Modern standards does not automatically include earthquakes. That's relegated to locations that typically have them.

And yet... there was an Earthquake just as bad as this one back in the 1700's.

Doesn't that... you know... clue people into building via Earthquake standards there?

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems pretty stupid to me to ignore building for Earthquakes on an island on a fault-line.

something that happens every 200 years is not going to scare folks into spending extra
I also doubt the UN built that 5 story building they used as their HQ

seems stupid but I doubt this possibility was on the UN's mind

I also doubt Haiti will rebuild with Earthquake proof codes as a standard the money would need to be their for such a thing

I was in Taiwan this winter when a 5.0 earthquake happened (7.0 in eastern Taiwan). And I felt ... damn safe, everyone were calm and didn't need to care about it. Damage was low, it was only news-worthy for a day.

I don't expect earthquake proof buildings for Haiti in the near future, but I really hope for at least solid buildings. It angers me when people die because of bad buildings.

Actually, I read after I made that post that indeed the UN did not build that building. It used to be a hotel and it was built using reinforced concrete

Washington - US President Barack Obama announced Thursday the United States was providing an initial 100 million dollars in aid to Haiti as military and civilian rescue teams arrived on the ground to search for survivors of the massive earthquake. Obama called the Tuesday afternoon quake that struck Haiti "nothing less than devastating" and instructed all departments of the US government to make the rescue effort a top priority.

"One of the largest relief efforts in our recent history is moving towards Haiti," Obama said in a speech at the White House.

The 100 million dollars will help pay for the rescue effort as well as provide food, water and medicine, Obama said.

"This investment will grow over the coming year as we embark on the long-term recovery from this unimaginable tragedy," Obama said.

The scale of devastation remained unclear, but Haitian officials spoke of up to 100,000 dead from the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that has wrecked the capital Port-au-Prince, home to some 1.9 million people.

To the people of Haiti, Obama said: "You will not be forsaken. You will not be forgotten."

The US Navy was en route to Haiti. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson was picking up supplies and heading to the vicinity, and an amphibious ship carrying 2,000 Marines was also on the way. The Pentagon said the Marines could be sent in if the security environment deteriorates.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said on US television a text messaging system set up by the State Department for individuals to donate 10 dollars through the Red Cross has raised 3 million dollars so far.

Several US states has sent rescue teams to help pull possible survivors from the rubble.

http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/...es-100-million-dollars-to-haiti--summary.html

That's $100 million from the government. And just everyday people have already sent $3 Million through the Red Cross "HAITI" text messaging system. This is great so far.

In poor countries like that, except for some sorporate buildings (if there are any) building to Earthquake standards just isn't feasible. It's all rybar and concrete.

That's what I expected. It seems a leap of logic is required to land on the conclusion that the UN was negligent in not building to modern standards- that leap being the assumption the UN was involved in the construction of their headquarters.

And on the point of "they should have known better"... So should Americans living in the Midwest and the East Coast, both of which are home to major fault lines, and neither has particularly stringent codes for building to "modern" seismic standards.

yup a 7.0 in NYC would be crazy mess, people should think about that

We got a group of firefighters joining up with the red cross relief volunteer task force going in to haiti for a collaborative effort with the los Angeles firefighter relief unit.

Taiwan was pretty devastated in 1999 by a 7.3 earthquake.

Despite the ability for a Hurricane to wipe out a good portion of North Florida with a drop of a hat, there are still no strict building codes up there, like there are in South Florida. It's like people have to wait for a disaster to react.

Hurriance Andew in Miami helped bring stronger building codes to that area, and those codes slowly moved up to Broward (Fort Lauderdale) and Palm Beach County (Palm Beach)...but you can still build a house in Orlando out of wood if you want. Everything in S.Florida has to be concrete, and have certain types of roof straps, and some wform of windstorm window protection since 2002.

Why? because it costs more money to build a cement home with shutters, then a frame home with shingles. It's sad that it will take a serious storm for the rest of Florida to realize this.

GEORGE CLOONEY - CLOONEY TO HOST HAITI TELETHON

GEORGE CLOONEY is the latest celebrity to plead for help in raising funds for the Haitian earthquake relief effort - the actor will host a U.S. telethon later this month (Jan10).
The Up in the Air star has reportedly partnered with MTV to host the show next Friday (22Jan10).
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Clooney is urging his famous pals to appear on the telethon to aid in fundraising.
The actor's pal Brad Pitt and partner Angelina Jolie have already donated $1 million (£625,000) to Doctors Without Borders and Haitian singer Wyclef Jean has also urged support for earthquake survivors through his Yele Haiti charity.
Stars including Ben Stiller, Jessica Alba, Shakira, Oprah Winfrey and Chris Martin have also called for people to lend their support to those left homeless after Tuesday's (12Jan10) disaster.

