goddamit, Griese!
So, at my second, part-time job at Pizza Hut we hired a bunch of new people. I do basically everything there(phones, drive, cook, etc) since I've been there off and on for 3 years.
One of the people we hired is a 20 year old single mother. We hired her because she had really flexible hours, basically. We needed someone who could work some odd hours and not just a straight 4-10, or something like that.
Well, she's been here two weeks, been scheduled 10 days, and has left early 6 of those days. The reason? Her 8 month old baby is apparantly sick.
Now, while we all have sympathy for her, we don't like asking/making part-time employees scheduled until 9:00pm stay until 11:30 and close. Especially since they're mostly high-school kids, and we don't need them to quit, or we're really fucked.
I mean, we always ask them...but a lot of people have been there less than a month or two, so they feel obligated when a manager asks them to stay an extra few hours on a Wednesday. But we NEED someone there, or else the managers will be there till literally 4am.

So, today we were discussing firing her. I'm in the minority that wants to fire her. I feel awful for her and her baby, especially considering her age, but we can't have that here. We hired her for flexability, and she isn't that at all. She's unreliable.
Lots of people pointed out that she probably needs the money real bad...but the thing is, she's making fucking $5.15 an hour. She can get that anywhere. I was strongly pushing to fire her, and I was called an insensitive prick.

Am I that wrong?

Have you talked to her about her leaving early? At least give her a warning first, and if you're already short or tight with employees, start looking at applications for potentials to hire.

I had a similar problem when I worked at BlockBuster. I was a manager and this girl, 18, had just given birth. Anyways, she would miss shifts and I had to work in the morning by myself. It wasn't too bad since in the morning its not all that busy.

She would tell me how she and her boy-friend kept all their clothes in bags, slept on the floor at his parents house and bunch of sad things. I always felt bad telling her why she missed and did not want to fire her because I knew she needed the job. After a while I just could not take it anymore and gave her two choices:

a) find someone to take care of the baby while you're at work
b) find another job

She picked b.

actually, i'm working on this shy, boyfriendless, fine as fuck, extremely short girl. ARG. it's so odd to encounter hot females that are shy beyond words. I'm sure she's a freak in bed.

Well, the thing is, we've told her it's not good for her to do...but wtf can we say? "Next time you leave to see your 8 month old with a 103 degree fever, you're fired!"
And yeah, we have the now hiring sign up. We have a stack of applications to go through. But the fucker that's responsible for going through them is a crabby old man.

I agree with you; she said she was flexible, but she's not. Her actions are directly affecting the schedules of the others, and if they get fed up and quit, well that's not a good position for a pizza joint to be. She needs to be let go. All logic dictates to that course of action.

Hopefully she won't pull THIS card on your employers...

Give that crabby old man a wrap of bacon and I'll bet he'd be a bit more amicable.

The situation is tragic but, you have to think in the best interests of the company. Her not being able to keep her schedule is affecting others at the job. You can't run a tight ship like that. I been laid off twice in a year so I can feel her pain but, business is business and that's the end of that.

As far as hitting it. I would stay as far away as I could from even thinking that. If that doesn't scream conflit of interest I don't know what does. If you ever meet her somewhere outside the job after she was let go then she is fair game. But, right now is not the time or the place.
