$500 cans on, this is how you dream right - Official Headphone Thread

Actually ended up liking the stock tips the best out of what came with the set. I have smaller/mid sized ears though so I didn't need the big tips. The case is nice, but I can see it being a pain in the arse to get them in their and wrapped up correctly in a hurry.

About to go lay down and hit the bed and try them out. I got 2 albums I want to listen to on my phone, and I'm using Cyanongen with it's built in DSP Manager. I'll see how this all goes.

Best in-ear headphones for less than say, $60? Probably looking more for the $40 maximum price range. Need to replace a pair of Sony ones I had which are getting kind of janky. I think it was this model: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDREX58V-BLK-Earbud-Headphones/dp/B004RE3YU8/ref=sr_1_22?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1357728359&sr=1-22&keywords=earbuds

Just got a new iPhone 5 which came with the Earpods, and while alright (and better than the previous Apple earbuds), they're not as good as the Sony ones I currently have.

I want to invest in a nicer pair of headphones at some point, but I keep buying cheaper earbuds as a stopgap (besides being more portable) until I have the spare cash for something in the $150-$250 range. Looking at the Astro A40s for that since I need a headset too and the removable mic boom is really nice for just listening to stuff. Would rather that route than get nice headphones and a separate desktop mic, as I haven't found any of those I like.

I had a nice Sennheiser set I liked, but the coating on the plug got partially stripped away, so it only plays sound out of one side unless you align it just right. Don't think there's anyway to fix that.

So I ended up getting some of those monoprice 8320's to try out and damn. I have no complaints, especially for the 9 bucks I paid for em. I have a nice pair of headphones but I try and stay away from spending too much on earphones as I tend to go through them like crazy. I'm sure they'll start to sound a bit better with some burn in too.

Hey GAF,

My latest pair of Sennheiser CX300IIs just died, so I'm in the market for some closed headphones in the $100-$200 region for using on the go. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD595s which I use at home, but they're open and the cable's unwieldy to use outside.

Looking for some nice looking, comfy ones that can house a couple of big ears.

Ta in advance.

Cheers HiResDes. The AKG K167s sound good to me; can anyone with larger ears confirm they fit alright? I'm in Japan and nowhere around me have these in stock to try on, so I'll be ordering them online.

I pick up my HE-300s and the right can has that blown speaker sound, just out of the freaking blue. They'r'e just sitting there safe, no drops or anything.

Feels really bad.

And I was hyped because I just got a FiiO E17. I'm a little surprised by how clearly superior the sound signature is to the E10. Plus the treble control is brilliant. Like wow.

The TMA-1s sound so good with it.

Perfect. That means that their planned obsolescence is working. Sounds like an RE 400/600 is in your future.

Where in Japan do you live? If you're near Tokyo, check out the giant Yodobashi Camera by Akihabara Station. One floor has a whole section devoted to headphones. You can demo a whole bunch of them; I even got to try the HD800 there. I was there last week, but didn't check to see if the K167s were in stock. There's also a headphone store nearby Nakano station with a good used selection as well.

Has anyone tried the Dr. DAC2 DX?

Headfonia has a comprehensive review on it.

I managed to find a good sale a few months ago and have been using it to drive my AKG K601s. I've been really enjoying it, adds a nice bit of warmth to the sound. sogood.gif

Are the Sen 595's still worth a damn these days? I have been thinking of pulling the trigger on then for at least two years now and I think I'm finally ready to retire my old Sony's.

Hey headphone gaf, gaffer who knows nothing about headphones, writing this following a few hours of reading up. Building a m-itx pc system in march, and thus no soundcard. Looking for a good sound solution (and new headphones as a result), is something like the ultrasone proline 550 + a FiiO e17 DAC along the right lines, or is that way off being a good set-up for gaming. I listen to barely any music really, and no need for a mic, so I really am just looking for the best sound solution for sitting playing games in my spare time.

EDIT: More reading, and perhaps AKG K550s & the e10? Again, just for gaming

I'm on a search for new headphones and I need some advice. Currently I have the Bose AE 2 headphone and while I do enjoy them, I want something that has more strength in noise-canceling and isolation while not sacificing sound. Although I'm on a budget, I would take any suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

EDIT:
Guess I should say that ideal price range would be $130-150.

