A cure for the modern gaming blues..

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
*Disclaimer: This thread is not for you if you fall under these categories
1. Are a graphics whore and cannot play anything but gorgeous games. Some of these games look fantastic when scaled up to 4x-6x but it's not HDR and modern Textures.
2. Are happy or at least satisfied with the current state of gaming. I and others who think like me believe that Most of all of modern Gaming is Shit.
3. Are lazy to learn

For the last few weeks I have set up RetroBat (free PC download) and a bunch of emulators and Roms for my PC. I am having a blast just playing all of these games that are 10, 20, some even 30 years old. These games were made before Corporations took over gaming, Lazy DLC, Lazy remakes, etc. Games in these days had to succeed on their own merit and it surely shows. Games from the Xbox 360>PS3>PS2>PSX>N64>ARcade>PC Engine>etc etc etc. Yes I am talking aboout Emulation but it has came a long way since I last dabbled in it. Some of the games on Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, Etc look just as good as modern games when you upscale their internal resolution to 4x-6x for even the graphic whores out there. There is just so much free entertainment if you take the time to find the older games that interest you. I got to be honest in the last 3 years even with my new PC, I have only bought 4 games that were made in that time frame. Most of trhe games I play are 5+ years or longer because the quality seems that much better. Sure some of the games are down right fugly on modern displays but if you care about gameplay over verything else you can find Thousands of hours of entertainment and not spend a dime. I am turned off by modern games with their Political views, shovineg DLC and microtransactions down our throats, Unfinished releases that count on patches, Just the Sheer lack of new High quality title releases per year has dropped to the toilet.

You tired of Modern Gaming and Want a solution: I got a challenge for you. Seek out some older games and stick to them for a week and then come back to current game releases. Outside of graphics (Not even in all cases) you will notice that modern games have dropped in quality and features from their older counter parts. You can do this on even weak PC's or even on the Series X or S. Go on Youtube and watch some videos On how to set it up and in No time you will be in gaming heaven. If your too lazy to try this, then your doing yourself a diservice.

Easy Setup and Free:
Download Retrobat
Vimm's Lair has been around for year and host thousands of retro games for free to download. There are also many other download hosting sites.

If your tired and disgusted with modern gaming, This is the way.

Yeah, I love my old games. I still play plenty of modern stuff, but I know I can always fall back and often do on my classic favorites. Many titles will always be my favorites of all time, and I can always jump in and enjoy them and that's one of the reasons I love them so much. Timeless.

I am currently playing through Deus Ex on the Steam Deck, on the side I play the Sonic Unleashed decomp on the Deck, after these I might start a playtrhough of Mario Sunshine with a 60fps and widescreen mod (never tried these)... also on the Deck...

I am way ahead of you :messenger_grinning_sweat:

the Steam Deck is such a perfect system if you want to do this kinda stuff. with the touch pads and the comprehensive controller settings of Steam even old PC games with no controller support are no issue... and because you can play in bed, pick it up for short sessions while having something running on TV in the back, it's perfect for retro games, which will also look great on the smaller screen

I dont do emulation. There are enough retro games for me on pc, I am preparing a list that I want to play.

Currently happy with modern gaming, but planning to seek out old Japanese games that have been remastered on pc once I have had enough.

A lot of modern Japanese games also give a flavour of retro games, so going that route also works.

Learned they sell USB Wii infrared sensors that can connect to pc. Then the Wii controllers can just pair to my PC via bluetooth. I was shocked at how simple it was. Sin and Punishment: Star Successor looks so good in 4K.

Okay, but with that premise, modern games are also free, pirate hat on and off you go...
If you want to play the old games legally on original hardware, you're embarking on a sometimes expensive journey, but it's still worth it.
Personally I'm not a fan of upscaling in retro games either, especially everything that came before the Xbox / DC was simply made for CRT screens and should be played on them.

A good tip to get you to finish some game would be to quit buying new games.

