I actually thought Wolf was Leo's best performance yet, but the McConaugisance can not be stopped at this point. Academy loves for actors to show their work, and they go ga-ga for actors "transforming" themselves for The Craft.
Well it is incredible that he went from the poster boy for tentpole "experience" films to putting in consistently good work.

After I saw The Lincoln Lawyer it was like watching a completely different guy.

That McQueen video... the way they all sit there in silence after, and Reitman's little jokey comment looooool. Absolutely shamed into a non answer.

Alright, I'm angry now.

I should stop watching the Oscars, everytime I get mad about movies that got nominated and movies that didn't. :lol

Russel got nominated for best director, for crying out loud, but Kechiche didn't. Bullshit.
Alright i'm done talking about American Hustle. Unless it wins something.

Blue wasn't eligible since it missed the stupid deadline by 9 days.

And to be fair, it's not really France's fault, but the film's distributor in the country failing to realize that they just needed to push the release date up. Who the hell doesn't see that as a problem when you know damn well what the deadlines are in advance?

McConnaissance, and he's likely going to win the award because people like him on True Detective more than anything :)

People were rallying for McConaughey for months before True Detective premiered.

It certainly doesn't hurt to have a constant reminder of how good he is every week during the voting period, however. It's an unusual circumstance. Saying he's somehow winning this because of his TV show is disingenuous, though. He was already well on his way.

So, technically speaking, it could have been nominated for best movie but not foreing? Who the hell is in charge of these things at the academy? :lol

There are some hilarious rules at work, like how Best Song submissions can't use samples, as the samples themselves were never specifically written for that film. Like, who the fuck really gives a shit?

Agree with all of this. Although I'd say it doesn't need any white guilt card played in its favour because it speaks for itself as an excellent film. It's basically an art film that's been hijacked by an oversimplified marketing campaign targeted at a demographic thought to eat up the 'prestige' angle. Well, I guess that (read: award season attention) was the price of getting it made via the auspices of Brad Pitt's production company. McQueen will be fine whatever happens tonight though, especially if he delivers on that HBO series he's working on.

It doesn't need it at all, but look at the bloggers like Sasha Stone and company treating Gravity like is the devil because is going to swept the Oscars and using the white guilt card to support 12 Years. I swear I have black friends that are disgusted about comments like that or "it needs to win because slavery" To them is almost like they're treated like someone with AIDS or any sort of illness, for christ's sake. The world is not black and white and we are all equals, no matter what color your skin is or what language do you speak. Support any film about any subject because you think it deserves to, not because is about race or whatever. Importance has never been a factor at the Oscars and I know it, you know it and everyone knows it.

It's exactly what I don't want to happen. People like to remember academy-award winning films for anything but their quality or lack of. Like Kris Tapley said last night: enjoy the Oscars on sunday, enjoy the movies forever.

So there's a live stream, but it's only if you're a cable subscriber to certain companies? Fuck that. Wonder how I'll watch it (or if anybody has a link, PM me).

Established franchises are automatically adaptations under the screenplay categories, as are sequels. Moronic.

Technically all films for best picture must have debuted on 35mm, I imagine lots of them didn't.

Oh wow.

The franchise and 35mm debut are especially idiotic. Who cares on which format the movie debuted. Academy should seriously freshen up those old rules...

That's all I was referring to. I'm not saying he's not a great actor. I'm just saying, this is a pretty perfect storm for him - one that I can see agents will try to exploit in the future for THEIR clients.

The Wind Rises inevitably losing Best Animated Feature is going to be such a crime. There's no way they're not giving it to Frozen, though.

Just got done watching Her. So good. I'd love to see it win Best Picture, but I doubt that's going to happen. Writing on the wall seems to be there for 12 Years a Slave. Too much backlash for Wolf of Wall Street, and American Hustle has the look of this year's "movie with tons of nominations but very few wins." It's interesting though that most of the major films have something strong going for them but also have strong reasons why they wouldn't win. I suspect the voting is going to be much more split this year than usual.

Gravity should win everything technical (including cinematography), but none of the acting or best picture awards.

Wasn't The Wolf of Wall Street Paramount's first digital-only distribution? I know that it was shot mostly in 35mm, but I don't think it even had a 35mm print.

