Ace Attorney Community Thread - MUNCHMUNCHMUNCHMUNCHMUNCH

I can't believe we're still waiting on a release date for the AA trilogy on iOS. It's supposed to be out sometime in autumn, and this is the last month.

I'm fucking sick of Capcom treating this series like a bastard child.

Capcom this series very well, very well. At least in Japan. Let's see 5 main series games, 3 spin off games, multiple ports, multiple artbooks, multiple mangas, remixed soundtracks, 3 musicals, 1 full featured movie, web games and lots of small memorabilia.

Capcom of America on the other hand....

I'm playing Justice For All Right Now (Own all the AA games but just now started playing them in order) Gotta say this one is pretty weak compared to the first game especially the cases.
We'll see how the last case goes before I fully judge it, the best thing by far is Franziska Von Karma.

Her and that whip, mmmmmmmmmmm

All of the attention in JFA must have gone to the last case, because while the first three are dull, have bizarrely staged crimes, and are riddled with typos, the last is probably the best in the series.

EDIT: Though I guess that case does have the most famous typo in the series, "The miracle never happen"

So, I just got Apollo Justice for DS. Anything I need to know before going in?

I see this one is going to be a bit more difficult than the WiiWare versions of the three first games. No saving, only suspend saves. Is Apollo Justice really a forced Ironman game? It's going to be a bit of a problem, perhaps. Unless the game is fairly obvious, which hasn't always been the series' strongest point.

well, there is no more of the psych lock thing, which makes stuff a bit more straightforward (never was a big fan of those). And I'm sure you can save o_O.

Difficulty wise, it's about the same the other games has been. And suspended games are an aspect of the the DS versions, only the Wiiware versions have regular saves.

Other than that enjoy, out of the four mainline games, it's my 3rd favorite.

You can still use good old save scumming, it works the same as the other AA games on the saving front, it says suspend but it's not quite as strict as it sounds.

AJ itself isn't that tricky, T&T is a lot more obtuse most of the time so if you got through that then nothing here should be much trouble.

edit: were the wii ware saves different? I have the first game on it and I thought it worked the same as the DS system.

Yeah, I clicked on this thread hoping there may be a release date announced for this I missed hearing about, but guess not. Would love an excuse to replay the AA games, and it would be nice to have them on my iPod.

Yes, Wiiware version saves allowed you to continue playing after you saved.

Ah, so if I suspend save, quite to menu, continue and the get a game over, I can still continue off the save point? Less troublesome.

I was just imagining something like getting the final choice wrong in a case like 3-5 and having to replay the entire last part. That'd be really annoying.

I'm still just up to part two of the opening case. The tutorial case actually has a part two in this? I'm getting the feeling that this game is going to play to my expectations just to subvert them as much as it can. I hope it does, actually. The first three are fun, but do get a little formulaic.

Also, being able to shout OBJECTION! at my DS is more fun than it should be. What commands do you get? "Objection!", "Hold It!" and any more?

I think you can shout "GOTCHA" in AJ and "EUREKA" in AAI as well. And presumably we'll be able to do the same with (Japanese) "CHOTTO" in PLvsAA and "KOKO DA" in AA5.

It must have been.
Also in the game when it says "My teacher said I'm a good thunker" that's a typo right?
I have no clue what a thunker is and believe it was supposed to be thinker.

That one might have been an intentional joke.

Also the first and second cases in JFA are really good so I don't get where this only the last case is worth it nonsense is coming from.

Okay, I competed the first episode of AJ.

I believe the right choice of words for this is "What the... huh?" It starts out as just your average tutorial, and then... it goes nuts. My prediction that this game will take my expectations and subvert them are most certainly coming true. If THAT is the tutorial, I can't wait to see the final boss.

This is going to be interesting...

So is there some official website for the AAI2 fan translation project? I want to see how it's coming along!

Hoooooo, I just completed a replay of AJ not long ago. Final boss is not like... particularly mindblowing or anything (but still good!) but the final investigation portion is like nothing you could ever imagine. imo the first episode is subject to all sorts of amazing. Best first case in AA, hands down. The rest of the cases are par for the course, so don't get your hopes too high up.

I now get the thread title. That gets annoying really fast. Apollo Justice is still pretty fun, though.

Up to some way into case 3 now. Finished the first trial part. That was one tough Perceive I had to do in that one. That trial part sure took an odd turn in the end.

The second case was... Interesting, although I had the shooter's position figured out a lot earlier than the game would let me. And, of course. Panties. Panties belong to a teenage girl no less. Who can't stop talking about all the magic things that are in her panties. Of course, she is actually talking about a stage prop but still... And they just show up over and over as evidence. It's funny, but also a little weird. Loved that the Judge called Apollo out on it at the end. "Show evidence that the car couldn't run!" "PANTIES!" Correct.

Ah well, still looking forward to forging on. This game isn't that easy, though. Some of the leaps of logic, not to mention Perceive parts are just odd. It's a fun power, though.

And with the customary final OBJECTION! Apollo Justice draws to a close for me.

Fun game, it both benefits and suffers from being kind of standalone in the series. It has a very economical cast of characters, especially once you unravel the final case, which I'll get to in a moment, I did legitimately not see a lot of the twists coming, even though they should be visible in hindsight. Perceive is a fun power, but some of those spots are just fiendishly hard to find. Could also have used a fast-forward button in Perceive Mode. (And now someone will tell me that there is one...)

