Activated the Facebook timeline? Now everyone can see your old private conversations.

Go check your PM inbox (it goes back to then, too) and find me a wall post which matches a PM. :P

After checking, I think you're right. The 'PM' I saw was in reference to a private conversation that occurred in PM, but she must have posted to my wall about it.

I have timeline activated. Now all I can think of is...

Go to Account > Privacy Settings and then select this option:

Limit the Audience for Past Posts
Limit the audience for posts you shared with friends of friends or Public
I think that might fix it.

Yeah, you get this warning if you click that:
If you use this tool, content on your timeline you've shared with friends of friends or Public will change to Friends. Remember: people who are tagged and their friends may see those posts as well.
Facebook crisis averted.

I just checked mine and there are private messages, NOT wall posts on there. Maybe your accounts dont show that. I dont know what else to say...

Just checked mine, definitely PMs from way back. Thank god nothing too crazy. They need to fix this shit.

One of you guys, double check it this way:

-See what the date of said PM-as-wall-post is.
-Go to your inbox.
-Look at the same date.
-Is it a PM?

THIS IS BULLSHIT. I've been searching for a good half hour and can't find one good cybar session. Someone link me to some of their friend's hot shit.

Timeline is ugly as shit. That should be enough reason.

This. I'm all for the cover image thing as a unique thing, but Timeline itself is a mess. And Facebook's further privacy issues make me lol and am glad I hardly ever use it.

just checkled the timeline of the biggest whore i know, scanned maybe half? of the 500~ posts from 2009 and was mainly looking for dirty talk or phone numbers, didnt see either, dont think there were any PMs showing, or else she is far more wholesome than everyone i know thinks, lol.

Artifacts from a time when Facebook was limited to college kids. When you don't think anyone other than classmates could see, you post things that might strike others as PM material looked at from a modern-FB perspective. These aren't private messages.

Ok after all that I checked and cant find a supposed PM that is also in my Inbox so I think Im wrong. I was so sure because alot of the messages were things my gf sent that I was sure wouldnt be on my wall. So hopefully thats that.

Cool, everything seems to be in order. Just a bit of confusion.

Ok good

No wait, I went to another friend's page and the messages there seem a bit more private. That, or people were posting some random stuff on his wall

edit: nevermind, I guess. You can click the message, and choose to like or comment. So I guess the more private messages I saw were on a wall after all

I agree with everyone saying it is only Wall Posts. There are no PMs in there at all. They may seem like that, but it was because (as said earlier) people used to have conversations that way.

I hate to say that you guys are wrong or mis-remembering, but there are no PMs in there. Just Wall Posts. Now, the first person to prove me wrong will make me change my mind. But it is just people not paying attention....again.

Timeline is atrocious from a basic readability standpoint. Glad I left when I did, regardless if this rumour turns out to be true.

They only seem random because you can't see his end of the conversation, because back then you couldn't yet talk in one thread. He said something on their wall, then they replied on his, etc.

Remember that Facebook used to be limited to people with .edu emails. People were posting publicly to your wall back when they assumed your parents or coworkers would never see it. It's a good idea to go back and remove any posts you don't want public.

If you click on the actual comment you can actually see the back and forth as they posted on eachothers walls.

This thread is another example of why courts should never rely solely on eyewitness testimony.

"I know what's a PM and what's a wall post because I don't have Alzheimer's you idiots!"

...

"Oops, never mind."

You're getting 2009 mixed up with 2005. Facebook has been open to the general public (anyone over the age of 13) for well over five years now, officially sometime in 2006. People are talking about messages from 2009 - by then Facebook was already the most popular social networking site in the world with over 200 million users.

Not that this isn't all a little premature, I have no idea, just saying.

They're not PM's. A lot of people used to talk from profile to profile, before you could 'comment' on things. So they had conversations in public, yes. You won't find anything private.

Stop being so paranoid.

I think people are referencing things pre-2009 mostly. It became hugely popular during that year so people still treated it as they had been up to that point.

The fuck...? I thought it was only your past wallposts and similiar stuff. Major fuck up if some one can see my private messages regardless whether they're pointless or important.

I actually agreed to accept the timeline voluntarily out of curiousity. Is there any way to turn it off... ? While I still can?

I thought the Timeline was going to get turned on for everyone a few weeks ago, when it activated itself on my profile and said I could edit it before publishing. Did that get cancelled or something? Cause I never published my timeline, yet it's now turned on and everyone can see it.

It'd be nice if the timeline showed my class schedules from 2005. I wonder if those are still sitting in a database somewhere.
