Aaron Hernandez comitted suicide in prison Wednesday morning, the Department of Correction said.

According to a statement for the Department of Correction, the former New England Patriot star was discovered hanging in his cell at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley Massachusetts at approximately 3:05 a.m.

”Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell ina general population unit," the statement said. ”Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bedsheet that he attached to his cell window. Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items."

State Police are investigating and his family has been notified.

Hernandez's suicide comes five days after he was acquitted of murdering two men in Boston in 2012. However, it was still serving a life wihtout parole sentence for murdering Odin L. Lloyd in North Attleborough in 2013.

I mean.. I guess I expected him to do it eventually, but he also just got acquitted on the other set of murders he was charged for?

Sounds like he had help. Usually it's pretty hard for high profile inmates to get anything in their cell that would let them commit suicide. Maybe his gang was involved.

Surprising considering he seemed really relieved he was just acquitted for those murders during his last trial.

Wonder if he was on suicide watch?

Good riddance? The guy killed multiple people yet I see sympathy for him here. I don't see how this is any different from the manhunt guy who killed himself yesterday.

There was a photo of his kid crying because she wanted to see him and him blowing her kisses.... the entire story was just so sad. He had everything and threw it all away.

I would imagine that all the prisoners get bed sheets. And even if he was acquitted for the latest set of murders, he was still in prison for life considering the other shooting he was involved in.

Bed sheets...getting acquitted for a murder and yet he remains in prison forever. That's a bleak out look. I can see why he did it.

I don't think anyone is feeling sorry for him per se.

More that the dude had a very unique talent and opportunity, wasted it, and then just ended it.

Plus, even as a murderer, people did love him--family. They will be hurt as well.

His life is a textbook tragedy.

I wonder if anything was going on in that prison to make him want to commit suicide, or simply the weight of what he'd done, or the burden of knowing he would never be free again.

I'm not going to say I'm sad to see him go, but I hope he was able to at least reckon with the gravity of what he'd done to Odin Lloyd (and possibly others).

I work in the town where he made a name for himself (on the local level) and his name is always big news around here, this will send shock waves around town.

bad people can have tragic stories as well. We knew aaron hernandez given his public position, both before and after his murders. From humble beginnings, to troubled superstar in college, to sliding in the draft due to those troubles, and seeming redemption after becoming a star. All of that came crashing down over night and we learned just how terrible he truly was.

He got off too easy. I'm sure there were signs, but the prisons in this country are great at giving CO's power trips and do next to nothing for mental health issues.

There is more to this story, the guy had a legit shot of getting out after the double murder acquittal.

As a Gator fan, it's so weird watching the 2009 and especially 2008 SEC Championship and hearing commentators gush over his skills. The man was so talented, and you'd hear commentators going, "He's gonna be someone big."

He turned out to be that, all right, just not in the way I was expecting. He really disgraced himself for doing what he did.

My wife refuses to believe it was sucicide, but he died alone in a cell with it locked and items shoved from inside the cell to try to prevent it from opening.

The acquittal last week was literally the first piece of good news this guy has gotten in almost four years. It was a massive win. It meant he now actually had a shot at getting out of jail.

But now he kills himself? I don't understand this one.