Anyone have any updates? A couple people posted about gunfire, water manes breaking, some gaffers still waiting to hear from family members. Just curious.

Twitter hoax spreads rumors of airlines' free flights to Haiti

Twitter was buzzing Thursday morning with news that several airlines are flying doctors and nurses to Haiti free of charge to help with relief efforts there in the wake of Tuesday's devastating earthquake.

The only problem: The rumors are false, an American Airlines spokesman says.

"Last night's hoax on Twitter about American and JetBlue flying doctors and nurses to Haiti for free was just that -- a hoax. We don't know who is responsible, but it's a very low thing to do," airline spokesman Tim Smith said in e-mails sent Thursday.

Twitter users also circulated a rumor that UPS would ship for free any package under 50 lbs. to Haiti. In a blog post Wednesday on UPS's Web site, a spokeswoman debunked the rumor and said that destruction of Haiti's roads and communications networks "means our own shipping services to Haiti are on hold."

UPS is donating $1 million to help the people of Haiti through relief agencies, she said.

On Wednesday, American and American Eagle sent three planes to Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, carrying 30,000 pounds of water, food and other nonperishable goods for its more than 100 employees who work at the airport there and for assistance at Port-au-Prince hospitals, the airline said in a news release.

Three more relief flights are planned from Puerto Rico to Haiti on Thursday, and an additional three for Friday, the airline said.

"We've incentivized our 62 million AAdvantage members to give cash to Red Cross and receive bonus miles from us," Smith added. "We cannot fly any passengers to Haiti at this time and our efforts on the humanitarian front are as described above."

A spokeswoman for JetBlue said the airline is flying relief workers from agencies such as the American Red Cross free of charge to Santo Domingo in the neighboring Dominican Republic, but only after they have been vetted by the Haitian Consulate. The consulate then arranges transportation for passengers from Santo Domingo to Port-au-Prince, she said.

"There have been a lot of people mobilizing on Twitter asking for our support. And I think that's where these rumors are coming from," JetBlue spokeswoman Alison Croyle said.

"We're not offering free transportation for just any doctors who walk up and want to fly there."

The American Airlines and JetBlue rumors erupted quickly on Twitter and other social networks, with people retweeting the Haitian Consulate's New York City phone number, which medical professionals could supposedly call for free flights.

Calls overwhelmed the consulate, resulting in repeated busy signals for callers.

But by late Thursday morning, word appeared to be spreading that the rumors were not true.

Posted one user on Twitter about 10:30 a.m. ET: "American Airline and Jet Blue Are NOT Flying doctors and nurses into Haiti for free. Do NOT call them."

Do you live in the eastern part of the US?

Is your home or apartment built to withstand an earthquake? Do you have earthquake insurance?

How about hurricane protection? NYC and Boston could both get a direct hit, are they built to withstand that?

# 1755, Boston/Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Earthquake estimated to be magnitude 6.0; buildings damaged.
# 1811 & 1812 -- New Madrid, Missouri, experienced the three largest earthquakes known to have occurred in North America (magnitudes estimated between 7.2 and 8.3) and 203 damaging aftershocks. Soil liquefaction occurred.
# 1886, Charleston, South Carolina. Estimated magnitude 6.8. Soil liquefaction occurred. Extensive damage; 60 people or more died. Over 400 aftershocks over the next 30 years.

they are not counting or allowing people to identify bodies, I have seen on CNN that a large dump truck is parked outside the hospital and they are simply dumping the dead into the back of that huge dump truck is horrible

the final total of dead will never be known and those with missing loved ones may never find them its totally insane!

They should be taking pictures of the dead for identification and bury the corpses.

I doubt they were prepared to take thousands of photos this is a very poor 3rd World country, the CNN report was just insane... someone from outside needs to take over the relief efforts soon but things are moving very slow.

they have to move the bodies before disease starts to affect the living among them

here is the Hospital and Trucks http://cnn.com/video/?/video/world/2010/01/14/nr.lok.gupta.hospital.bodies.cnn

same hospital but he did not pan the camera to the truck to the right in that clip

The communication and logistical problem is still a major hinderance. There is virtually no cell phone reception at all. The relief workers are designating entire fields for the dead because there is literally no where to put them all. Not to mention the 85 degree heat as well. Situation is very tense. I hope they dont start burning the bodies.

