While I agree with Diablos' choice on this one, iTunes is useful to have around - it seems to do a better job on some copy-protected CDs.

LAME is just the mp3 encoding engine. 3.96.1 is the last 'release' version. there are also 3.97 alphas that offer up to 2x speed improvements in encoding but have 'untested' tweaks that might piss off the 1% of the population that spent half their lives tweaking the -alt-preset routines to death.

cdex should include LAME already, i don't remember which version though.

Yeah, CDex + Lame. Personally, I've found these are good settings between sound quality and file size. Your milage may vary.
