Oh fuck I got you confused with the other guy looking for gaming headphones...I was on my phone, super sorry. The COP would be a good choice, though their isolation isn't quite as good as my first recommendations.

I see, its cool by the way.

Between the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro,Logitech UE 6000, and the KRK KNS8400 I have a few choices. I'll keep ya posted on what I buy

Don't you guys love it when you've had headphones for a while and you randomly fall in love with them all over again? It happens every couple of weeks for me. I'll be listening to something and suddenly realize how great everything truly sounds.

I walked into a local music store to try out some headphones. After a bunch of deliberation/time wasting, I decided to pick up the KRK KNS8400. It doesn't fold up but the ear pads can be rotated so that made it a little bit more portable than other options on my shortlist.

Random thoughts on other headphones I was interested in...

K81DJ: The headband has a vise grip. How does anybody wear this?

K271/240 mkii: Pretty comfy; supposedly they come with velvet earpads too but I didn't go bust open a box and swap the cushions. I like the sound but eventually chose the KNS8400 over these just because they are a bit easier to take with me.

ATH-M50: Maybe I'm too used to not having a lot of bass. They work okay for some stuff, but it was distracting when I tried a pop song and the bass guitar was as loud as the female vocalist.

DT770/990: I've read that these really benefit from an amp so I have no idea how different they would sound from my iPhone test. But the cushions are still nice. :)

SRH840: If they weren't noticeably heavier, I might have spent more time comparing these against the K271/KNS8400.

The Soundmagic HP100 are the most comfortable portable closed cans I found, but you made a good pick. Those KRK's are super analytical and present top-notch clarity, if you're willing to sacrifice a little fun.

Wow, the AKG K-550 has really fallen in price. Now available for just €185. Could not pass this up, especially with the 30 day refumd period on Thomann.
That will be sweeeet with my Sansa Clip :)

I am still considering the MadDogs but... I really want a portable amp and dac with those which would mean almost €500 which I currently just don't have.

Ok, so I have narrowed down two two pairs of headphones that I am going to purchase. For my hip hop and trance music listening, I am goin to go with the ATH-M50 headset and for my classical music and rock music I am going to go with a pair of Senn 598's. is there any reason that I shouldn't go with these two particular sets of headphones?

If you have the money to burn I think it's better to just go with a higher end set that is able to handle both genres adequately. Mr. Speaker Mad Dog's and a good amp, or Hifiman HE-400 and a good amp. The AKG Q701 might also be a contender.

The reason I was looking at two pairs as opposed to something like the AKG's was due to the sound isolation, I had forgot to mention that. So one pair was for home use and the other for when I was out and about. Is there anything comparable the AKG's better soundstage that would be closed and have good isolation? I'll still have to look into those Mad Dog's.

My Sennheiser cx-500 are dying and it seems like they aren't being made anymore.
What IEMs in the same price range (60€) should I look at? I like the bassy sound of the cx-500 and I'd like something with a similar sound.

M5 aren't better than M4, more of a mid-centric sidegrade. M5 was more mass-produced. Sorry about that link to the Dunu DN18, fixed. I'd actually steer you more towards those than either given the great build quality.

Leaning towards the Dunu DN18 right now. I listen to a lot of metal and punk, would they be the better choice for that?
Thanks for all your help.

I'm looking for another set of cans for either work or home.

Right now I have Beyerdynamic 770s and Ultrasone Proline 650s. I'm not a big fan of the ultrasones: never a huge fan of their sound, leak too much noise for work purposes, and feel kind of bad.

I love my 770s, so I could steal them from home unless I can replace them with a better set.

How are the MadDogs in comparison with the 770s? Any other recommendations for an upgrade from the 770s. <400$ is my range, though 250-300$ is my target.

Also, I recommend the Miles Davis Trumpet IEMs if someone can get them cheaply. Those buds are amazing. Much better than the triple-fis I owned. Different from the ER4Ps I had, but both are excellent. IIRC, the Trumpets have a lifetime warrenty, which is pretty nice for IEMs.

Hello gents, bit of a noobie question here. I've had my Sony MDRv-6 for a few years now and I love it, sounds great. But I don't have a DAC/Amp. Is it worth it to get one with these headphones? I was looking at the FiiO E17, but might just go with the E10 to save myself a c-note. With the E17 I could use the S/PDIF input from my soundcard, but is that any better/worse than using the USB?

I use my headphones most when gaming or listening to music on my PC, I've just got them plugged right into the machine right now. I also use them a bit when listening on my phone (GSIII)

Bought some cheap JVC HAS140B headphones for $12 earlier today. Satisfied so far, they're fairly comfortable and sound good enough for the price. Works fine for listening to music or audiobooks at work.

