$500 cans on, this is how you dream right - Official Headphone Thread

^^ Oh damn, really. That complicates things. So through the PS4 with the astro amp would be fine by itself, but for the PC you're talking about a FiiO E10K ? I looked up the X1 and the only prices I could find were $450+ which is more than even getting the DT990pros and the E10 together, which I'm seeing listed at about a hundred bucks for the amp and $230 for the DTs.

I'm in Canada and I can't seem to find those for less than $350 (the cost of the 250 ohm version + the amp). There's one listed on ebay here :
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Ohms-Headband-Headphones-/371240894861?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item566fae818d
but the description says 250 ohm version, though it looks like the 32 ohm version to me so there's either 2 different looking 250 versions or the seller is wrong, and it will likely go up to around $200+ by the time the listing ends. Am I out of options ?

There's two different 250 Ohm headphones, one is the pro that comes with a coiled cable and tighter clamp, and the other is the Premium.

I'm gonna be able to buy a headset for maximum 150€ (Germany).
I have a rather smaller head and need comfy headphones to be able to enjoy them for longer sessions.
The headset should have a control for volume and headset (at least on/off).
Any recommendations?

Laughing hard right now:

Pono/Ayre choose not to publish certain specifications including the headphone amp output impedance because this has nothing to do with sound quality, according to Charles Hansen, Ayre's Founder and Designer (I prefer the shut up and listen approach as well). It turns out there was some misinformation that found its way to the web, stating this spec was 5 Ohms. While this was true for a prototype unit, it is not the output impedance of production units according to Ayre. Beyond that, Ayre chooses to keep silent. The battery in the Player is a "2950 mAH Li-Ion rechargeable for up to 8 hours of playback time" according to Pono.

Audiophile company yet again fails to understand impedance curves.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but while playing certain songs on mid-high volumes (Die Like A Rockstar by Danny Brown, Jesus Walks by Kanye West as examples) I hear a subtle clicking sound. When I plug my headphones to my phone the same occurs. After some research, I didn't find anything that helpful, but the possibility that it may be electromagnetic interference from the laptop (or Macbook in my case). I disconnected the devices in my room and the same occurred.

Anyone familiar with this from experience? Is it something a DAC would improve? Or am I overreacting and the songs are simply recorded that way?

Is $100 for the fiio E10 a good price ? Oh wait a minute, would the astro amp be sufficient enough to power the DT990 pro's on the PC as well ? Could I just hook that up for the PC like I would for the PS4 and not need the E10 ? I wish there was a quick way to know what level ohms different amps are capable of running.

$100 is a bad price because it goes for $75.99.

They don't have the astro on the list, and when I click some of the buttons nothing happens ...

Yeah but that's amazon.com and I'm stuck with good old amazon.ca which is usually double the price for no reason. .com won't ship to canada and on the off chance there is an item that will, the shipping would make up the other $25 + currency difference. But if the astro amp could power them I wouldn't need to pick up another amp.

Anyone have some good suggestions for cheap headphones to get as a good beginner modding project?

I was looking at the Takstar HI2050's, or one of the many rebrands. The eStudio HF100 seems to be one of them as far as I can tell and would be the cheapest here I think.

Is the astro a40 for about 137€ a good purchase for pc only use (without mixamp, it's too expensive for me)?
I need a headset which hast a good sound, an ok microphone, control for volume and mic and it shouldn't break in a few months when I use it normally.

So... I'm able to obtain these with a nice $300 discount. Still almost $300 though, anyone have a pair of these?

http://www.gradolabs.com/headphones/professional-series/item/24-ps500e

Try and listen before you buy. Especially since we're talking about Grados, which are all kind of bad from a high fidelity standpoint. Generally uneven V shaped FR plots, bad transient response, lots of distortion.

If I wanted fun cans, I'd pick Beyerdynamic DT990s, V-Moda M100s or something well before an expensive Grado.

Don't buy headsets...Buy headphones and then an Anti-Lion Modmic or V-Moda Boompro if detachable.

Man the chord Hugo TT and the 2qute chordette are Damn gorgeous. Can't wait for the reviews of these things.also the hifiman headphone amp looks really nice as well.

Anyone know a walk-in showroom in San Francisco where I could audition the Audeze LCD-3s? Not planning on upgrading until we make our next big deal in a year or two, but would love to compare them to my current headset after reading a lot about them here!

I bought the Momentum In-Ears last night and I'm wondering if it was wroth the purchase.

Used to have M-Duo Drivers from ME Electronics and the left earbud stopped cooperating. How's the durability on the Momentum?

Someone mentioned this specifically about higher impedance sets and the mixamp. Unfortunately, they say, the E10 is a source first usb device, with the E10 starting as the source, and allowing other devices to use the E10 as the dac/source. You can't use another source with it (Mixamp). They recommended for DT990 pros, the E9k. http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B008J26ZL4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2C4ZL3ONBMYEE&coliid=I2UGT7XC7WMO95
So to use the mixamp with DT990 pros on consoles, and then also on PC this chain would work ?

