People still post warning on image-heavy threads telling 56k'ers to stay away.

But does anyone really use a dial-up modem anymore? I thought almost everyone had a broadband access of some sort today. If you're still on 56k why? Cost-efficiency or what's you reason?

Which is really sad, because I have cable and live in the last place in the country that should finally have it (Wyoming).

Not everyone lives in an area with broadband coverage. It really sucks in rural America or in the monopoboned UK areas.

Not to shit on any 56ker's but my cable company (adelphia) just upgraded their basic service. Now I dl porn at 6-8Mbps. What is that like 7000 times faster then 56k. HAW HAW

They sell broadband lines over there but at rediculous prices. $100+ for a 256/64 line etc. And you have to pay for the fiber as well (and they live a LONG way from the centre)

I reckon my dad is going to take it someday or another, but not at these prices

Left the 56kbps train (acually 128kbps, dual ISDN) back in late 2003 and got on the 24mbps up/down train after a 2 month hiatus, December 25, 2003.

I know in Ohio, in most of the rural areas you can get DSL. But the startup costs scare alot of people away from going that route.

Not at college (obviously), but at home, yes. My parents have always been pretty frugal (we never had cable), and for their purposes -- e-mail and limited web browsing -- broadband is too expensive to be worth it.

I still use 56K. For some reason, DSL isn't available in my zip code but it's available every where else in the surrounding area. I COULD get a cable connection from Optimum Online, but seeing as how DSL is cheaper and I've got a not-so-legal cable setup, I won't be calling them any time soon. :lol

My sister's new house (well.. she's approaching ownership of a year now) is still on 56k.

I'm gonna go and stay with her when I start uni so she'll get broadband then. But when I'm there for breaks 56k makes my heart cry. She sees no reason to get broadband yet because she isn't a heavy user. Just checks her Yahoo email each day, 'bout it.

Me moving there combined with torrenting shall soon change that. :lol

My in-laws live out in the middle of nowhere. Cable doesn't even reach them. They are still using 28k.

I've got a T1 line at work, but it's 56k at home. I live in the Baltimore County, MD about 15 miles from city, but DSL hasn't made it down to my little waterfront neighborhood yet. I signed up for Verizon to notify me when DSL becomes available, at which time I'll be on it like Oprah on a baked ham.

Same reason my dad hadn't connected. His place pretty much in the rainforest. I think the nearest trunk is half a mile down a dirt road.
