that is very true, he has been the longest lasting in like forever but it can't be an easy job
It can't be easy being so corrupt. Pick an island in the Caribbean, and it's lead by some corrupt douche. This guy is no different, if not worse. The mere fact that he lived in a palace in the poorest country in the area should be telling enough. Praswell is the first person I've seen get on tv and rip into the Haitian government.

Western governments are complicit in this with their neglect. The US has its hands pretty damn dirty here IMO. But even then, all that aid that goes there isn't being distributed properly. There's too much corruption, so the fact that the president is homeless now is just deserts.

People are gonna be shocked and this might land Haiti the most aid it's ever gotten. But it will be forgotten within the year, and the conditions will never improve. Haiti is like the Western Hemisphere's secret shame. PEACE.

Death toll now estimated to between 30 000- 50 000.
Not even 10% of what was first estimated.

its not like everything was cleaned up and bodies where counted so we can hope for the lower number, I would not mind the lowest number possible now we are into the second night

Sorry if it's in here already but Pat Robertson is the most vile human being alive:

Go to Hell, Pat Robertson: Haiti Needs Help, Not Stupidity

Haiti is suffering, and the only response from Christians and other decent human beings is compassion, love, and all the concrete support we can supply. Tonight I am going to be with students from Haiti, and students who have family there. We are going to offer prayers and support for one another. This disaster has to become front and center in the hearts and minds of Americans. We should all be thinking of how to help.

Instead, Pat Robertson opined on his TV show, the 700 Club that this happened because, in order to gain liberty from the French, Haiti (read: black people) made a pact with the Devil.
"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said, we will serve you if you'll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the Devil said, okay it's a deal."
Go to Hell, Pat Robertson -- and the sooner the better. Your 'theological' nonsense is revolting. Don't speak for Haiti, and don't speak for God. Haiti is suffering a catastrophe and you offer silliness at best, and racism at the worst. Haiti was the first island in the Western hemisphere to overthrow slavery and white oppression -- this is what you call a pact with the Devil? God's heart is breaking with this tragedy, and ours should be too. You never had much credibility -- but now it is all gone.

That is enough time spent on you. Let's get back to thinking how we can call upon all of the goodness in our traditions and in our country to help the people of Haiti.

like I said before this is an old belief of missionaries to Haiti, this is what they teach they most likely made that story up themselves you would not believe the number of Haitian Christians who buy into this story as fact - they tell you the name of the man, the day he did it its just too much

Pat repeating that just makes him take more heat, I hope it blows up in his face

Holy shit, 500,000 people possibly dead? I read the headline, but assumed that it was relatively minor (i.e. a few dozen people injured), but this is just insane. Is the Red Cross or someone doing a donation drive? Can someone link me?

I feel bad, but I read that as "Rob Patternson is the most vile human being alive", was confused, read the article, thought "Cedric Diggory, you monstrous, hateful, evil son of a bitch!", then re-read it and saw the mention of the 700 club.

It's weird, but Pat Robertson saying it softened my outrage somewhat by removing the element of shock. It's a disgusting, racist thing he said and he deserves to burn on whatever hell he believes in suffering from the worst kind of syphilis for this and all the other shit he's pulled, but as it is, it's just one more thing about him to be mad at, you know?

We can concentrate on bringing him down later.

EDIT: Death toll revised down to 30,000

That's good, but it's still a horrendous number. Damn.

Thank god it wasn't 500,000 even I said holy shit if true. Still 50,000 is a lot and sad. However, I find it alarming that so many cities and communities lay on these severe fault lines. Maybe if they had the technology available when these states were founded they would have re-located or decided to build somewhere else. Our planet is a living breathing world of its own and it acts on its own which can be very destructive and unfortunately some people are in the wrong place at the wrong time when it does.

Holy crap, I came in here because of the title. Happy that it is "only" 50K-ish.

I've always wondered, is there no early warning system for earthquakes or something?