It's fun to buy but I found more joy into playing the actual games I already owned for so long! Disconnect from any multimedia while you play. Your brain doesn't need any more distraction. You're already getting enough with the game itself.

It's not totally what the OT is on about but yeah..

there are completely wireless battery driven ones... no need to connect anything to the PC.

these aren't sensors, they are 6 infra red LEDs, and that's it... 3 on each side. there's no sensing happening

I know at least some of those fit my description, but I don't consider myself shit despite liking you. Also not very electric lizard-like, but I'm lazy though.

Animal well
That game was like a an adrenaline shot into my old gamer heart. It reminded me why I love games and it was basically a love letter to many of the games I grew up with. If the developer doesn't make more I'm going to drag him to The Hague for crimes against humanity.

I just boot up my old CRT TV, and flick a coin between OG Xbox, PS2 and the Cube.
Halo CE, Halo 2 online (mod), Splinter Cell trilogy, Ghost Recon 1 and Island Thunder, Hunter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (don't judge me, its fucking fun)
Silent Hill 2, Burnout 2, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2-3, God of War 1-2, SSX Tricky, Time Splitters.
Mario Sunshine, Metroid, Pickmin, Viewtiful Joe, Rogue Squadron, Resident Evil, Luigis Mansion.
It's like having a shower, it just cleanses the filth away and reminds me of when people tried.

If feeling a little risky, I'll boot up 1 of my two 360s dependant on the game i'm playing because I still have one with the original "blades" menu and refuse to update it and play things like Condemned etc.
Nothing post kinect, that's the exact singular moment xbox shit the bed.

Totally with you OP.

I am not making this a big thing though, I simply don't really care and ignore 99% of modern releases, and pick the few ones that check the right boxes. And otherwise, I do spend a lot of time on older consoles yes. No emulation though, as far as I am concerned.

Just enjoy the games how you like them and ignore the rest.

I'm playing older games anyway with mods like the Fallout's and Dishonored's and using new total conversion mods like Fallout London so i'm already doing it, there a few new games i'm interested in but not many, Atomfall, The Blood of Dawnwalker and Judas but that's it really, and hopefully Doom

I am absolutely a graphics whore, and I am generally satisfied with the current state of gaming, but I'm never too lazy to learn and I love me some emulation. I appreciate the thread, because I have all these emulators on my PC and have never heard of Retrobat, and this seems like a great front end to consolidate them all.

Maybe I'm just Simple Jack, but when there's too much detail in a game environment my brain shuts out like 99% of it anyways. So it all fades into the background anyways. Or conversely I see crappy assets that look out of place, or stuff that's clearly been copy/pasted 500 times, and it is distracting.

This is why I love the way SNES games look, like Zelda. Simple and effective, but gets everything it needs to across.

Duuuuuuude... Lol.
There is free entertainment if you do not want to pirate. Many companies are no longer existent so their properties are free to use. Also Mame has thousands of free games that have been released for public use. You do not have to pirate but I do not have a morale compass against it so to each their own.

End of the day you can't even get a decent soccer game these days, let alone A "Blur"/Motorstorm" like game, so most definitely gaming isn't what it used to be, you might get lucky with a once in a blue moon entry like Robocop.....

Gaming has become Corporate and corporate does not like to gamble with original games and original ideas. They chase trends and always stick to the old formulas until it no longer works.

Kodi+IAGL Addon + Retroarch is all you need. I have this setup on every pc and tv in my house. Just launch kodi, use the IAGL addon to find a rom, any rom up to Wii. Kodi will download the rom and launch it in retroarch with the correct core (or pick your own specific core). If you quit the game you're brought back into Kodi. No downloading individual roms and placing them in folders. I do need to setup syncthing so i can sync my saves on all my devices. And i use this shader setup to mimic crt https://forums.libretro.com/t/cyberlab-death-to-pixels-shader-preset-packs/35606
There's not as many big games releasing these days compared to previous gens. I find myself going back playing what i missed or the ones i really enjoyed more now than ever.
