8-4 Play 9/9/2011 [feat. Ryan Payton]

Considering they were talking about it for months, a better way to have done it might have been one 'mainline' title an episode, just at the end of each episode. That'd give them time to fire them up and play a little bit too.

I would have loved that so much. I guess it's a bit too late for that now, but it would've been nice to give each one an almost equal amount of time, except for black sheep like RE: Gaiden.

Listening now...

Said it in other thread, but never under estimate Capcom's ability to scupper plans they themselves are already involved in.

in this case : they show or hint strongly regarding the next MH on PSP. Which then somewhat neuters the 3DS version .

Really enjoyed this episode and the ending totally rocked and caught me off guard. :P
Heck, I have been neglecting Weekend Confirmed this weekend because of this week's 8-4 episode if that says anything. Really enjoyed Ryan calling out John's bias towards the PS3... though I must admit I am a PS3 fanboy as well. To me, Sony puts out the type of games I want more than Microsoft (ie. Ico, Last Guardian, Journey, you know those minimalist artsy type of games... in addition to the blockbusters with a focus on narrative like Uncharted), and I am far from an online gamer (and starting to loathe the FPS genre) so I definitely feel that the Playstation is where my allegiance to stay because I want more of these type of experiences on my console.

I'd say 3G already did that. Vita was the assumed home for MH all along, with MHP3 even running on it during it's public debut and big emphasis put on dual analog for camera control. From rumors and such, all the MH clones were focusing on the system too (Phantasy Star, God Eater, Ragnorak Odyssey), from day zero it's been expected that Vita would be THE place for Hunting Action.

Now all of a sudden 3DS gets the "next" MH, exclusuvely, this year and with a control add on for it specifically. You're dead on about Capcom's actions, but it's already happened and in the opposite direction.

Pretty good episode, I don't mind the bias though .. I mean these people are not journalists anymore, so hey, it happens.

Concerning the RE episode, I thought it was great especially for someone like me that has always been interested in the games but can never really get to play them properly (horror isnt my genre) It fascinated me that Capcom was the company that made that series, its a very un-Capcom game in soooo many respects. I think spending a good 30 minutes on each game is enough, get the good bits out, then move on to the next game ... theres definitely enough of them.

Also, the hardest Zelda game is Majoras Mask. I thought that was pretty well known so Im surprised people are forgetting that it was Aonuma that made that game, he knows whats up.

I think the NES games are still harder, but MM is definitely the most difficult Zelda since. It's mostly time management though, once you wrap your head around the structure it's not too bad. It has the hardest archery game too.

I think NES Zelda games are hard mostly because of hardware limitations, or because of design decisions made to make the player call the Nintendo Tip Line. Lots of NES games were hard to hide the lack of content.

Majora's mask is made from scratch to be a challenging game. Combat, health, dungeons, etc. Its hard by design, not by necessity.

well, it's going to be interesting to watch either way :D

i've already stated elsewhere on GAF that i think the expectations for the 3DS version are off the mark for several reasons and i don't fancy getting pelted with tomatoes again ;)

If Capcom even breathes a hint about PSP MHP 3G at TGS or , as i expect, they out and out just show it then i don't think Tri G is going to carry the weight people think it will but hey. I'm happy that this TGS has a whole ton of subplots and drama. I've skipped the last two TGS as the last 4 or so have all sucked - but this week, starting tomorrow, i think the blue touch paper will get lit and we'll see some real fireworks. Exciting times.

Oh - and the podcast was outstanding as always. Big fan of Ryan - glad to see him going up and up and up in the world. C

In the J-sales thread the consensus seemed to be that Tri G would sell more than Tri but less than P2G, probably around what P2 sold. Honestly, I think that's a pretty reasonable range to look at.

And from rumorgate, we basically know what's going to be at TGS for Vita (P3HD). Capcom's not going to announce P3G until later in 2012, and even then it's most likely going to lead on PSP still yet. It's not going to be at all unexpected though, nobody started thinking MH jumped ship entirely with 3G. This isn't Drgaon Quest. ;)

This is the best podcast I've listened to in a while. Topical, lengthy, and considered discussion on relevant issues in the industry. Good job!

Ryan Payton was an excellent guest. His passion and knowledge for games and the industry really comes through
and he even mentioned the game I work on (the Chinese version anyways), which made me totally geek out!
:)

Regarding the reason Capcom had for releasing HD versions of Code Veronica and RE4 specifically... wouldn't that simply be because everything in those games is in realtime 3d? I doubt the reason behind it is story-related... but hey, you never know. :P

Also, I generally love the podcast, and maybe I'm in the minority here, but sometimes I really wish Mark would take a step back and let the others do the talking for a while. For example, I was looking forward to hear Hiroko give her impressions of Aquaria, but it all ended up with Mark talking like 80 % of the time leading into discussions with the other guys. :P
I mean, sure, I've heard impressions of the game before and it seemed like the point with bringing it up was mostly to mention how you're working on the Japanese version and so on... but I was still kind of disappointed. Not that I hate Mark or anything, I think he's great and brings a lot to the podcast, but still.

Cautiously optimistic about the forthcoming TGS podcasts. There's already so much to discuss and I hope that the cavalcade of special podcast guests won't overwhelm the news.

JJ will be jizzing all over the MonHun news, lol

I really, really want to see the video or transcript or whatever of the CEDEC talk that Ryan Payton did regarding his experience and lessons learned from working on both sides of the gaming industry. Is that already available in English somewhere, or what.

If Ryan Payton lives in Japan like these guys, he should be on the podcast more often IMO. He is a great addition to the cast. There are always super interesting discussions going on when he is in.

Another great episode guys. You HAVE to do a pre-TGS show soon, where you talk about MH4 and the Nintendo conf.

They should make it a 5 hour podcast. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO JOHN.

Yeah, I'm eager to hear everyone's views about the MH4 omegaton. I can wait though, Sony's response tonight should give use a better understanding of where everything's headed.
