Some Notes:
- Beverly Hills for Best Rock Song? Oy vey.
- The Album of the Year Nominations couldn't be much more traditional, it's quite disappointing. You'd swear McCartney died or something, looks like they've moved that appreciation over to the elderly too.
- Go Funeral! Also: The Arcade Fire were also nominated for Best Original Song for Television/Film for "Cold Wind"' from Six Feet Under.
- Interesting to see Coldplay entirely out of the Alternative categories. I am under the impression that the previous two albums were stuck there, the Rock label opened them up to more categories.
- As expected Kanye/Carey domination...I'll ignore John Legend for now.
- If you go to the link, you'll find the Film Score nominations...which are really quite good. FINALLY Michael Giacchino gets some sort of recognition for his amazing work on the Incredibles, plus the best piece of score from Episode III gets some attention as well.
- Go Feel Good Inc. as well...but I can't help put feell that Kelly Clarkson got robbed. Since U Been Gone was, simply, the best single released and the best record produced.
Mariah Carey's comeback came full circle Thursday as she was nominated for eight Grammy awards, including album of the year for The Emancipation of Mimi and song and record of the year for her torch ballad We Belong Together.

Carey's eight nominations was tied with John Legend and Kanye West. Soul crooner Legend's nominations included best new artist, while his mentor West is up for album of the year for Late Registration and song of the year for Gold Digger.

Other multiple nominees included 50 Cent, Gwen Stefani, U2 and Bruce Springsteen.

Breakout band the Arcade Fire of Montreal scored a nomination for best alternative music album for Funeral while rocker Neil Young received two nods: one for best rock album for Prairie Wind and best solo rock performance for The Painter.

Springsteen was among the surprises — his Devils & Dust was nominated for song of the year, along with Rascal Flatts's Bless the Broken Road, Legend's Ordinary People, Carey's We Belong Together and U2's Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own.

U2, nominated for five awards, was also represented in the album of the year category for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. Besides Carey and West, other nominees in the category were Stefani for Love. Angel. Music. Baby and Paul McCartney's Chaos and Creation in the Backyard.

Besides We Belong Together and Goldigger, record of the year nominees included the Gorillaz' Feel Good Inc. featuring De La Soul, Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Stefani's Hollaback Girl.

Can someone explain to me the difference between a "Record of the Year" and an "Album of the Year"?

Record: Single Recording of a Single Song, but rather than based on lyrics it is based on the overall production.

Album: Album

I've seen some horrible nomination lists in my time, but that one might take the award for "Worst Awards Ever".

It's certainly among the final nominees.

Fiona Apple got a Pop Album nomination.

Kylie Minogue's I Believe in You got a best Dance Recording nomination.

I can't complain.

What is the difference between song and record of the year?

I just want 'Hate it or Love it' to win atleast one award just so The Game and 50 will have to go accept the award together.

Song is a songwriter award, record(ing) of the year is a producer's award.

The biggest surprises are that neither Coldplay nor Bruce Springsteen got into Album of the Year, I think.

It's surprising to see Springsteen in there at all, his album is older. Coldplay's spot was clearly taken by McCartney...I swear, it is actually like they think he died.

Springsteen's album came out in February.

I think Coldplay's spot was taken by U2 (though Vertigo received many nominations last year, so this was inevitable). I guess the nomination committee deceided why go for a U2 Knockoff when you can have the real deal? :lol

Incredible album, deserved nominations. They'll win at least two.

Did you read the definition? Both those bands established their public identity with their last albums.

Anyway, go Fall Out Boy (fuck the haters)!

Even though Funeral is a much better album than Plans, I want Death Cab to win a Grammy. Arcade Fire can win for Cold Wind.*

*Not that the Grammys mean anything or have any impact on my life whatsoever.

Funeral came out in September 2004, as I remember buying it the day it came out. The Grammy's state that to be eligible an album must be released between Oct 04 and Oct 05... how did Funeral qualify?

Fountains of Wayne was nominated for Best New Artist for the 2003 Grammys :-S

I know about that, but this is different. As messed up as having Fountains of Wayne nominated for best new artist after they'd been around for 7-8 years, at least the album came out during the time period of eligibility. Funeral was released prior to the eligibilty date.

