9 Songs

So this awesome movie came out in Dallas today. It features concert footage from such great musical talents as Super Furry Animals (!), Primal Scream, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The movie's not supposed to be too great - neither is the concert footage - and it's supposedly quite sexually graphic, with a money shot and everything.

Anyway, I'm obligated to see the film. Michael Winterbottom is a cool guy, the lead actress is quite pretty, and we all know how I feel about SFA.

Enjoy the four-second clips of bands playing music and censored sex scenes. Thank you.

They sure do! What an awful, miserable band: making fantastic music for over a decade and not once pleasing MikeTroglodyteWithAUnibrow.

So glad you had much to contribute to the disccusion of the movie.

You know who else suck?

Primal Scream and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Just fucking terrible all around. You'd have to be pretty ignorant to enjoy their music.

You'd have to be pretty ignorant to enter a thread about a movie and attack bands you've no knowledge of in an attempt to bait someone who's your superior in every facet of taste imaginable.

I'll go in with extremely low expectations and the foreknowledge that the movie is only 65 minutes long and that I wasn't promised anything other than an experiment. It was less than a year ago that I wasted $8 on The Brown Bunny; I think I can handle this.

:lol @ Mike_Works

I guess enjoy bell woods can only dish out but has a hard time taking it back.

I caught a sneak preview of this last week (opened today in Seattle), I found it to be a wonderful film experiment, but at 69 minutes of sex and music, it's much too short to really develop a connection with the characters.

What a novelty piece, seriously. Porn interspersed with shitty music, I expected more from Winterbottom (no, I haven't seen it and the review don't exactly encourage me to do so).

Why not just rent a porno and listen to your favorite music whilst watching said porno?

Fwtw, SFA don't suck...but they're an acquired taste, and I'm not too sure about the new album...

Because this movie isn't necessarily just a porno. I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment, but distantmantra appears to have gleaned more from the film than just "It was a movie full of hot sex and music."

(And Love Kraft is really awesome.)

The movie is far from anything special. It's a porno concealed under a pompous 'arthouse' label so suited middle age execs can pretend to be participating in some moving cultural experience when they are really going to watch a guy and girl get it on. Stop kidding yourself, just go download some good old porn off the internet and give 9 songs a miss.

Oh, I found it pretty transparent. It is nothing special, but I found the concept novel enough to give it a go. The only reason I went was because I knew the movie wasn't long.

It's hard to find much beauty in a woman sucking the testicles of a man with simian facial characterestics, and then watching him unload all over his stomach. But you know, there weren't too many people in there looking for a cultural experience. I saw many lonely old men scattered about the theater. I still thought she was pretty, though.

The dependence on concert footage was interesting, I thought. I really don't recommend paying to see 9 Songs if you're a fan of any of the bands, though. There's really no point.

Michael Winterbottom is one of my favorite directors. But I think I'll wait for video for this one.

God, his next movie sounds so good, though. Reunited with Steve Coogan in an unofficial follow-up to 24 Hour Party People? Sign me up.

And yeah, SFA really suck. Bands that tackle every musical genre imaginable and still maintain their own identity are fucking worthless.

it's a pretty horrible film and wasn't worth the 9.50.

it did have some cool artsy cinematography but other then that, complete shit.

i guess its worth a rental if you have netflix.

i'm bitter since i paid 9.50 and went out of my way to see the movie.

A friend saw it at Sundance. He said there were tons of walkouts and gasps from the frou frous in the audience.

I'm very intrigued by the film. I did Winterbottom quite a bit and don't mind dishing out $10 to ensure that more edgy, experimental flicks get screened in theaters.

Thanks for reminding me to check it out this week. My now diminished expectations will probably make for a better expereience.
