AAA abd blood abd gore. What cool action game can I play while the family is still awake?

I feel like 95% of all AAA high quality action games today are not suitable at all for a house with kids.

I'm currently playing Wuchang. It's a cool game but I really struggle to find a time slot to play it before family night time, unless I lock myself into the computer room. You can remove the gore in the settings but you still often walk around in a slaughterhouse with blood and corpses everywhere.

Watched a Ninja Gaiden 4 video. The action looks amazing but it makes Moonstone on the Amiga look tame.

What's the deal?

Edit, sorry for spelling errors. I'm frustrated…

Why is everything cool like different versions of Mortal Kombat??

Black Myth: Wukong.

Blood and gore is replaced by sparks.

Amazing game too. incredible boss fights all game long.

Get rid of your family then you can play as much blood abd gore games as you want
Thanks for the advice but I don't need such content for myself either. I grew up playing on the Commodore computers, been there, done that, blood and gore was the coolest thing ever when I was around 15 or whatever, 13-18 maybe. But I don't need it anymore. And with kids around it's just an obstacle in the way of my gaming interest.

I'd argue Starfield would have been a better game with a Fallout-like gore system.
I dont know how to say it any better than it sounds like you are just being a pussy about it. If you hit someone with a sword they SHOULD bleed heavy, or if you blast someone in the face with a shotgun and their head doesn't explode its just dumb. But what do I know, I'm just a fucking idiot. 🤷‍♂️

Action RPGs? even though some of them rated for 15+ or 18+, I always let children seeing these games cause they're pretty much like the original Harry Potter trilogy, there's nothing wrong them.

Stellar blade. Just choose the right outfit on the occasion. 😁
It's great but too gory at least in boss fights.

Regarding outfits, I draw mild tease art, the family have no issues with such content.
The problem is the blood, gore, decapitations etc. Back in the 80s it was just some red pixels, and a handful of games with real gore like Barbarian, Moonstone, Sword of Sodan. Today it's like everything need s to be a splatter movie. I don't get it.

I don't think you're an idiot and I don't think I'm a pussy about it. You probably just don't have kids near you when gaming. I can do that too when I lock myself into the computer room, but sometimes I want to game in the living room, preferably before midnight.
I was up til 3 in the morning last night to play Wuchang…
It's a problem.

Yeah like Hogwarts Legacy, good example! That would work. I played 15 hours it so but dropped it for some reason.

I played through FF7 Remake too. Maybe I should go back to Rebirth, I only just started it.

Steam Deck or Portal, stream your game to it, profit.
You can have kids cartoons on the TV and chill. Not as immersive but like you say beats sitting in the office 24 hours a day.
Yeah I have the Deck but as you say not as immersive. I just want to have some cool games for the living room. Games I can also play with the kids beside me, they like watching me play, we do that a lot. But the games output in the AAA space is seriously lacking.

As Represent. Represent. said Black Myth. That's perfect. It's not people and it's not gory and it looks amaaazing. I want more games like that!

I used to play Horizon Zero Dawn too. Robots and dinosaurs, my youngest one thought that was just about the coolest game he had ever seen lol. Unfortunately there were still bandit camps. I could've probably gone Schwarzenegger-True Lies: "But they were all bad…" but I just let him watch when I was out taking down machines.

Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart was awesome too, it was even localized for my country with Pixar level voice acting. Perfect for family gaming. One of my best family playthroughs in my whole life.

Action JRPGs are the same, I've no problem if children want to see/play these games, there're many of them.

Not sure what goes under that wide genre, could you give some examples?

They've seen me play some Elden Ring. When you deactivate blood it's fairly okay and when it's wolves and giants etc. But some boss fights are a no-no and some areas are gruesome.

In general I think it's alright when there isn't blood splurts and when it's monsters, not people. You're slaying monsters in Zelda too and they play those all the time.

This was a real shocker back in the day. As for the cover... wow.

Heh yup
True story. I once drew a picture at the age of 10 after playing it, with the legendary head chop move, which spiraled into sitting with my teachers and my parents talking about my "twisted violent mind".
I turned out okay, I think… But at the time it was too much for the adult world to turn those blocky sprites into real people with such violence. 🫣

So, you want to slice things up with swords and stuff, but don't want any blood to come out because you're too mature for that now?

Swords are cool but not gore. I'm just over it, I don't mean to sound condescending. I always deactivate blood when possible. Gore/blood, motion blur, screen shake, weapon bob. OFF

Yes, there are violent games not suited for kids. You know, the type of games where you don't shoot people in the face or slay them with a sword. There's also porn, which isn't suited for kids either.

But there's a ton of games suited for kids too, from sports or racing games to wholesome stuff like Astro Bot.

Yes, many units of this game were sold thanks to Maria Whittaker, but the game was great, had a great gameplay considering the average of 8 bits computer games:

I'm not sure many AAA games going for super realism are going to have you slicing people with swords and having rainbows spill out.