Actually, they've changed it, not sure how recently, this is the current rules:

feature length (defined as over 40 minutes),

publicly exhibited by means of 35mm or 70mm film, or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels, source image format conforming to ST 428-1:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master – Image Characteristics; image compression conforming to ISO/IEC 15444-1 (JPEG 2000), and image and sound file formats suitable for exhibition in commercial Digital Cinema sites.

The audio in a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is typically 5.1 or 7.1 channels of discrete audio and these are the preferred audio configurations. The minimum for a non-mono configuration of the audio shall be three channels as Left, Center, Right (a Left/Right configuration is not acceptable in a theatrical environment).

The audio data shall be formatted in conformance with ST 428-2:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master – Audio Characteristics and ST 428-3:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master – Audio Channel Mapping and Channel Labeling.
for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County,
for a qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days,
advertised and exploited during their Los Angeles County qualifying run customary to industry practice, and
within the Awards year deadlines specified in Rule Three.

Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category. This includes broadcast and cable television as well as home video and Internet transmission. Motion pictures released in such non-theatrical media on or after the first day of their Los Angeles County qualifying run remain eligible. Also, ten minutes or ten percent of the running time of a film, whichever is shorter, may be shown in a nontheatrical medium prior to the film’s qualifying run.
Eligibility is contingent on the receipt by the Academy of the following information on Official Screen Credits forms, available on the Academy’s website, to be signed by the film’s producer or distributor (unless waived by the Academy), which shall include:

full, complete and authentic credits,
the name of the Los Angeles County theater where the film has played, and
the dates of the Los Angeles County qualifying run.

Eligibility for all awards shall first be determined by credits as they appear on the screen and/or as certified to the Academy by the producing companies, but final determination in any event shall be made by the Academy. The Academy shall not be bound by any contract or agreement relating to the sharing or giving of credit and reserves the right to make its own determination of credit for purposes of Awards consideration.
In the event of any dispute concerning credits, the Academy reserves the right to declare any achievement ineligible or, alternatively, to reject all claims to credit, list credits as being in controversy and withhold any award until the dispute is resolved.
The alteration of an achievement by changing a picture from the version shown in Los Angeles County, upon which eligibility is based, shall subject such achievement to the risk of being declared ineligible by the Board of Governors.
Motion pictures from all countries shall be eligible for the annual awards listed in Rule One Paragraph 3, as long as they satisfy the requirements of the other applicable rules, and contain English-language subtitles if released in a foreign language.
Exceptions to the eligibility requirements and methods of qualifying listed in Rules Two and Three appear in the Special Rules for the Animated Feature Film award (see Rule Seven), the Documentary awards (see Rule Eleven), the Foreign Language Film award (see Rule Thirteen), the Music awards (see Rule Fifteen), and the Short Film awards (see Rule Nineteen).

Is this shit on tv already? I'm going to rely on you for my news GAF because I can't watch 4+ hours of shit for like 30 minutes of actual awards.

Jennifer Lawrence's acting in every clip I've seen from American Hustle was beyond fucking terrible. How she's nominated is bewildering.

She's actually one of the best parts of the movie, and I'm not even a big JLaw fan.

That said, it would be insane for her to win an Oscar even without the competition this year.

JLaw in AH seems like a little girl in mommy's shoes and lipstick. "Aw, that's cute, she's acting like a much older person!", but she never seems like the real thing. It feels like a SNL gag, I never actually believe she's that woman, living in that house, with that guy, behaving that way.

Yep and it kind of bugged me as it went on.

Amy Adams felt like the one who was trying to tie it altogether and held down the movie the most.

I liked her a lot more in Silver Linings, except that cringe-worthy scene where she bursts into the house, rattles off a bunch of dialogue and then drinks someone's beer.

I dunno, I got the sense that's exactly what her character was supposed to be: someone who got married too young, had a kid too young, and has never really accepted the gravity of those situations since she's good at coercing others into providing for her. The performance never really bothered me like it has others, but I can see why it rubs people the wrong way.

Nebraska feels so much like the Academy is screaming "Look, we care about smaller movies too!".

Just like Beasts of the Southern Wild last year.

I loved seeing Eli and Richard Harrow in AH so much, but it was a boring movie

Best scenes were with Louis ck and the one where bale meets Deniro