Bolded what should win, but probably wouldn't. In Best Male Country Vocal Performance you have four that could walk away with it. Keith Urban is so poppy that he'll probably get it even though Willie Nelson or Toby Keith deserve it more. Sugarland's album also deserved a nod for Best Album and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

I do not know the answer to this question. However, since it's Funeral, I also don't care what rules were broken. Go Funeral!

Again, the definition of a "new" artist.

(For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)

You may have been listening to Fountains of Wayne for eight years but the truth of the matter is that 99% of people haven't been. Welcome Interstate Managers was their breakout album and established their public identity. The same is true of Modest Mouse and Good News for People Who Love Bad News

From Under the Cork Tree is Fall Out Boy's third album (Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend and Take This to Your Grave being the first two), but it was Cork Tree that established them in the market.

Now, the fact that an album can be nominated for Best New Artist when it was released outside the eligibility period is another argument all together, and I agree that an album shouldn't be nominated if it's released in Sept and the eligibility period starts in Oct.

My guess for winners:

Category 1 - Record Of The Year

• Gold Digger
Kanye West
Jon Brion & Kanye West, producers; Tom Biller, Andrew Dawson, Mike Dean &
Anthony Kilhofer, engineers/mixers
Track from: Late Registration
[Roc-A-Fella]

Category 2 - Album Of The Year (Nominated out of nowhere = grammys give Paul a blowjob)

• Chaos And Creation In The Backyard
Paul McCartney
Nigel Godrich, producer; Darrell Thorp, engineer/mixer; Alan Yoshida, mastering
engineer
[Capitol Records]

Category 3 - Song Of The Year

Honestly, I have no clue.

Category 4 - Best New Artist
(For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)

I think it will be either Keane or John Legend, but I really want Fall Out Boy to win.

Category 16 - Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
(For duo, group or collaborative performances, with vocals. Singles or Tracks only.)

• All These Things That I've Done
The Killers
Track from: Hot Fuss
[Island Records]

Category 20 - Best Rock Song
(A Songwriter(s) Award. Includes Rock, Hard Rock & Metal songs. For Song Eligibility Guidelines see Category #3. (Artist names appear in parenthesis.) Singles or Tracks only.)

• Best Of You
Foo Fighters, songwriters (Foo Fighters)
Track from: In Your Honor
[RCA Records; Publishers: M.J.-Twelve Music, I Love The Punk Rock Music, Living Under A Rock Music, Flying Earform Music.]

Category 21 - Best Rock Album
(Vocal or Instrumental. Includes Hard Rock and Metal.)

• How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
U2
[Interscope Records]

Category 22 - Best Alternative Music Album
(Vocal or Instrumental.)

• Get Behind Me Satan
The White Stripes
[Third Man/V2 Records]

Though I would like Franz Ferdinand to win, I don't think the album is strong enough.

Category 35 - Best Rap Album
(For albums containing 51% or more playing time of VOCAL tracks.)

• Late Registration
Kanye West
[Roc A Fella]

Do they really need to nominate anybody else? The man is a force to be reckoned with.

Yeah, I really don't understand how Funeral got nominated. I'm not complaining...I'm actually really pleased, even though these awards are hardly indicitive of quality.

The grammy's make me think of SpikeTV's videogame awards.

Man, looking at that giant list above made me realize just how out-of-touch I am with mainstream music. Maybe that's a good thing, based on some of the category nominees.

Looking at the Record of the Year category, though...

Memles said:

I think if this were for videos, it'd probably go to Green Day, since it's pretty powerful, and gave me a new perspective on the song. Politically relevant right now, too.

As much as I would love for Gorillaz to win (Feel Good Inc. was one of the catchiest songs earlier this year, and I love Blur & De La Soul), I think Kanye West is going to clean up, so Gold Digger seems like the obvious choice here.

Amazingly, I'm not sick of that song yet, either... but if I hear another song from that Killers album again (especially after that 360 MTV POS special), something's gonna get destroyed. :lol

Eh, Clapton's only nominated for one.

His new album isn't that good, though, so I doubt he should be nominated for more.
