What was ABC thinking?
Yanked 'Neighborhood' catches it from all sides

NEW YORK (AP) -- ABC's extraordinary cancellation of "Welcome to the Neighborhood" less than two weeks before its premiere proves that reality television can only handle so much reality.

...

"Welcome to the Neighborhood" followed three families in a comfortable cul-de-sac near Austin, Texas, given the chance to choose who moves in when a neighbor moves out of a 3,300-square-foot home on their block. Each family is white, conservative and initially interested in neighbors like them.

Instead, they have a rainbow coalition of choices: a black family; a Hispanic family; an Asian family; two gay white men who've adopted a black boy; a couple covered in tattoos and piercings; a couple who met at the woman's initiation as a witch; and a white family where mom is a stripper.

After the usual reality show contrivances -- voting a family out each week after a competition to give one family immunity -- the winning family gets the house.

...

Bigotry and reality TV all in one convenient package! I'm surprised they didn't put in a family that was white, but also atheist Democrats.

I saw the previews.. I was like WTF?
Thats just wrong!

Needed to be canceled..

The question is,

How did this one get so far into production!

Ahh, "near Austin, TX". I was going to say, IN Austin, TX this would be fairly normal; but once you start leaving the liberal speck of Texas that is Austin, you begin to meet the kind of people that love, and still love, Bush. Regardless, I'm not the least bit phased by this. Reality TV has seen worse.

i wish people would protest all the other reality tv crap with their carefully selected demographic of minorities and non heterosexuals too...

i mean, it's not like this show did anything all the others didnt do...

i wish it DID air, it would only help to speed up people's hate for reality tv in general...

What's the problem? Didn't the show ultimately reveal that a bunch of the white bigots overcame their prejudice and came to accept some of the families? I'm not sure why the show was cancelled.

Pretty much so. This is also why those "celebrity tabloid news" programs are also big. People (in general, not necessarily Americans) love watching others fail because it makes themselves feel "higher" than the person being humiliated.

I DO hope however that all of this reality TV crap culminates in a live-action version of the Running Man or Smash TV

This isnt as bad (in theory) as the British show where Men competed for the affections of a girl for 6 weeks only to find out she was actually a pre-op trans-sexual at the end.

It would have been a great opportunity to show that White conservative texan communities arent as bad as people think. Clearly the fact that it cant be aired shows that they are actually much worse than people think.

Ok... so what happened at the end besides that disclosure? Did anyone still try to get with her?
