Thoughts about the bloated sizes of modern games

Most sizes aren't too bad still. Plus my PS5 Pro now has 4TB (actually slightly less) of storage available.

I could easily get by with half of that.

The ballooning sizes of games does make me wonder what is being done and what could be done to reduce install sizes. I don't know that compression isn't being used to its fullest extent, but it does feel like it.

Storage being cheaper than it used to be isn't really the point. If a game doesn't need to be 100GB, should it be just because for half the price of a console you can get a big SSD?

Storage space isn’t the issue, data caps are. There’s a whole lot of people, at least here in the US, who are screwed by data caps by their ISPs. My ISP is a practical example. They’re the only one in town (for now) and up until last May they didn’t offer unlimited data as an add-on option. Before that, their limits were 1.5tb per month for 300mbps plans or lower and 2tb per month for their 500mbps plan.

Between streaming and gaming, we were always pushing the limit of the 2tb cap every month to the point where we were self rationing usage by the end of every month. Thankfully this is no longer an issue but I know many others who still have to manage draconian monthly data usage.

Blistering fast internet connection + no need to have 20 games installed at once like some people make this a non-factor to me.

As far as I am concerned, I simply don't buy games that are too big. It is not worth the annoyance.

It's a combination of genuine increases as a result of higher quality assets, sound etc and inefficiency. You can afford to be wasteful. There was a time and I believe I saw a documentary on this recently where you would have a team dedicated to just making the most use of the disc space. They would even order the information for it to be read as efficiently as possible.

Yeah, because when he said he played a 128bit song "from the Napster days" and couldnt tell the difference this was exactly what he was talking about. 🙄
I couldn't, none of my friends could and i bet you couldn't either.

But i guess we will never know. Maybe we are just old and our ears can't detect minor differences anymore.

That's why God invented cloud streaming after all.
