AC: Unity's devs: 60FPS doesn't look real and is less cinematic, 30FPS feels better

Didn't the hobbit run at some crazy high fps? I remember my friends saying that it just felt weird. I never had the chance to go see it for myself.

It ran at 48fps. It looked strange when you first see it but I was in love with it by the end of the movie and wish it was an option in more movies.

But that'd result in downgraded visuals -> Another shitstorm. ERMAGURD WATCH_DOGS DOWNGRADE NOOO

And now they chose to keep the visual fidelity, at the cost of resolution and framerate -> Shitstorm.

Gamers just can't be pleased, ever. lol

I don't have a problem with this game being 30fps (unless it's also 30 on PC), but what you said would only be a problem if they lied about the visuals. You don't just decide for 60fps at the last moment, it's someting you build your game around. So, if they showed how the game looked at 60fps from the start, there would be no downgrade.

They were the ones that showed us the game how it looks like and said they were aiming for 60 (I always thought that was bs, but some people might have taken their word for it).

It's gamers that are at fault for not being pleased with lies? Seriously?

Again, I really don't have a problem with this game running at 30fps on consoles (and never ever assumed it wouldn't), but stop blaming the consumer for not liking being lied to when it comes to the shit they spend their hard worked money on.

Spoiled brats, seriously?

I don't see a problem with this.

I do agree that 30fps feels more cinematic than 60fps. Main reason why movies lock their frame rate below 30 and soap operas stay at 60 for 60hz, 50 for 50hz.

This generation of gamers act too much like spoiled brats who want everything their own way and not the director's way in which the game is intended to be played and seen.

First, what even "cinematic" means? Usually you call a game cinematic when you have a game with well executed cutscenes and voice acting and stuff like that, not when the framerate is poor. Ironically MGS has always been called "cinematic" and now it's 60fps.

And second, no, that isn't the main reason movies are done below 30 and soap operas are 60. The real reasons comes from the history of the film technology.

An average person can take in the complete visual field from the eye at the rate of 70-71 times per seconds, for complete visual recognition and differentiation.

Taking into account that the TV/Display scene doesn't fill the complete field of view in a binocular vision and every frame in a game would be at continuity from the previous frame (retaining most objects to be the same on the screen)..mostly the human eyes can see upto more than 3x or 4x the frames (3x or 4x of 70-71 times) on a TV/Display_screen.

So AC Unity states they are going 900p for parity's sake, 30 FPS because it feels better, and no women because they are too hard to program.
Man this game is going to bomb so bad...

Your post would resonate more if Ubisoft didn't do this type of thing for almost every game that came out during last generation. It's not a matter of being insatiable. The problem is Ubisoft talks around problems like these every time without fail.

And by the way, Watch_Dogs was downgraded. They found those E3 settings buried in the game.

I dont think they lied when they said they're aiming for 60. They did, and it didnt work out the way they wanted it to. So there's no real reason for anyone to be disappointed. As you said, it was rather obvious they wouldnt be able to hit it anyways.

Yeah, I know that. But if they would've decided to pursue 60fps for ACU - that one would've been downgraded as well. And I feel like there would've been a very similar reaction to the Watch_Dogs fiasco.

AC doesn't really need to be 60fps.

It's actually good decision for them - the game looks really shiny and VAST majority of AC players will not care at all.

Full disclosure - I am not 30fps advocate and dislike it as much as any of you. It's just a better option for them. The problem is their PR

They're aren't making a movie, they're making a videogame. It says something about you as a developer when you value 30fps over 60fps because it makes your game look more cinematic.

This cinematic PR line needs to die.

You don't run a game on (4-5k res) nitrate film stock behind a lantern shutter. Its a digital image that's only recently getting per object motion blur (most of the time not).

30 FPS on CGI is janky, not "cinematic".

Go shovel your horseshit somewhere else already.

This game was already not that interesting to me to begin with... yet I was considering giving it a shot.

Not anymore. It just has a weird vibe around it with all the bad publicity it has gotten. Yuck. It got tarnished thanks to all the dumb yapping. Pass.

They've traded one fiasco for another via their usual awful PR.

"It's like when people start asking about resolution. Is it the number of the quality of the pixels that you want? If the game looks gorgeous, who cares about the number?"

Haha what the fuck really?

This game has dropped off my radar completely now. Im fine with 30 fps. Im not fine with shitty pr and crap excuses.

Oh my god YOU ARE SO RIGHT. I never thought of it this way. This really does say a LOT about their perception of the game and how they value its gameplay side.

Please just say you don't have the resources. We get it, you had to pick and you picked graphical intensity. Just don't keep bullshitting everyone every single time.

Assassin's Creed has had shallow gameplay since, like, forever. It can be fun but it's hard to ignore entry after entry.

I have to agree with them. I dislike games at 60fps unless they are fast-moving/racing games. I do think it makes everything look cheaper like a soap opera. Now, on with the witch-burning :)

Consoles arent powerful enough for the game, and now they're trying to justify it somehow.

The game was made with consoles in mind. They need to be more considerate of the hardware they're developing for, instead of trying to put a square block in a round hole. That's why they're in this position of sub 1080 games running 30fps. Don't blame the hardware, blame your design choices.

I honestly don't mind the "looks more like a film" comment. I get it, and, that's fine. I haven't played a single AC in anything higher than 30, and, I don't need it to be.

But, if you want to emulate film, you better have a story worthy of it. And, AC, much as I've loved the franchise, has always had an awfully silly story.

You're letting a separate form of media inform your opinions on another form of media. The "soap opera" thing has no actual relevance to this conversation. You think Ground Zeroes has the look of a soap opera?

I'll never understand people wanting something to fail. You can dislike something/someone without wishing that failure comes down on them.
I just want it to bomb in reviews because they do not deserve any more money (bonuses) for all the stuff they are pulling.