Hey Headphone-GAF, what are my best options for ear buds in the $75-$150 range? I mainly listen to hip hop, and they'll be paired with a rMBP.

Both would be good, but yes the mid-range of the DN-18 is a bit clearer.

Welp, I finally decided on a purchase: the KRK KNS8400

THe detail retrieval of those is incredible, and if you're okay with an extremely neutral sounding set then you're in for a really great set.

You'd definitely want to get the Mad Dogs with Dog Pads if you're looking for an upgrade to the 770s otherwise you'd really miss that great mid-bass thump. Considering that the Mad Dogs would also have to be amped quite properly, I'd also consider the V-Moda M100. If you want to keep things cheap the AKG K167 and M-Audio Q40 (when amped) both sound a bit better than DT770s IMO.

I'd go with either the Hisoundaudio Crystal, Audeo Perfect Bass, or AtrioX MG5.

looking to replace my sony mdr ex500lp. something similar or better in the same price range, comfort is most important, and usually listen to vocal song. any suggestions?

what does people mean when they said it have neutral sound? I have Sony IEM that I really like, but often read that Sony iem usually have neutral sound and not sure what that mean.

I should have said flat. Neutral is more generic. It usually implies a rather balanced sound in which none of the ranges really overpower the spectrum, and the mid-range is allowed to excel.

I just found out that the Sennheiser cx-400 II are rebranded cx-500.
Now I'm not sure which to get. I can get the cx-400 II tomorrow but the Duna DN 18 will probably take a week or more to get here. Has anyone here tried both of them? How do they compare?

Well, damn. Gonna return these because these headband pads cause some uncomfortable pressure on one spot of my head after ~30 minutes. Didn't really suspect anything while I was trying them at the store. Might have been better if the material used there was similar to the ear cushions, or if they actually had a cushion spanning the whole headband instead of two pads with a gap left in between.

So I went over my budget a bit by picking up the AKG K550 as a replacement. Maybe when I'm less poor later I'll look into something for more bass-focused music.

GAF, whilst currently being sat at work on my own (snow, heh) I realise just how much more productive I am when it's just me, my code and some music playing in the background (yes, I'm technically procrastinating now, but this is the first time for hours which is a record for me)

So yeah, I think I have serious attention issues - can anyone please recommend some reasonably priced headphones that will absolutely block out all noises from the outside, and preferably will keep the audio in also - ie everyone won't be able to hear how awful my music taste is if I play it loudly :D

I'm tempted by the Sennheiser HD-202s, but they're huge! http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003LPTAYI/

Well, for your task, most closed phones should do. May I ask, what is your definition of reasonably priced though? $20 is pretty cheap, maybe add a few bucks to the budget for improvements?

Well, after a bit of deliberation I pulled the trigger and picked up...

Hifiman HE-500
Schiit Asgard
Schiit Bifrost

... to use for Music / Gaming on my PC. Oh God what have I done. :p

I think it's finally time to invest in a good pair of headphones instead of buying those $20-$50 earbuds for them to only die in 1-4 months(one of the buds die or I keep damaging the wires).

I mainly want a pair for studying purposes/commuting on the bus. Thus noise cancellation is ideal but I never experience one before and I heard that the sound is usually sacrificed. I also would like something that's portable thus why I always get earbuds since I can just put it in my pocket. However, I'm thinking about going to headphones. I would really like something that can last me more than 4 months. Budget: Around a $100. If it'll last me more than a year, I might be willing to go from $100-200. But no more than $200.

Something you won't regret. BTW I have an Asgard and those things get hot. I think they said the casing itself is designed to be the heatsink, so it's supposed to do that. Just be aware of that.

You could always order straight from the source. Although they seem to be backordered until the first week of February now.

edit: Just realized you were using amazon credit... ignore me then. :p

OK, dumb question:

What makes a set of "studio monitor" headphones different than a normal set?

I'm looking for a comfortable set of closed ear headphones for listening with an iphone or ipod classic: Looking in the $100 ish range

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50's grabbed my attention thus far. Other suggestions?

musically I tend towards ambient, drone, etc. Music like this:

Quick question. I'm thinking of getting a pair of sennheiser momentum or vmoda m100 cans. I'm excited to listen to my favorite albums with some real headphones, but will these be ok to listen to other things as well? They will always be in my backpack, would they sound good for movies as well as gaming?

but I am taking tiny steps forward

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure it's just a term used for closed, around the ear headphones.

For movies and gaming I think most people find bass impact/quantity to be fairly important, and specifically for FPS gaming, a wide soundstage. Those will both be just fine for gaming/movies.