No, and especially no if the epicenter is right underneath the city.
If it was further out, there would be a short delay between the faster P waves and slower S waves (nothing substantial though)
Other than that, no. The scientists knew a large earth quake was due in that area, but that's no warning really.

None at all. You can warn people that are far from the epicentre that shockwaves are coming, but people on or near the fault line are f*cked.

It's pretty much impossible unless you have a way of measuring stresses along a fault line running under the sea and have a system of predicting when that stress will be enough to cause a movement.

texting haiti to 90999 donates 10$ to red cross

also some corporate dollars are coming in:

  • Kellogg Company Supports Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts with $250,000 Grant to American Red Cross
  • CIBC Group of Companies donates $100,000 to Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts
  • Scotiabank Contributes $250,000
  • RBC Donates $100,000 to Red Cross
  • AT&T Supports Text-Messaging Donations to Aid Haiti Quake Victims
  • Wells Fargo Pledges $100,000 to Aid Disaster Relief Efforts in Haiti
  • UPS Donates $1 Million to Haitian Earthquake Relief
  • Walmart Donates $600,000 in Response to Haiti Earthquake
  • BMO Financial Group Announces $250,000 Donation to the Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Fund

Perhaps the thread title should be changed to "may top 100,000." The original edit brought the desired attention to the crisis, but it's a little OTT.

That's a lot of money from UPS.

If initial estimates are 30 to 50 thousand, then 300 to 400 thousand may very well happen, based on previous earthquakes someone earlier in the thread mentioned.

So very sad and heartbreaking :(

It's not really worth arguing over, time will tell.

UPS is awesome.

And AT&T... good job, as always.

That sucks. Is it provably impossible and future research would do nothing, or could we perhaps find a way in the future? :(

I'm ashamed that I have been so busy at work that I haven't had time to actually read the news and see how tragic this earthquake was. I wish I could volunteer to help but for now I will settle with donating as much as I can.

500,000? Holy shit.

Damn its horrible.

Considering all the fucked up things that happen in Haiti (poverty, human slave trading, and corruption) this just tops it off.

At least the American corporations are quick to act, even if the donations are meant to be good PR, at least the people will get some aid.

The 500,000 number will all depend on what we do from today on

Haiti already had bad Health Care and little clean water before the quake, all the people who survived it need to survive the aftermath.

What I don't understand is why buildings put up my major international entities, like the UN, weren't built to modern standards?

Modern standards does not automatically include earthquakes. That's relegated to locations that typically have them.

So what disaster relief program would be the best to donate to? I want to give aid directly to the victims of the earthquake.

TEXT TO DONATE:

U.S.
Wyclef Jean's Yéle Haiti charity where you can text YELE to 501501 to give $5 to help with earthquake relief efforts.

The US State Department seems to favor the Red Cross, where you can text "HAITI" to "90999" to donate $10 to the Red Cross.

The donations are added to your cellphone bill.

CANADA:
In Canada, people can donate $5 to the Salvation Army by texting "Haiti" to 45678 through a system set up by the Mobile Giving Foundation.

But I want to donate $100. I can't donate using a pre-paid phone.

omg, I've been trying to keep up with the news, but wow. What horrible tragedy. I'm definitely going to donate.

Damn. Walmart outdone by UPS.

The most important thing now is to get the aid to the people but unfortunately in 2-3 months you are going to see reports of aid being stolen or sold by government officials or criminal gangs. Once the money starts to flow its going to be corruption central. It never fails.

Of course. All this money being sent is a waste.

If you really want to help them, build infrastructure through smaller charities like 3angels or microfinance someone. Giving aid after a disaster is just a cash cow for bandits and corrupted officials. We saw this with the hurricanes

I will be donating $500 to a local bank account for this. Will try and gather more. Such a disaster... man, makes me depressed. So many thoughts rushing in at the same time. Good luck to those there.

No, money being sent to food organizations is probably safe.

Red Cross and any food organization should be good. Same with UN affiliated groups. I'm willing to donate one of my smaller paycheques, but I want to make sure my donation doesnt fall into the hands of a thief or a Haitian government official.
