$500 cans on, this is how you dream right - Official Headphone Thread

For those looking new cans, it might not be a bad idea to hold off till Black Friday (week). I'm trying failing to go cold turkey on headphone buying, but that doesn't mean everyone else should too.

Does anyone regularly do good headphone deals on BF though?

What AKGs have you listened to? Some are poor but inoffensive, but many are actually quite good.

Might pick up a pair of Tiestos to testo.
K240 Studio. Every damn recording studio seems to have either them or Sony MDR-7506s and I'll take the Sonys over those any day. I also recall hearing some other open back ones too. I think my hate for open back headphones is pretty much the fault of AKG.

Wow. I have never been a huge believer in cables, but that's changed. Hifiman replaced my HE-300's broken black Canare cable with the new silver ones, and the difference is drastic. So freaking bright now, and the bass has lost its booming body. I know I haven't adjusted, but it sounds like total shit to me right now.

Did some looking around, and at least this Headphonia writer agrees with me:
The silver cable is built beautifully, though finished with a pretty standard molded plastic connector at the end. The sound is clearly silver. Bright, thin, dry silver. It’s brighter and thinner than the HE-6 original cable (the braided gold color cable), and it’s much brighter than the standard HE-500 original cable (the black Canare). Silver has their fans, but I’m never a big fan of silver. In fact, in this case the black Canare of the HE-500 remains my favorite cable for the Hifiman headphones (It is my favorite cable for the LCD-2 too).

I'm going to need to find a pair of the original cables, if I'm ever to enjoy these again. Hopefully someone at their headquarters has some stuffed in a drawer and they're willing to sell for a reasonable price.

So, one of the cables is bullshitting. And by that I mean intentionally distorts the signal. We are talking about the fuckin FR here.
Believe me, studios, mics, recordimg equipment... the frikkin voice coil of your headphone. ALL copper. A regular neutral cable simply can not bring anything to the signal.

How are the Sony XBA1IP?

My futureshop has them for $39.99 (Down from 99.99) and I'm in the marked for new IEM's. Should I do it? Price ends tomorrow!

Basic needs for IEM: Noise Isolation/No Leakage, Decent Bass (listen to basically any music except metal)

[edit] I bought it, (AKA Secret Santa don't buy these :p)

IF YOU DON'T THINK MONSTER CABLES ARE THE BEST AND TURN YOUR CASSETTES IN TO 192/24 THEN YOU'RE PRETENTIOUS

Gaf need some help

My Numark Red Wave's detachable cable is going bad. getting static and what not. Turns out others had that problem and needed to get a replacement cable through customer support...which is not available till Monday.

So can anyone recommend a really thin male to male cable or one that will actually snap onto the numark's like the one it came with?

I found a basic male to male lying around but it wouldnt fit. I can buy the actual numark replacement cable but it costs 22 bucks. Trying to avoid that option. I really would like a backup cable that will fit on these phones even after i get my replacement in.

I just wanna say...

Numark has great customer service :)

Cable was free, all i needed to do was printscreen my sales order and email it back to the guy on the line.

Guys? Bone conduction headphones? What's the best around for less than 60$?

I hate IEMs and honestly using headphones like my Porta Pros for excercizing would eventually render them a stinky mess, so I'd like to try using some bone ones, mainly due to the fact that you can still hear your surroundings so well, I usually bike through some busy areas...

Bumpetty bump. Please help?

Haven't much experience with them aside from reports of migraines etc.

What have you against IEMs? Dislike excessive ear canal penetration? Need less isolation? Earbuds or half-in ears are the way to go.

If you're interested in a rec, let us know your budget or check the pretty thorough OP.

Question bump:

I'm looking at a pair of these Kinivo BTH220's for a pair of good sounding everyday headphones. They're inexpensive and the amazon reviews look okay, but they're amazon reviews so...::shrugs:: Does anyone have any hands on experience with them?

May not be the best place to ask but do you guys have any recommendations for surround gaming headphones/headsets?

Sounds like he's planning on using them for exercising? The cable noise from iems would drive him loony I'd think. I'd recommend a pair of KSC-75s or some other cheap phone that hooks over the ears. The KSC-35s share the same driver as the portapros, and if you can find them, they can be easily modified for better SQ. I think bone conducting ones would need to be stable to transmit the vibrations, I'm not sure how they'd perform with constant jostling

I wouldn't recommend "surround" sound gaming sets to be honest. They don't really offer better imaging and placement than comparably priced sets

What I don't like about IEMs is the fact that my own body's sounds completely drown out the music. My heartbeat, the steps I take, everything is a massive boom happening in my hears. The ONLY ocasion where I do like IEMs is on airplanes, because of the isolation. But that's not the point here...

