I need some IEM advice.

I'm looking for a new pair to replace my old $40 ones. I want these to last a while so sturdy construction/materials are a must. I'm willing to spend around $150.
I'll be using them to listen to a variety of different genres, but in general I don't care too much about bass as long as the sound is crystal clear.

I'm currently eying the MEElectronics A161p but they look pretty flimsy.
They arent flimsy and are really clear, about on par with the RE0 but better built

I have Shure SRH440 headphone for some time and use it every now and then, it sounds great to me, but lately, I've been bothered by the weight in my head, and the closed nature of it made my ear hot and sweaty after prolonged use.

I'm thinking maybe to get a comparable or better headphone than SRH440, but this time pay more attention to the weight and comfort, maybe an open air headphone to as opposed to closed one.

any suggestion? I think I can go up to around $100-$150, maybe even a little bit more if the value proposition is good.

What sound card would you guys recommend for someone with a 5.1 reciever, a Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro and Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones? I'm looking to build a Home theater/Gaming PC and I'm putting all the finishing touches on my list.

Not yet. I'm planning on putting together a home hifi setup within the next few months though for vinyl and digital media

Would recommend you look at getting a good Amp first, perhaps a DAC/Amp combo? There's a lot more you can get out of your M-50s and most good open headphones all-but-require a competent headphone amp.

With that covered, the best bang for your buck open headphones in the low-to-mid tier price range are;
Audio-Technica ATH-AD900s (look for second hand or refurbished between $150-170)
Hifiman HE-400s (obviously the better option, but you'll probably need at least $300 for them used)

Either would make good choices, though the latter certainly much more-so (and indeed, it can compete on a very high level). First you should work on your system IMO.

EDIT: Alternatively there's always Grados, but it sounds like you need something with more bass presence.

So the last advice I got in this thread was great, I love my Superlux. I'm now looking at getting something portable. I have a decent pair of IEH but they don't stay in place at all, which is something I've noticed with IEH on me. So either earbuds or folding headphones are my options. Should I just go for the Yuin PK3, or are there any folding ones people would recommend? I don't have enough room in my backpack for anything real big, and I'm mostly concerned with lifespan. If the PK3 really lasts 2+ years, then I have no reason not to go with those really.

Don't get the PK3. I've had them and they broke in a couple weeks. And there's lots more stories of them breaking super easily.

For under 50 dollar earbuds, I recommend the hisound audio PAA-1 Pro or the Apple earpods. Both of these options sound better than the PK3

the PAA-1 pro have more bass, a bigger soundstage but some harshness with the upper mids. The earpods are smoother but have less bass quantity than the PAA-1 pro.

What would be best pair of over the head headphones for $50 range??

I will be using them mainly for watching movies on laptop, and occasional music use.

Right now I am looking at Sennheiser HD201

Thanks man, I think it is time to visit some stores and do some research.

Hello friends,

Looking for a recommendation.

Budget of $100. Looking for IEM's. Mainly listen to electronic music ( deep dub, IDM )

My top choice so far is Shure SE215 or the XEARS XE200PRO...that walnut is so sexy. Just checking to see wether there is something ele out there that is better. Or which one between these two.

Thanks!

Well the two that you mentioned are good as well so if they're cheaper then go with them. I'd steer you more towards the Shure unless you're a complete basshead.

Just found the Thinksound on their own store for $99 :D !!

I think I will go with them. Reviews seem solid, and they are gorgeous.

Thanks a lot!

That's surprising, the amazon reviews mentioned longevity and the cord looks a lot sturdier than I'm used to seeing. I'll take a look at the hisounds, since I listen to bass-heavy stuff more often than not. Thanks!

Edit: Other reviews on other sellers of the PK3 did complain about longevity, didn't see that at first. The hisounds look nice but not sure I'm willing to spend $50 at this point on earbuds. May just buy some cheap junk online to get me buy for the rest of college :p

Stay away from the PK3. I've had 5 break on me.

If you want a yuin earbud that's built better, take a look at the OK3.

Of course i would really recommend a decent IEM over any ear bud anyhow - they're just not as capable. The best purchase of the year has been my brainwavz beta for a whopping $13.

I Just bought some earpods from a coworker for 20 bucks. He got an iphone 5 and hadnt even taken them out of the case. Design seems a lot better than the last decade of generic whites from apple. Bass is deeper. The clicker seems to be the biggest improvement. I'm on record stating that I think the clicker should have remained without the volume buttons like the first generation iphone clicker, but they seem to finally have gotten the more complex design right. Most interestingly they have done away with the pinhole for the mic and now the entire thing is enclosed in plastic which should help longevity by reducing SWEAT interference.

Good redesign.

Hey guys, I'm looking for some good noise-cancelling headphones for a tournament environment. I'm flying out to compete at NEC (fighting game tournament) in Philly in a couple weeks :)

Price range is ideally <$200

Any suggestions?

Logitech UE6000s are some of the best sealed headphones in the price range and have a noise cancelling option. When you don't need as much isolation, you can switch off the noise cancelling and the sound quality is even more impressive. I highly recommend them.

Here's a review, to help you make up your mind.

Best of luck in the tourney, let us know what phones you decide on and how you do.

Might want to see if madcatz is supplying headsets first. They have done that lately with larger tournaments.

Unless you need them for music...

