There are a lot of reasons I'm starting this thread, and all of them seem to have come together this week. There has been some heated discussion in the Mod Forum lately about the atmosphere on this board with respect to women, and some of the topics and comments in the last couple of days have been particularly egregrious: women are crappy drivers, the "runaway bride" has big tits, women are only after money, etc. The final straw came this afternoon when I went to a meeting with my boss, and I heard stories about how she has been sexually harassed TO HER FACE for the last three weeks while on a business trip to Texas.

It seems to me -- and to others I've talked with -- that the attitude towards women on this board is pretty bad, especially lately. However, outside of the lone female voice on the moderation staff, I haven't heard very much from the other women on this board about how THEY feel. If most of the women here are OK with GAF as it currently operates, then it's stupid for me to be rigorously enforcing a standard which isn't desired. For all I know, you could be perfectly happy being "one of the guys" here...that's why I'm asking for your take.

So, women of GAF: Are you happy with this board? Does the posting of T&A pictures in various threads offend you? How about the dating advice threads? Do you feel comfortable and respected here? What changes would you suggest, if any?

I SERIOUSLY want to hear your opinions, and I would hope that the men of the forum would read this thread and pay attention. If you're a female, but don't want your gender to be known publicly, feel free to PM me and I will post your comments anonymously.

Male posters are also welcome to post their opinions, but be warned in advance that I will RUTHLESSLY keep this thread on-topic. Keep it constructive, or keep it to yourself.

Womanz of GAF pm me your troubles...I shall like the gentleman Iam, be there for you in this troubling time on Gaf.....unless you are a complete cow then pm Demi instead...j/k

I am kidding with the above post..... never really noticed all the sexaul harrassment until this thread...

As a male poster, I don't really feel respected. Can you make another sticky thread asking men about their thoughts and whether or not they're being treated the right way? Let's try and please everyone. Equal rights.

UGH.

So we can mock the dead, paraplegic, injured, certain races, and people who are otherwise out of the "norm"...but women are sacred ground? Sounds fair to me

In my personal experiance...

For some reason it seems like my personal hazing has ended. I don't get treated much different than any other poster (other than in picture threads) as long as I don't make all, or a good number my posts lemurcentric or draw attention to my gender and my appearance. For me personally, shit only goes down when I draw attention to the things that make me different from the majority of the Gaming-Age forums.

I have to adjust how I speak to people and what I talk about on Gaming-Age to make myself seem like just another regular poster. I can't talk about many of the things I'd like to talk about here because of the gender and age of the majority of GAF posters. I don't see that as a problem, it's just a minor frustration. If I have something person I want to talk about, I just know not to talk about it here.

As for T&A pictures, rude comments ect. ect... I don't care about T&A pictures in T&A threads. I don't like older guys, but in the GAYming Age and Women addition of Fap worthy pictures, half of the posts in the thread were made by people joking around, or posting things like "WTF. SICK." and pictures of fat chinese people and shit. That's not cool, people don't spam your T&A threads, so don't spam the Guy version of those threads.

I don't say much about what bothers me though. I just try to not let it bother me. This place has it's redeeming qualities and just a handful of intelligent, kind, thoughtful posters can make up for 20 random idiot posters.

This is a Gaming Forum, ran and occupied mostly by horny guys ages 16-40. As long as that's the case it's unrealistic of me to complain and actually expect something to change.

If it bothered me that much, I'd leave.

Guys are all talk.
I'm sure, in 'real life', most guys here treat women with respect. And, who knows, many are probably really romantic too.

It's just that, when you have a group of guys together, whether it be in person or on the internet, there's going to be an overflow of testosterone. Part of it is probably ego, but most of it is just for jokes.

I think this is actually a really good point that the mods need to weigh in their minds... EVERYTHING else gets trashed around here...EVERYTHING.

My good friend Mike Watt once told me,

"Men have an unspoken telepathy, a biological connection between male psyches. Whether they know each other or not, put a group of them together, always the same."

you dont go around saynig that kind of stuff about parapalegics do you?

Which is why it's a GAYming Age and Women Edition.

You don't have to click theads that you know will contain pictures of half naked men just as I don't have to click threads which I know will contain pictures of half naked girls. I'm not as insecure about that kind of shit though, so if it really bugs you that much just stay out of the line of fire. It's not hard. Hell, it's a lot easier than avoiding threads which will have t&a in them, because those pictures pop up when you least expect it in threads that you wouldn't expect.

"I'd stick my dick between her boobs."

Shit like that makes me a little bit uncomfortable, and shocks me as I'm sure it shocks some other people here. Male or Female. It doesn't get to me deeply though because it's not something that's deep enough to dwell on for any length of time, and again, it's almost all guys here. Shit like that is to expected, whether or not it's tolerated or shouldn't be tolerated is up to who the person with the most power is offended most. If talking like that is to not be tolerated I would think that there are reasons extending beyond the fact that it's offensive to (some)women, like promoting more intelligent discussion on the boards instead of 400 page jerk-off threads.

Those pics tend to be in threads that are clearly labelled about their content. :p

Is it that big of a deal? Do you watch sports? If you're not comfortable enough to see half-naked guys, there's really an issue there.

Hey, I'd love to see less "CHECK OUT THIS BITCH'S HUGE CANS!!!" threads. People are people, male, female, straight, gay, black, white, purple. Don't be a fucking jackass. You're not impressing anyone.

I don't have a problem with pictures of hot women. We should keep them. If necessary, I would be ok with balancing things out with hot pictures of men/dogs/cats/refridgerators.