I can't wait until those new ATH-AD900X headphones come out here in North America. Those things are so being bought. I hope they are around $200.

Just picked up a pair of V-moda M-100's. It's my first real foray into getting some serious cans. Really digging it so far. Great depth of sound.

The UE6000 are the best value, but you're going to have to spend about $50 more for them. If you just want a really cheap passive noise canceling option, and don't care about looks check out the R-Shields (You ain't hearing shit in those bad boys)

Anybody in the market for a FiiO L9 L-Shaped LOD cable for iPods and iPhones? No use for it any more with the iPhone 5. Figure I can ship anywhere in NA for cheap if I just throw it an envelope and ship as a letter.

Would an iPhone 5 have any problem driving the UE6000's?

Thanks for getting back to me.Should I worry/care about dolby headphone or anything like that? I saw some sources recommend the xonar u3 to get the virtual surround sound stuff, some saying that a pair of really good headphones and a decent DAC would negate the need anyway since the'd have good positional audio anyway.

Virtual surround sound is kinda sketchy...I'd rather have a pair of regular headphones with good soundstage and a decent amp. If you can afford the Astro Mixamp that might push them a bit further.

Is there a reason why Sennheiser cables are so ridiculously long? Always wondered who needs 6 whole feet, especially since they seem to be for the average consumer.

I'll look into those, by the way I also came across two other set of headphones and wonder how would those compare to the Bose I have and the ones you recommended in terms of what I'm looking for.

Again thank you for you time and advice.

Are you just picking out random headphones...KRK KNS6400 are fairly neutral, okay comfort, and provide decent isolation but probably not up to your expectations. The DT770's are comfortable as shit, and quite V-shaped in frequency, providing strong bass and treble, and quite recessed mids. The DT770's isolate pretty well, but there's still a bit of leakage. I'm not sure what Bose you have? If you have the Quiet Comforts then the DT770s are probably fairly close in sound spectrum to those. The UE6000 are better than any of these in terms of all-around capability.

If you're looking for another cheap well isolating headphone check out the Jaycars in the OP, but be warned that you might miss the mid-bass bloat of the Bose's especially with such a neutral set.

Could afford the mixamp no bother, would that be instead of or coupled with the E10?

about the same metal capacity as a cucumber
So the right channel of my S4is have kicked. Fuck.

Need some recommendations for commuting. Would prefer iPhone controls, but that's not a deal breaker. Need to isolate, so either smaller closed cans or IEMs.

I have the Bose AE2. The other headphones were recommended at head-fi

I like them more than HD650s.

Can you say more? Comparing JVC HA-S500 against Sennheiser HD 650?

The JVC looks closed back from the pictures, where the HD 650 is very very open.

I'm looking for some closed back on-ear headphones for travel. HD-25-I is my current (and default) choice, as I love Sennheiser headphones

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Anyone know if Soul by Ludacris is a good series? I'm at staples and they are all over 50% off. Looking at the SL99 and SL300s specifically.

After re-terminating the cable of my SR-80s 3 times, after which the connection would go out in a few months, I decided to just go all out and replace the whole cable. Starquad cable with paracord wrap is significantly lighter than the stock cable, which I'm hoping will prevent my previous problem. I have been without these for about 5 months due to laziness and forgot how amazing they can sound.

edit: Also, listening to the Bastion soundtrack, specifically something like "Build That Wall" is enough to remind you of everything that is amazing with Grados.

Thanks, I also have been looking at the Sennheiser HD 449 and have been wondering how would those compare with the AE2. Any opinions on those?

I wasn't a big fan of the 448's, and I found the soundstage to be rather unimpressive even for a closed-headphone. You were looking for headphones with a wide soundstage right? I'm not sure how different the 449's are...

I see then, oh and COP stands for custom one pro right? Looking at them now and I like when I see. Any personal feedback? Comfort and sound isolation in specific.

Oh fuck I got you confused with the other guy looking for gaming headphones...I was on my phone, super sorry. The COP would be a good choice, though their isolation isn't quite as good as my first recommendations.