I just didn't like the cut of their jib, basically. For the price it didn't seem like I would be getting much more than a normal set of earbuds with controls I can't use for ~$20 more. If I could try them in person it might change my mind, but sadly earbud-ish shopping around here is online or $5 generic ones from the store. It also looked like the form factor could be an issue with my ears (since I already have so much trouble with ear-anythings). Again though, couldn't be sure just from online, so just decided not to risk it.

Think I'm actually going to sacrifice quality a bit and get some over-the-ear clip-ons, Sony or otherwise. I KNOW those will work for me, and since I need to hear around me anyway, sound quality isn't the highest priority. Just have to see which is most durable.

Looking at the reviews for some of them, see lots of complaining about not being able to use IEH, so guess I'm not alone :p

Have you tried koss ksc75? Very well respected clip ons (I've bought at least 5 for myself and others) for an amazing price.

Kipp

but I am taking tiny steps forward
So what is it that affects the piercing quality of headphones? For example, when the sound is pretty harsh and gives me a bit of a headache.
For example, to avoid this (my current headphones do this to me) what qualities should I look for? Open vs. closed? A warmer sound?

You'll want something headphones that are generally called warm or dark. Stay away from anything bright.

Stick to more bass/mid focused headphones.

Open and closed shouldn't matter in this scenario.

All right, cool. Thanks!
Are warm and dark synonymous? I haven't seen the term "dark" before.

you want to avoid treble peaks (frequency response) and ringing (seen on waterfall plots). You generally want to look for a warmer sound

treble peaks can be seen in frequency response charts. sharp peaks above 5K will have piercing treble. peaks at 2K will make some female vocals sound like they're shouting into your ear.

a good resource for this is headroom. they have charts for lots of headphones. look at the Grado RS1 from their listings.

peaks at 2K, 5K and 9K

T8DDU.png

that will give you glare with female vocals (2K), sibilance with cymbals (5K) and the 9K is mostly inaudible.

Now look at a headphone with no treble peaks. The Sennheiser HD650:

Yd2ch.png

now, making things even worse, if you look at how the headphones react over time, you can see that some of those frequencies "ring" or remain audible for a longer period of time than other frequencies. this can result in even greater harshness. these charts are like the frequency response above but stretched out over time from back to front. (perfect response would be a flat surface at t= 0ms)

Here's that HD650 again: not bad

OAdw1.jpg

and the RS1

RyE3V.jpg

you can see that the 5K peak also decays slowly on the RS1 and can create resonances and make the peak sound even more harsh than if it were a short duration peak.

TL; DR: look for frequency charts at headroom as they have them for lots of popular headphones. look for headphones that have a slow, steady reduction in FR from 1kHz down to 5 kHz with no peaks. when reading impressions and reviews, look for "warm sounding" cans

Well i'm back to this thread, still on the search for my first "real" headphones. Considering the following:

Sony MDR-V6
Sony MDR-7506
Audio Technica ATH-M50
V-Moda M-100
V-Moda M-80
Aiaiai TMA-1

Help me decide please! I know the price range is very wide, but as long as its not over 300, I can shell out some money. I'm looking for a combination of portability and sound quality.

The price range and the sound range. You have monitor headphones with the MDR-V6/7506/ATH-M50's and then you go right into the bass heavy options with the V-Moda's and TMA-1s.

I want something for listening to music, mostly [prog] rock/metal. I commute to school in NYC, so I would prefer something with portability. What would you suggest I start off with?

Would you guys have any suggestions for gaming headphones?

I made a trip to my local futureshop and best buy yesterday just to have a look at what they had in the headphones departement. I tried a bunch of different Turtle beach and I don't know, I thought they all sounded kinda average to me. I like the fact that some of them supported surround sound and had an optical input (directly from your console or blu ray player) but that's about it. I tried the most expensive X42 (160$) and yeah, sound definition in general was just average, the lows were practically non-exitant, outside sound suppression (or whatever it's called) was also non-existant.

Then, just out of curiosity, I tried a few non-gaming headphones. They had a Beats PRO and Bose quiet comfort 15 for people to try. HOLY CRAP. The sound quality was worlds better. I've looked around online a little. I know that most Beats and Bose headphones have the reputation of being all style and no substance. The Beats especially. I was surprised at the amount of hate they receive in online forums. But they really sounded awesome to me. WAAAAY better then the X42, it wasn't even close. The problem with the Beats and the Bose for me is that they don't have an optical input. A salesman told me that I didn't really need an optical in because I could simply plug any high quality headphones into my TV. The problem is that my TV doesn't have a standard headphones connection. Weird I know. It's an HDTV from 2008. Lots of input, pretty decent TV in general, no headphones connection. So I need to have an optical input.

One more thing I should point out is that I would rather not have those headphones with tons of game specific features like those Call of duty headsets. They probably cost more and the features are ones that I won't use since I don't play a lot of online games. I mean if they have incredible sound quality I will consider them of course but I would rather stay from them.

So this is what I need.
- optical input
- wired if possible
- highest sound quality possible
- no unnecessary features

I don't even know if such a thing exists. I googled a bit but couldn't find anything that
interested me. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

The best portable headphones for rock/metal under $300 are Sennheiser Amperiors IMO. If that breaks the budget a bit too much though the Sennheiser HD25-1 II would make a good substitute. Both have sound signatures made for rock and are built like a tank.

For a portable headphone that plays all genres equally well in the price range, then you'll want a V-Moda M-80.