The final case, though, deserves a special mention. I'm not sure if it worked out as well as it could, but the the concept behind it was solid. Even if it pretty showed that although the box says "Apollo Justice", we all know who the real deal in Ace Attorney is. Phoenix "
I just spent seven years reforming the justice system to catch one evil man
"
Wright. I mean... Consider how scary that man is in court when he doesn't have time to plan... This just showed how good he really is. Also, from the beginning of the first trial part in the last chapter, something interesting happens.
You play as Lamirior watching the trial as a jurist. Also she's Trucy mother. And Apollo's as they're siblings. Which does bring up a minor... contradiction. She's blind, yet she is not only following the trials, but using a graphics only interface in the MASON system.
But that's a nitpick.

Speaking of Phoenix,
I liked playing as him in the middle part. Quite a different Phoenix Wright that in the first three games. Cool confident, and pretty much a man who lives up to his reputation. If it wasn't for the forged evidence that Gavin gave him.
This bodes well for AA5.

Speaking of the next Ace Attorney game, we're getting a worldwide release on that, right? Also, is Investigations worth looking into? There was a sad case of lack of Edgeworth in Apollo Justice...

Investigations is worth looking into for any AA fan, though I consider the weakest game from a writing standpoint it has various points in its favour, one of the strongest soundtracks, a new way to go about investigation sequences that alleviates some of the aimless wandering that may happen in previous entries, 5 cases and all are directly linked together making up an overarching plot.
So assuming you've enjoyed every entry so far AAI is certainly worth a shake.

Agreed; AJ has the best first case in the series. It stops being a tutorial pretty damn fast, and is the only first case in the series to have multiple twists.

I was disappointed when AAI took a step back and outright showed us who the murderer was in a cutscene up front.

I just finished the first episode in Ace Attorney. So far I like the look and feel of the game. I've been exhausted from work, so I didn't want to try to force myself to play it.

I'll continue the other episodes when I'm not feeling so tired.

You have no idea how jealous I am that you're experiencing this series for the first time. I wish I could forget everything and go in fresh.

Any interest in an import OT for Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney when it drops next week?

You know a lot of Japanese right? It'd be really generous of you to do it if you like. I'm sure many people would like it, although I would stay away because I want it to go in blind when it show up over here haha.

I'm far from fluent, but I just finished playing AAI2 with almost no issues, so I figure I'm in pretty good straits for PLvsAA. In any event, I'm importing it (digitally) day one.

It's just a shame there's no way to get direct capture off a 3DS short of that one modding site that charges a pretty hefty fee, or I'd take videos and screens throughout.

Apparently Capcom is releasing 123HD later this year. But it's Capcom so...

They said that they'd be coming sometime in Fall. Which gives them 9 days. But I'm not holding my breath; expecting Capcom USA/Europe to treat this series with any kind of compentence is incredibly fucking optimistic.

Finally beat AA3 and Miles Edgeworth this week.
I have to say these 2 games represent to me why the series is so great.
If I were to rank what i've played I'd put them in this order.

3, ME, 1, 2

I'm about to play 4 but I don't hold very much hope since everyone seems to agree that 4 and 2 are the worse of the bunch.

Talking about Miles Edgeworth, seriously aside from sales I can't believe Capcom is never going to bring that game over (Sure they said they might but that's the biggest load of bull i've ever read). Were the sales really that bad in the US and EU? Would have thought they'd at least do a limited release like they did with the rest of the games aside from 1.

Doing a replay of this series and just finished AA1.

I'd said before that my favorite case of that game was 1-4, because of its importance and relevance to the story, and it's still awesome (
cross examinating the parrot!
), but goddamn at that 1-5.
The part where you think Ema really killed the man and the game runs with it for a while is fantastic.
I love the struggle that Lana had to go through in the defendant's chair. Also, Gant rules. I'd probably rank it just above 1-4 now. That whole game really is awesome though.

Now I'll have to slog through the mediocre 2-1 through 2-3, but I'm excited to play 2-4 again, since that's one of - if not the best case in the series, and I've only done it once.

People unfairly hate on Apollo Justice mainly because it has a (mostly) new cast of characters. It's actually a great game, and easily up there with the original. It's certainly nowhere near as weak as AA2.

Having played each of those once each so far, AA2 is better in my opinion. In Apollo Justice, I remember not liking Phoenix's characterization or the plans of the main villain, and those were pretty important things so it hampered my experience. I liked the villain in the first case - that was easily my favorite in the game - but wasn't really a fan of the final case. The game still had great side characters, music, and drama of course, it just didn't attach me as much as the others. AA2 had the problem of poor writing in the first case, and overly absurd plots in the second and third, but the fourth is so well done that it puts it over the edge.

For me the two tiers were games that I thought were great: AA3, AA1

and good: AA2, Investigations, and Apollo Justice

I'd probably rate them in that order, but it's a series where everything is high quality. I might switch Investigations around after I replay it. Since the final boss encounter of that one is so annoying, it left a bad taste, but I remember the full game being really good. It'll likely move ahead of AA2.
