8 player mutiplayer Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Announced

I get that Nintendo wants to sell amiibos, but this video makes the game seem very multiplayer unfriendly - like your friend needs to go out and buy an amiibo if he wants to be able to jump in the game and play.
No?

Just give him a controller and let him play?
Amiibo is just an AI that you can train that is it.

Just to confirm, this local only, right?

I really cannot imagine 8-player online working well at all.

It is local only, yeah.

The laws of physics are a harsh mistress for 8 player real time fighting. No form of extrapolation like FPS and racers have, so it'd be lag central.

Okay. In the 3DS game 2 player matches tend to be a lot smoother than 4 player ones which can become a lag filled piece of shit if one player is a weak link in the chain (and it probably won't be a lot better on the Wii U as the official LAN adapter is discontinued so many people won't bother getting one to help here) and you want to double the number of players? What do you think will happen?

Why the hell did Nintendo discontinued the LAN adapter?? Sakurai even recommended it in a Smash direct, for lords sake! I really hope that the 4-player online is really good, because 98% of the WiiU users are gonna be using crappy Wi-Fi connections...

I hate when companies do this. The Classic Controller was also discontinued, although you must have it or else you can't play Super NES and N64 games on Wii mode!
SMH.

Well I just checked my wii u but I use the wii lan adapter and so because of the wii u only has 4 usb ports I can't even be online when 8 people are playing :P

Where the hell am I gonna find 7 motherfuckers to play this with locally? Thanks for reminding me how depressed and alone I am, Nintendo.

Just saw this on twitter

I still want to find out if the white cable is required. My false hope is required for Rumble.

At least in this case a generic ASIX AX 88772 USB > LAN adapter should work (that is the tech the official one uses, I bought one off Amazon which was advertised as Wii U compatible).

Are you absolutely sure it's discontinued? I bought a brand new official one from Amazon a few days ago. It even had a Wii U logo on it.

Is there Nintendo Magic working again? Cause you can use 8 3DS as controllers??? 8?????? Will they work wireless? It must be sorcery of somekind....I get it with Wii-Motes and controllers and stuff...but 3DS?

Is something like that even possible?

Think I read that you can play this with the original wii motes? Can anyone confirm? Because I have 4 of those and two motion plus that came in the wii u bundle so might get this for some casual Christmas chaos with the family.

Skipped the wii melee but this one looks so full of content.

It was discontinued for a while but Nintendo brought them back and rebranded them so yeah, they should be available

Are you required to use 4 wired GameCube controllers if you want 8 human players? I don't see how it'd work otherwise if you had e.g. 8 Wii U Pro Controllers.

I wish it was online, but I can see why it's not. It should be fun, and I'm interested to see what kind of events are tied in with it.

16 player Smash or bust for Smash 5 though.

The website has a list of total number of controllers possible in 8 player Smash.

- Wii U GamePad (maximum: 1)
- Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus* (maximum: 7)
- Wii U Pro Controller (maximum: 7)
- Nintendo GameCube Controller** (maximum: 8)
- Nintendo 3DS or 2DS system*** (maximum: 8)

* Includes expansion controllers, such as the Nunchuk or Classic Controller Pro.
** Two Wii U GameCube Controller Adapters are required to connect eight GameCube controllers.
*** In order to use a Nintendo 3DS as a controller, each Nintendo 3DS or 2DS system must have Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

They recommended the lan Adapter again in the 50 facts, I don'tthink they discontinued it

Neat - I've got a smorgasbord of Nintendo controllers: 2 GameCube, 1 Wii Classic Controller, 2 Wii Classic Controller Pro, 3 black Wii Remotes (one with MotionPlus), 4 white Wii Remotes (one with MotionPlus addon), 2 Wii U Pro Controller and a Gamepad.

Good to know that everything is supported, but I do think I'll need to get a couple more Wii U Pro Controllers and Wii Remote+ from Nippon Yasan.

Dayum I can barely handle 4p smash, 8p will be a giant clusterfuck.

Still it sounds like it could be fun when your drunk or something.

Now to convince my friend to buy the game and some gamecube adapters...

Same boat here... my group of friends that used to play smash in high school / college have all moved away (including myself). My wife will play a little and my sister is surprisingly good at Smash, but I'll miss having real competition like I used to. Hopefully the online modes are pretty good.

im trying to think or another 8 player fighting game that is online. Help me out here.
I think Guardian Heroes is 12 player for some modes. No idea if it has issues due to that or how the game is structured (like do you have as many timing dependent techs Smash). I did find a Youtube comment saying (best source of info):

You know, I don't think I've ever seen a full 12 player match without lag. You'd have to find 12 friends with high speed internet for that to work.

Too bad I will never get to play 8-player Smash, but cool it's possible I guess.

I only have my cousin to play Smash with.

Online better be good though, GAF tournaments should be fun.

Sorry to be a debbie downer, but am I the only one who wishes that they had kept it to 4 players in order to allow for higher quality character models, stages, and graphic effects?

I'm liking the 2v2v2v2 with 4 players, each with their amiibo as a teammate

8 player smash is what sold me on the actual functionality of amiibo instead of just picking one up because they look nice
This actually does sound very fun.

Or any co-op with Amiibo support for that matter.

My trepidation after talking to my bud. May hold off on day one to see the feedback on online multi.

No way, this is literally the perfect party game now. No more waiting ages for a turn if you're in a big group.

But I don't think the no of players would've affected the character models or graphic effects. I guess if the big stages piss you off that much then that's fair, then.

Considering the game is already outputting in 1080p, at 60fps (which is something not even half of current-gen games can manage doing on more powerful consoles), and the models look ten times more gorgeous and rounded than Brawl's which were also mired by a tepid color palette and unnatural textures, it's amazing that they managed to get 8-player Smash working in general. The game looks spectacular enough already.

I'm legitimately amazed at how much they're not holding back as far as Smash Wii U goes. Any concerns of Smash 3DS being some sort of hindrance to the sheer content and capability of the Wii U's version were dashed in under 30 minutes. It's quite incredible how Smash manages to push the envelope yet again.

Wait, seven Wii remotes? I had no idea that was possible to do...

Maybe it is on the Wii U and not the original Wii.

Great to know you can have two GameCube adapters, though.
The Wiimote uses bluetooth, which supports up to 7 attached devices at once. I would think the original Wii could probably technically support 7 at once but no game supported that many controllers.

Realistically I will never use it, but I'm happy for those that will.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with the graphics. To be 100% honest, I would have even been ok if we had only gotten the 3DS version.

My simple point is that clearly it is more taxing to run the game with 8 players vs 4, and they clearly could have made different decisions graphically if they had gone that route.

Again, I recognize that I am introducing negativity here. I am still going to buy this the first second it goes on sale. I'm just frustrated that the game was developed around this feature and I will never get to use it outside of event matches and multi-man smash.