That's how it should be. The mods don't have to be pointlessly altruistic knights in armor here. Women are a good subject for mocking, disapproval and stereotyping just like anything else on the Internet. Don't make an issue where there isn't one.

We don't have "Women should die" threads, we have "I don't know what to do about women" threads because people on this forum obviously want, need and respect them just like anything else. Honestly, this is just a really stupid thing to bring up. As someone already said, I didn't notice there was a problem at all until you brought it up yourself.

Something does need to be done about the homophobia and joke pictures in the gay threads, though. Even if the gay and female posters can tolerate it, it should be stopped just like unnecessary acronyms and catchphrases are being stopped.

I couldn't agree more. Now if Jinx and other mods have been recieving PMs from female posters complaining about the way people treat them on GAF, then that'd be one thing....I don't see a problem here.

Enough of this PC bullshit. If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Since it doesn't really bother anyone, then it shouldn't matter.

When you can post relatively anonymously your "true" personality or stuff you'd like to say tends to come out. The majority of people here are guys and the stuff that you read/see here is very common in groups of people mostly composed of guys. There has to be some limits but as far as stuff offending women.... what the hell do you expect? This is a forum full of guys from ages 10-60 years old...

That being said, are there any gaming forums where the majority of posters are female?

I've actually heard several guys say this, or a form of it in real life several times as I'm sure many of you here have too... why not expect it to be written on a forum?

I've also heard guys see a relatively cute chick in a wheelchair and actually say out lout the sort of stuff they want to do with them....

I think as long as people are relatively civil to each other here and don't write/post/link to stuff that's intentionally hurtful to a certain group of people then all bets are off.

If we start moderating too much then no one here can say anything and we might as well shut the forums down...

I agree with you to some degree...but I have also heard people say they hate "spics" in real life too, does that make it ok? I think there has to big a degree of control.. saying "man she is hot" is cool but "man I want to raw dog her in the ass" is wrong anywhere there are females present... even here in Japan :lol

Quality post that sums up my thoughts on the matter. Including the part about people being inappropriate in gay-themed threads. It's wrong and shouldnt be condoned.

p.s. :lol :lol @ I want to raw dog her in the ass.

You seem to have missed the part where it is bothering some.

The "I hate X" would fall into the
"I think as long as people are relatively civil to each other here and don't write/post/link to stuff that's intentionally hurtful to a certain group of people then all bets are off."
of my post.

If you attack a person or a certain group directly with malicious intentions then someone needs to bust you upside the head.

Regarding saying stuff like your raw dog comment, well, lets just say that here in Japan I've had women say much more explicit stuff to me than that (with a smile on their faces even)...
In a global environment like an internet forum standards of civility are different. That's why the mods have a pretty hard job...they need to temper their moderation of the group with a touch of "just how bad is this really".

BuddyC said:

You missed the part where they should get out of the kitchen if they can't take the heat.

At least show us the things they're complaining about so we know how severe this is. Not everyone can read every post in every thread on the board, mods included. It's highly probable that we're being stereotypical men and are missing the uncontrollable douchebaggery we're committing, but I really don't see it.

The few women who have talked with me about this have had a pretty strong opinion. However, since it's nowhere near a representative sample of all the women on the board, I started this thread to find out more information.

There have been some good comments made so far...but so far, I only see a response from one woman.

There have also been some really fucking trivial comments made so far, and it's no surprise who posted THOSE.

Why is always this way though? Why is it never if you can't stand being PC, or at least use a bit of common sense considering who else might be reading things on this forum, then get the fuck out of here?

Honestly? I'd rather those kinds of posters leave than those who can't understand something like that. It goes back to the whole idea of noise to signal ratio on this forum. While the fap threads are appropriately labeled and such, I think the general attitude around here is a bit discouraging, not just to women, but in general.

There's been one female reply to this thread. I had the same problem when I made the thread about females in videogames and women gamers.

I just think the internet hazes everyone and in gaf everyone takes stabs at everyone else, if I were to absolve women from that then I think that would be sexist.

I just wasted 5 minutes trying to figure out exactly how one would translate that "raw dog" comment into Japanese into an appropriate way...I'm sure there is a way to express such slang, I just don't know it...

Anyone know how to say it?

The one thing people have to remember is that the Internet does not allow for tone or any other clues that you might or might not be serious... people get offended at things that the writer meant to be funny..

I thought about that. I emailed a couple of girls about the forum discussion and asked them if any of my translations were right...They said no but wouldn't tell me exactly how to say it :lol

Man, look at what GAF has done, those girls are gonna think I'm a big perv!

gaf is an overwhelmingly male community. this is down to the subject matter. and it isn't going to change. rooting out the girly pictures and sexist chatter that are a basic feature (and imo a desirable feature) of overwhelmingly male communities for the comfort of a few female posters strikes me as grossly misguided. you can't run gaf as you'd run a gender-neutral real world situation, like a workplace -- gaf is neither neuter nor real.

For the record, we're just trying to keep the girly pictures in the girly pictures threads, so that, you know, if you're reading a thread about Mr. Driller at work you aren't suddenly like WHOA BARRAGE OF BARLEY CLOTHED GIRLS.

And this would help for those of us who browse at work.

I hate to sound like a prude, but would these upcoming changes address the swath of bikini-clad avatars? I like animated pictures of girls running as much as the next guy, but it can be somewhat embarassing to be reading a thread where the poster lineup looks like the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Like other people have said, I don't mind that sort of photos/behavior being on GAF, but I'd like to be able to avoid it if I choose.
