What actor/actress do you think has done the most for their part? As in who's gone the deepest into their character. Affected their lives the most.

My vote goes to Christian Bale in The Machinist.

He lost 60 pounds to play the part. He was a 120 pounds for the role.

I heard about that role, but never saw the film or any stills from it.

I assume he had to put on the weight again and then bulk up for Batman Begins.

Winner by default.

I went to WAGs boutique and all I got was a sniff
Bloody Hell, he's bloody skinny. Im not sure if I can think of anything more difficult, however, Jim Carey comes to mind with The Grinch:

He spent 6 HOURS EVERYDAY putting on and taking off that make up.

I used to think that De Niro was the king for Raging Bull. Like Bale, he went from two extremes, going from having the body of a mid-weight boxer to having forcing himself to eat three large meals a day for nearly a year so he could look like someone whose gone out of control with their health.

It seems like more actors are doing these kinds of things these days, but that was extreme. I'm surprised De Niro didn't fuck himself up from that.

Yeah, it's going to be hard to top that one, so I won't even try and just list another instance of an actor doing a lot for one part.

That would be Jim Carrey for Man on the Moon. Picking fights with Jerry Lawler for be publicity, instisting on people calling him Andy on the set, stuff like that.

I heard there's some actors that get so involved in their parts that it's hard for them to go back to being themselves at the end of the day.

If I was an actor, that would be my goal, to become completely involved with the part where it becomes hard to differentiate the part with myself.

If only someone like you played the role of someone like Docter Evil.

I met Cantona on a press trip once. He told me to fuck off.
So I went back to my hotel he was paying for and spent 3,000 Euros on dinner for two. The winner was me.

On topic, I think De Niro for Raging Bull has to be up there. That was fucking astonishing. Still is.

Or John Holmes. He did do a lot for his part. (You saw it coming right?)
(Oh god, it won't stop!)
(Etc...)

Will Farrell! They say he was completely ripped when he joined SNL but when he thought it'd be funny if he was way out of shape, he just started packin pounds and wearing tiny shirts

Anyone that's gone through significant weight loss/gain is a hero to me. Like Renée Zellweger. She was skinny in Chicago but gained what, like 50 pounds for the second bridget jones? then lost it all again? Just nuts.

Jeff Danials stopped putting conditioner in his hair for 5 months prior to filming dumb and dumber to get the frizzy look

Some honorable mentions:

Stallone put on quite a gut for Cop Land. Charlie Sheen, who has never been physically impressive in the least, was absolutely ripped in Hot Shots Part Deux.

they call me "Man Gravy".
Well, I would argue that Marlon Brando did more for acting as a whole by really establishing "method acting" and really taking on character traits of the roles that he played. But I'm guessing that's not what you meant by "done the most for his/her part"

It's quite common for method actors to perform certain physical activities to steep themselves in their parts; i.e. Dustin Hoffman (one of the biggest Stanislavskyists around) sleep depriving himself for some scenes in Marathon Man. To which, by the way, Lauence Olivier replied, "Why don't you try acting?" (not a method actor).

Dustin Hoffman then quiped "Eat me, you British !@&"