I wear earbuds, it's not enough, I need something that just completely lets in outside noises and doesn't drown them at all. I would buy some over the head ones, but since I'll be using them for excercising, they'd be ruined. Besides, isn't that exactly the purpose of bone conducting headphones? Plus, my car's stereo has horrible sound, and Bone conducters would help remedy that.

When there's a good sale on one of the recommended pairs of headphones, do people usually post about it in here?

So I'm looking for a "decent" set of earbuds or headphones. I'm concerned with best bang for my buck. I am looking for the 30-50 dollar range so I'm not expecting miracles but at least a step up since I usually buy ten dollar earbuds and run through a few pairs a year. I'm going to mostly be using them in the gym so I would prefer earbuds but if the quality between headphones and earbuds is that big I don't mind wearing the headphones at the gym. If it matters my music player is a lumia 920 (phone). Thanks in advance!

Earbuds specifically, and not IEMs?

Thanks Des for the Brainwavz M5 recommendation! My pair ($45 on Amazon) came in today and they sound great. Definitely on par with (if not better than) my Klipsch S4's that are double the price.

Heck of a thread you guys have here.

Question:
My 13 year old daughter would like to get her first set of serious headphones.
She travels a lot with them. So they need to be sturdy.
She's a girl, so they need to be stylish.
She's a teenager so they need to be cheap but good.
She's run through 3 sets of earbuds in a year.
She really wants a pair of headphones that are easy to stow that are very durable and has good sound quality.

Help me gaf!

Do they need to be closed?

I've narrowed my choice to either Sony MDR V6 or Audio Technica M50. $68 vs $113 on amazon, help me pick one out guys.

I'm looking for a pair of headphones. I'm willing to spend around $100-$200 but the cheaper the better. I mostly listen to punk and alt rock, metal, and some electronica, and will be listening primarily on my iPhone 5 (although a remote would be nice, sound and comfort are far more important.)

I'm not sure if open or closed would be better. I will be traveling a lot in the spring, so comfort and durability is important. Been using Sony MDR-V700 and they hurt after like 5 minutes. (It would be an added bonus if they include a hard case or there is something I could buy to use as one) I'm open to any suggestions, thanks!

Edit: Looking at the v•moda m80's possibly

Hey what's the sound signature for the HD598's. Is it more of a V shape like other Sennheiser stuff?

Edit: Looking at the v•moda m80's possibly

The M80's are built like a tank, but they're just fairly comfortable. Some people don't like on ears, and some people complain of too much clamping. But I have a large head, and after a little molding of the headband, they're great.

I'd grab the AKG K167

No no, it's definitely slightly warm, but much closer to being flat.

Feels bad, man. I'm still waiting for my RE0s thanks to Sandy screwing up USPS mail delivery on the east coast.

I'm debating being dumb and blowing $50-70 on another pair of IEMs while I wait for that mess to sort itself out. Does anyone have recommendations? These'll get a lot of Eurobeat/eurodance/dance-pop pumped through 'em, synths and vocals aplenty, so I'm curious as to what would be recommended. I'm thinking maybe the Brainwavz M5 (or the M4)?

Sigh, my dad asked my mom who asked me for headphone suggestions. He wants active noise canceling though, I'm just going to tell her Bose Quietcomforts.

Has anyone here tried the Sony MDR-NC60 headphones? I have them currently, but they're the only pair I've ever owned so I don't know how good or bad they are relative to other headphones. I want better headphones, but I also don't want to spend more than $200, so essentially I want to know if $150-$200 headphones are significantly better than the MDR-NC60s.
I Googled for audiophile reviews of the MDR-NC60s, but I couldn't really find anything.

I'm looking for good headphones for ~$90-100, but every one I look at it seems like comfort is an issue. Do comfortable headphones exist at this price point? :p

Ok, open headphone advice time.

So I am really happy with my ATH-M50s, but have been thinking about getting a set of open headphones to complement them for home use and, well, why the hell not?

I am looking to spend a similar amount
I am not brand loyal
Looks are not an issue
Music will vary, but will be mainly metal and rock. Some electronic.
I will probably use them for movies and tv too.

You guys came through perfectly last time, don't disappoint me headphone-gaf

I want to get my little brother some headphones for Christmas so he can stop stealing mine, can't afford a lot right now max budget of around $100. He likes closed ear, and he listens to a lot of bass, so something with good bass is important. Suggestions?

I need some IEM advice.

I'm looking for a new pair to replace my old $40 ones. I want these to last a while so sturdy construction/materials are a must. I'm willing to spend around $150.
I'll be using them to listen to a variety of different genres, but in general I don't care too much about bass as long as the sound is crystal clear.

I'm currently eying the MEElectronics A161p but they look pretty flimsy.

Would this be stylish enough?
It's sturdy and foldable too.
