want UHD at 60 as a minimum?

Though, if your TV supports 50hz (despite being a 60/120hz TV) you can also use that. Thanks Europe!

The game can hit 60, already has those modes.

This is so they can boost framerate in the highest graphics mode (fidelity) so you can have a smoother experience that feels much closer to 60.

I don't think you can on a console. There's no way to output games @ 50/100hz

Used it with R&C. 60fps is still noticeably smoother than 40fps, but 40fps is still way better than 30fps. The perceived jump from 30 to 40@120Hz is bigger than from 40 to 60. Thats what I felt, when testing the different options in R&C. 30fps felt like "walking through glue" in comparison.

40 fps without motion blur is ridiculously smooth. People need to start turning off motion blur in anything above 30 fps.

30fps is never ideal, so when you're that low being 1/3 higher makes a huge difference. Anyone scoffing at 40 has no clue how much better it feels, even if it's only 2/3 of 60fps.

40fps as an option for those with the display for it is a wonderful free upgrade.

Most of them can, they just don't know or care about it enough to implement and QA.
