AC: Unity's devs: 60FPS doesn't look real and is less cinematic, 30FPS feels better

There is something oddly unrealistic about that fluidity of motion to me. I think it's because in real life, you can't smoothly sweep your field of vision, you stagger your vision by focusing on many specific points, and 30fps is a more staggering/juddery aesthetic. However, in no way would I consider it to feel better.

This is why 60fps with good motion blur that accurately approximates vision blur is the best. Good motion blur is, unfortunately, still pretty rare in games.

Is all of the cursing really justified? I would imagine it's against Neogaf rules, no?
That's sweet, but no.

Ubi straight up needs new PR people.
Never been more appropriate.

You'll-be-soft! Get it?!?!

There must be something lost in translation (their HQ is in France, right?). No way a company can continue to say stuff that makes them look stupid time and time again.

It has to be like that time where that Japanese dev/artist made a joke and everyone got on his ass for it when he meant no harm.

30fps makes complete sense. It allows them to push the limits of everything to the maximum - like the resolu...wait.

All right PR people, time to really step into it. Here's your frame: we started with 60 FPS but people grew tired of it because <reasons>, therefore we put in more development effort and discovered the superior 30 FPS technique. That's twice the time to fully appreciate each frame! Say goodbye to that cheesy soap opera look and prepare for unmatched immersion. "We tried going back to 60 and could barely tolerate it. The drop in fidelity was unacceptable. Things just felt more and more fake as we lowered the frame time". Quality over quantity, etc etc.

If you focus on your finger and move your hand side to side, you can have a pretty smooth pan, although out of focus.

It's flat out offensive that they've got the nerve to say 30fps lets them "push everything to the maximum" when they just announced that they're holding back the PS4 version of Unity to maintain parity. Absolute bullshit; fuck off Ubisoft.

Jesus, this week's meeting at Ubi Montreal is going to be tough. The reply of Amancio really just confirms to me that for this kind of game Creative Directors shouldn't really make interviews. The same thing happened with The Order. At least when it comes to technical stuff. I bet that the programmers at the development team would love to make the game 1080p 60FPS, but they clearly got a priority list. The justification shouldn't come from the guy who made the story but the guys who are working on the engine.

Also, two PR mishappenings in a single week? You're on a roll, Ubisoft.

That's sweet, but no.

Are you telling me this GIF doesn't apply?!

I............... actually am not angered by this. If it's not a shooter, 30fps doesn't mean it automatically garbage. And people do get a little crazy about numbers.

900p, 1080p, whatever. If it turns out to be a fun game, who cares?

What happened to just enjoying games?

starts running

As stupid as they're making themselves sound lately, I still take their side over the people freaking out about it. 60fps would be great, but 30fps is perfectly acceptable to me. And I agree 100% with his comments about resolution. All that matters to me is what I see with my own two eyes, I don't give a shit about the mathematics of the pixels. If they hadn't publicized the AC4 patch to 1080p, I doubt I ever would have noticed. Halo 3 looked beautiful to me in all of its 540p glory or whatever it was, and I don't give two shits how many people "pity" me for that. Shove your pity up your ass. AC Unity looks fucking beautiful as-is to me.

However after hearing that game play preview report the other day, I am concerned that it will turn out to be just as much of a buggy, glitchy mess as AC3 was...

No one should pretend 30fps is an artistic choice. It isn't. It's a performance choice. It doesn't look better at all, but it's tolerable (on consoles) and allows extra headroom for technical graphics. That's it.

And I get it, AC Unity is shaping up to be a visually intense game. When GAF first saw the in-engine footage a ton of people thought it was CG. I always expected this to run at 30fps on consoles.

*shrug* and it will still go on to sell millions.

Ubisoft PR better stay away from The Division next year. Stuff like this will make me REALLY dip out of a purchase of this game. I don't care if Division is 30FPS, but don't tout it as The BeeZ NeeZ over 60.

In fact Ubi should follow in Bungie's in shoes for The Division and just not say a word about it until it releases so I stay on track to buy.

Enjoy your filthy soap operas PC gamers, here in the Console Club we'll be having cigars and brandy and enjoying the refined art of playing videogames just like we enjoyed Rossellini and Tarkovsky and Godard before them.
Okay, this got a laugh out of me

That's called having your cake and eating it too, friend.

Is that why they also had a marketing deal with Sony for their big new IP Watch Dogs? They've traditionally been more pro-Sony if they are anything. It's just Ubisoft not some Microsoft conspiracy. Is Microsoft the reason why Black Flag wasn't 1080P out the gate on PS4 or are they the reason why Watch Dogs was only 900p.

Ubisoft has been known for downgrades time after time after time. They probably messed up the engine as rumored and came up with an arbitrary reason why Unity is not running as well as it should on PS4. They could probably rectify the issue if they put more time into the PS4 version, but they're too stubborn to alter their yearly AC release schedule.

Yup, just like how our eyes can't process more than 25fps...

So because it is hard to achieve, you guys are going to give up since you guys lack talents?
Can't wait to see how awesome your brand new/ground up engine is!

there are plenty of film critics that discuss how 24 frames or whatever is unique in that is bears resemblance to dreams

so yes ubi soft is right in that 30fps is by that benchmark more cinematic because of the notion that film has a lower frame rate and how integral it is to the experience

Second, how standard is 60fps gameplay on consoles and others media and platforms? so saying it is easy is dismissive this is an issue everyone is grappling with

I personally feel like there is always more at play than just pissing off gamers when a project is lessened by the absence of a feature

thats just how I see its huge company lots of people it's not that simple

conversely there are better ways I'm sure to handle this

At least this Nicolas Guérin fellow straight-out says it wouldn't gain too much from a frame-rate boost, they want to focus more on the visuals. Though I may not necessarily agree to the fullest, I can understand that vision. But this Alex Amancio says "it (AC:U) actually feels better for people when it's at that 30fps" instead of 60fps.

......Just.......no.......
...Just...........
....no....

so why bother justifying it in the first place? all they are achieving is pissing off the (as you rightly said) 'few that... are still going to buy it anyway'. i don't get what could possibly be motivating them other than "buzz" (ie all news is good news).

Great point. Maybe it's because they said earlier they were targeting it? I'm not sure. Their last two statements have been boneheaded to say the least.

I personally am happy with a locked 30FPS in a nonshooter.

However, the way it came out was just bad. Instead of trying to explain it, they should have said 30FPS allowed them to increase other things for better balance.