Every IEM I've had busted within months. Momentums have a 2 year warranty though, which is why I chose them.

Make sure you get the chance to audition the LCD-2 rev 2 at the same time. The LCD-3 sounds very good in isolation, but you need to witness the extent of diminishing returns for yourself as the LCD 3 is twice the cost of the LCD 2, and I don't think that the average person would feel the premium is justified unless they could afford to swallow the cost

I've been told that the Mixamp won't give you simulated surround sound on PC unless your sound card supports it already so with that setup I'd just use the E9K by itself with your PC and use the Mixamp and E9k combo with consoles.

Personally I have a similar setup. I have my Mixamp connected to my PS4, then I have the Mixamp audio going to an amp to power my headphones. On PC I just use my dac/amp and play games in stereo or use Razer Surround (a free program) for simulated surround. I don't use my Mixamp with my PC.

Came into a bit of money and made some pretty big upgrades to my headphone setup:

wG0JTDv.jpg

(pardon the shitty filter, ripped this off my instagram feed)

Got a pair of HD650s and an iFi Audio iDSD DAC/amp (upgraded from a Matrix M-Stage). The iDSD is ridiculous, musicality and detail retrieval are a marked improvement from the M-Stage, and the Matrix amp is already pretty damn good

Holy shit, you're using the old theme I used to use for Foobar before I got my new computer. I couldn't remember its name and didn't back it up. What's it called??!!!

Congrats on the HD650s too. I'm using mine as I type this :)

I cant recommend a place that would have them but i can recommend the following:

1) Bring your own source that YOU are familiar with (Laptop, DAP etc) - remember, the LCD3s are not easy to power.
2) Bring music that you know exactly how it sounds on your own setup - like 5 - 10 songs.
3) With demo units, ask them how long this has been run for. If it's a brand new, out of the box model it may not sound so good. Same as the amp they need to run it on. Same as all the cables.

I auditioned a set of LCD3s in Taiwan and it didnt sound good. When i got them home, with a proper amp, cable, source etc they sounded way better.

I think the new "entry" Audeze headphones could potentially make the pricing of the LCD3 seem ridiculous if they are as good as all reports indicate.

yeah the EL8s are only $700. No chance they are competing with the LCD3 though. They are meant to be their entry to the portable/affordable market. I dont think they will be competing with the LCD3.

Any thoughts on choosing some 'fun' phones for all round music, games and movies up to to $400? Been looking at the fidelio X2, vmoda m100, dt990, etc. Would like something with a bit punchier bass compared to my previous soundmagic hp100s. Also I want to get something with a metal band and forks as they just snapped at the fork despite me babying them. Think i must have a wide head! Will be running them off a beresford bushmaster. Should mention I'm in New Zealand so cant try any of them sadly.

Got the Cayin C5 the other day to pair up with my DX90 and IE800.

Boy oh boy this amp kicks ass. DX90 & IE800 already provides massive soundstage width, the C5 gives it even more space increasing height and depth. Better bass quality, more controlled, gives the mid's more punch and tames IE800's high as well.

Also bought a pair of Beyers T51p the other day. I'm expecting great things.

Ive never heard the IE800s. Ive heard really good things about them in terms of IEMs.

What other full size headphones do you have and do you have a desktop AMP/DAC setup?

You snapped a pair of HP100 wow... That's pretty impressive. The build quality seems quite sturdy. I think M100 is the way to go as the HP100 aren't exactly bass light in any means.

It snapped clean through right at the corner where the fork goes up to the swivel. No idea how it happened, they've never been dropped or abused. The headband, swivels and cups are pretty solid, but the forks are made of a quite thin U-shaped plastic section. Definitely the weakest part of the headphone. Damn shame really, they've been good otherwise. Interesting that the HP100s aren't actually considered neutral, could have sworn they were but then I bought them a year and a half ago so probably mis-remembering. Do you have the M100 yourself?

The Dolphins are out for delivery, and my velour pads have landed stateside. Thanks for the eBay link. Moon Audio is still "waiting" for them to arrive. Who know how long I would have waited.

Suck it, snowstorm of doom.

Well they came out with the HP 150, which might be a bit better built. I don't own the M100, but they're pretty easy to demo. I think a Radioshack actually had them. They're got this very aggressive mode range and full bass that sounds great with rock and hip hop. The top end is a bit weak though. I liked the HP 100 better overall though and the HP 150 is supposed to be improved somehow.

I really need to hurry up and get a Schiit stack for my PC for my 598s. I plugged them into an old Kenwood HT receiver and played some SNES for a bit. It's amazing how much better they sound with some power behind them compared to on board/mobo audio.

Apparently they are a sonic match made in heaven and the PP has one of the best power-size ratios around (2.4W in a 6x5x1.5 package).
We will see.