It's the best tbh. There is just some incompatibility issues when a big chunk of the industry seems to think blood and gore is the coolest thing ever. No wonder Nintendo just keeps on growing…
As a 41 year old, I still think video game gore is cool. Makes sense as someone that lived through the 80's and 90's when edginess and gore almost came with everything. It's wild how you mention the AAA has a lot of it, where I personally think it's weaker and less than it used to be and wish we'd go back to that, lol. Just different strokes for different folks.

Fortunately there are a number of titles you can enjoy that don't have gore, or it can be toggled. I just wish I could provide better answers that haven't already been said. To be honest looking for an action game means you're looking for violence, so to have a violent game without gore is slim pickings, lol.

Haha, Nintendo succeeds for a lot of reasons, and lack of gore isn't a big one.

There are kids games, but I want cool AAA action games, can be aimed at adults but still suitable for kids. Like Rift Apart, that was awesome.
If you know tons of them then please make a list! I need some recommendations.

Super realism is so not my wish!

Think Rift Apart (Pixar movie), Black Myth (fantasy creatures, sparks not blood), Final Fantasy 7 Remake (dark theme but still fairly okay), Hogwarts Legacy (Harry Potter's world), Spider-Man (comics super hero action).

Games I can enjoy myself that I can also play in the living room with the family around.

Last night I started playing Wuchang around 23:00, stopped 03:00. That's how it is. I don't like it.

Which platform(s)?
Anything really. But preferably PC, NSW2, PS5. In that order. Those are always connected to the TV.

Still have NSW1 plugged in occasionally because the kids have some saves and I have no clue how to move sub accounts to NSW2… But I rather not buy anything else there anymore. Same with Xbox Series, it's there but if it's possible I rather use the PC, don't feel like investing in it.

I started another playthrough of Rift Apart on PC, looks insane, but I've already gone through that so I don't sense the urge to do it again.

I'm considering Spider Man Remastered. I've only played Miles Morales. Okayish for kids at 10 and up?

Astral chain maybe?

Most action games have that because it sort of goes hand in hand.

Ninja gaiden 2 lets you replace the blood if you want. Think the limbs still come off though.

Add about a decade on me. I'm no Jack Thompson, I'm just a frustrated gamer dad really lol

I used to be obsessed about blood and gore on the C64 and Amiga, it's basically why you started a game like Moonstone.

But for me the "coolness" faded probably late 90s, early 00s maybe. I remember having fun plowing through zombies in Dead Rising but after that I was over it.

And today everything is an obstacle in the way of me playing in the living room.

Violence is fine. There is violence in Zelda. It's just the gore I don't need, I don't need heads and limbs flying and blood splurging all over the screen. No interest whatsoever in that.
Haha, Nintendo succeeds for a lot of reasons, and lack of gore isn't a big one.
I think it's very nice to know that you can play their absolute best games possibly even with a toddler in the room. Can't say that about the other platforms. For me they're an obvious choice for a gamer family.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning
Lots of action, but hyper-stylized visuals. More cartoonish than other ARPGs.

ReCore
Action platformer. No blood since you're fighting mechanoid creatures. Fun, but it gets tedious after a few hours.

South of Midnight?
I haven't played this, but it looks like an action game devoid of gore.

South of Midnight is on Gamepass, I could definitely try that, thanks 👌

How old are your kids? I've seen and played bloody games since I could hold a controller/play a keyboard, same with movies. If they're in 1st grade and above, then you should let them watch/play.

A few suggestions out of my mind, which would depend on your genre preferences:

PS5:
  • PS Plus Extra (this subscription has a ton of great games like several of the ones listed below)
  • Astro Bot
  • Astro's Playroom (free and preinstalled in the console, very short but fun)
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure
  • If you liked Rift Apart you can also get Ratchet & Clank (PS4 game released in 2016, visuals won't be as top tier but it's a good game that must still look good and now must be super cheap)
  • LocoRoco Remastered
  • LocoRoco 2 Remastered
  • Gravity Rush Remastered
  • Gravity Rush 2
  • Parappa the Rapper Remastered
  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits
  • Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, and after it Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • EA FC (if you like football / soccer), MLB (if you like baseball), Madden NFL (if you like American football), etc
  • Gran Turismo 7 if you love the cars culture and want a good challenge (it has a free demo called "My First Gran Turismo")
  • Wipeout Omega Collection (several top futuristic arcade racers remade or remastered)
PS5/PC/in some cases Switch 2 (I suggest PS5 to ensure optimal performance etc):
  • Street Fighter 6
  • Monster Hunder Wilds
  • Mega Man 11
  • Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 & 2
  • Sonic Mania Plus (or Sonic Mania)
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (features Crash Bandicoot 1-3)
  • Crash Bandicoot 4
  • Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
  • Guacamelee!
  • Hohokum
  • Balatro
  • Tetris Effect (best version of the classic puzzle)
NSW2: basically the main stuff:
  • Mario Odyssey
  • Mario Wonder
  • Metroid Dread (it's the best selling one in the series)
  • Captain Toad
  • Zelda BotW + TotK
  • Animal Crossing New Horizons
  • Splatoon 3
  • DK Bananza
  • Mario Kart World, Mario Kart 8
  • Super Smash Bros Ultimate
I'm considering Spider Man Remastered. I've only played Miles Morales. Okayish for kids at 10 and up?
Yes, I'd get Spider-Man Remastered and after its sequel Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Consider that anything related to Marvel now it's also Disney. So yes, there will be fights, some bad guys shooting and maybe some blood but pretty light/mild stuff, no frequent blood, no gore, you won't be massively shoting or slashing guys etc.