Wait, so if I text that number, Verizon will donate $10, and charge my cell phone bill for it? Can anyone confirm that all $10 will go to the Red Cross?

Yeah text "HAITI" to "90999" to donate $10 to the Red Cross.
The donations are added to your cellphone bill.

Just sent it. Should I get some return message to confirm that it went through?

the best confirmation would be your phone bill its repeated all over the news that this is a good way to send the money so its cool

Picture 22 is just jaw dropping.

Picture 22 is really bad, can you imagine that in 85 degree heat and the smell?

This thread was unreadable because a bunch of jackoffs kept hitting F5 just to confirm the PS3 and 360 are still getting their asses handed to them by the Wii. Now I remember why I stopped reading the Gaming forum. SMH. PEACE.

Wyclef Jean's Haiti Relief Tweets Raise $1 Million
Wyclef Jean Tweets Tiger Woods May Donate $3 Million for Haiti Relief

A who's who of celebrities – from Haitian-born musician Wyclef Jean to comedian Ben Stiller – have harnessed the power of the Internet and mobile communications to quickly generate millions of dollars in donations for disaster relief in Haiti.

Never has so much money been raised for relief so soon after a disaster, fund-raising experts say.

Within hours of the earthquake, scores of boldface names began using their Twitter and Facebook posts to comment on the disaster and provide links where their millions of followers could contribute to help the people of Haiti.

Among those appealing for aid: Stiller, Tyra Banks, Dr. Phil, Shaquille O'Neal, Lenny Kravitz, the Dixie Chicks, Steve Nash, Alyssa Milano, John Legend, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Shakira.

"STATE OF EMERGENCY!!" said the musician P. Diddy to his 2.4 million Twitter followers.

"Come on people. Haiti needs us," wrote the rapper known as Fabulous to his 391,000 followers on Twitter.

Nash, the all-star guard for the Phoenix Suns, tweeted several links where people could donate to earthquake relief. "Haiti's the only thing on my mind this am," he tweeted today.

The cascade of celebrity messages has created a non-stop viral telethon, instantly raising cash for a variety of organizations ranging from the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders to little-known charities like the one run by Haitian-born center Samuel Dalembert of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers.

Figuring out the dead persons, finding the missing persons, and sheltering the displaced persons is a immense challenge for a developed country, for an underdeveloped, viciously corrupt place like Haiti, it's going to be a bloody nightmare. I hope the aid comes in the form of food, water, and construction as opposed to straight cash, because that has a history of being embezzled by corrupt Haitian officials. The cash needs to be spent by the relief agencies on the ground, the government and many local authorities simply cannot be trusted.

More assholes coming out of the woodwork.
Rush Limbaugh told his audience not to give money to Haiti after it was hit by an earthquake. Limbaugh said the country is run by dictatorships and the U.S. has already helped it.

On Wednesday, radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh claimed President Obama is rushing to the aid of Haiti because it is a black community.

Among his comments, Limbaugh said Clinton was sending an envoy to the island nation the U.S. has already helped. The shock jock said aid would be used by the people of Haiti to become lazy.
Thaindian News quotes Limbaugh from the Wednesday show:

“Use this to burnish their, shall we say, credibility with the black community, in the… the both light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country. It’s made to order for them.”

Limbaugh also found fault with the White House for having a website that directs people to charitable organizations operating in Haiti.
Talking with a caller, Limbaugh speculated that donating via the site puts your money at risk and will not reach Haitians.
As the Huffington Post reports, Limbaugh said, "We've already donated to Haiti. It's called the U.S. income tax."

These people don't even have enough money to afford infrastructure for clean, running water.
It's easy to pass judgment from a first-world country when you've never had to worry about the basic essentials of life. I'm sure they'll take critiques of buildings standards under consideration, though.

I had to go to the emergency room on Sunday night because of dehydration (Severe gastroenteritis). I've been thinking back to how miserable I was in spite of all the shit I had to help me out (Ice to make my headache feel better, water to drink even though I couldn't keep it down, indoor plumbing, electricity, shelter, a hospital to go to, and a car to get me there). These people don't have most of that under normal circumstances, let alone during a catastrophe; try to think about these things before you spout off about shit like building codes in a country where people are thankful to have any shelter at all.