As general rule anything coming from Nintendo/Disney(which includes Star Wars and Marvel) is going to be perfectly ok for a 10 years old -and up- kid, like any Star Wars or Spider-Man movie.

As general idea, I suggest to check the age ratings ESRB (USA)/PEGI (EU)/USK(Germany). You can check any game in their websites, but the rating of the games is also specified in their boxes or digital store pages.

In this case it's ESRB T (Teens and up) and mentions to feature: "Blood, Drug Reference, Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, Violence". I'd say games rated as T are ok for 10/11 years old kids. The ESRB rating you should avoid is the one rated as M (for mature) or the ultra rate AO (adults only).

Regarding PEGI, I'd say PEGI 12 (recommended for 12 years old and above) and generally PEGI 16 (recommended for 16 years old and above) are ok for a 10-11 years old kid even in theory PEGI 12 and PEGI 16 aren't recommended for a 10 years old kid.

Basically regarding violence PEGI splits it in this way:
  • PEGI 7: Super mild and cartoonish, non realistic violence
  • PEGI 12: Very light/cartoonish violence against or not against humans (robots, monsters, zombies, aliens)
  • PEGI 16: Light/medium violence againt humans, little blood
  • PEGI 18: Extreme violence against humans (gore, sliced people), tons of blood
As you can see these age ratings are pretty strict, a bit too strict. As reference, the level of violence in Spider-Man Remastered is the same than in Miles Morales and they rated it like this:

USK is basically the German version of PEGI, the same but totally banning any nazi related content. This is the reason of why recent videogames that includes nazis normally modify swastikas and related stuff.

This. I am not squeamish but I just find all that excess of violence tasteless.

Japanese action RPGs with anime aesthetics tend to be bloodless: Zenless Zone Zero, the Ys series, Granblue Fantasy Relink, the Mana games are a few to start with.

Youngest one is 10. I too started early, C64, but the violence back then can't be compared to a violent game today.

Look at Ninja Gaiden 4 and compare to Ninja Gaiden 1 on NES.

I would have no issues playing NES NG1 in the living room.
NG4 though…

I mean there are very few games as bloody as NG4 most triple A games are very HR safe, even so, if they're 10, I believe they should be fine. I can guarantee you they're watching worse stuff in school. Best to be the ones to show them cool stuff.

NG4 was an extreme example I know. But most action games where you have a sword now features some sort of decapitation or sword through chest finisher move.

If there is no blood it gets as brutal as your imagination makes it. I remember Soul Calibur and Astaroth swinging the giant axe so it stuck in the head in his opponent in a move and lifting them up with the axe using as a throw… but there was no blood at least.

As said I think it can be fine if it's fantasy creatures like in Black Myth. But when it's humans and the blood is gushing like fountains it's difficult to ignore the brutality. I don't want to use my own kids to research if it's bad at young ages.

"I want to shoot people and cut them apart, but I just don't like violence."

????

The problem isn't so much the buckets of blood, but the tone-deaf nature of modern games. It comes off as hokey, spiteful, and over-the-top. But at some point, as I get older, I realize that sanitizing violence and turning it into a cartoon is more harmful in the long run than having realistic-ish response mechanics. It's not so much the violence as the reason for the violence and how it's framed. That's what's harmful, in my opinion. Having splashes of blood when you shoot a Locust in Gears of War, or even chainsawing one clean in half, doesn't evoke a squick because there's no question that your characters are just fighting a dirty, brutal battle for survival - and the foes totally deserve it.

Whereas Dead Island 2 is just a over-the-top gore festival that turns my stomach. Not because of its realistic violence (because I love me some good old fashioned virtual, very-not-real violence), but because of the mean, nasty tone of it all. It revels in brutality and makes a nasty joke of it. Really bad for anyone, kid or adult. I felt dirty and ashamed after playing it in a five-hour marathon. Icky. Everything about it was just so nasty, cynical, and gross.

If you want some good old-fashioned action sans blood, go back in time. Kill.Switch is a balls-to-the-wall thrill ride without a single drop of blood. Soul Calibur is a great example. The hit-flashes in Winback are surprisingly responsive and satisfying in lieu of bloodshed.

Blood option in modern games? I don't know. I don't really play AAA games anymore. I really don't.

EDIT: The biggest crime I found in that NG4 footage is that it doesn't look like NG at freaking ALL. God, I hate Platinum Games.
