Without spoiling (haven't watched it yet), can somebody give me the short on why this anime is revered? To me it just looks too wacky and absurd to be taken as a great piece of work.

You all should join ToonamiGAF, at least.

Is Adult Swim the new Netflix?
AS/Toonami have dabbled in stuff like this here and there over the years. But it being the established home of action cartoons while every one else abandons the genre in the West? It may as well be.

Giving themselves almost a full 2 year lead time atleast shows me this won't be a quick and dirty cash grab.

Kind of excited, but also kind of worried. FLCL was pretty perfect as it was. Not sure what more seasons would add. A spiritual sequel like space dandy was to bebop would be cool but a direct sequel? I'll have to wait and see.

I love FLCL because of the music, the characters, and the weird humor.

Hiroyuki Imaishi, who directed Kill la Kill, directed FLCL. Do you like the humor of Kill la Kill? A lot of that humor is in FLCL.

Edit: He was the animation director according to Wikipedia.

The point is that if the original FLCL was too risque for them they could have edited it for TV or not showed it at all. You are literally worrying about nothing.

I disagree. I don't think re-airing something 3 years ago that they deemed ok 15 years ago is the same as co-producing a new show.

Other than being an animation wet dream, it's an anime that has a lot of themes going on without anyone monologuing what they are. It's one of those productions where you notice new things every re-watch and things click together.

You're saying this with a Kill la Kill avatar? Haha

I like kill la kill because the chicks are hot and Ryuko is my fantasy waifu.

The same concept doesn't really apply to FLCL.

I didn't know that the director was the same though, that piques my interest.

Oh, i knew Imaishi worked on it but i didn't know he actually was the director. Will watch asap then.

Edit:Oh, animation director.Still will watch asap.

Do I even want this? I like, maybe even love, FLCL but part of that is because it was so short. And inexplicable. Ah well. People are happy and I'm happy for them.

In that case, it would be something like Calvin and Hobbes being revived by a cartoonist who is (probably (hopefully?)) skilled, but who is also probably not Watterson. Fortunately even though I love FLCL it's not as insanely important to me as C&H so I'm not totally outraged by this like I would be by my C&H example.

Now I perfectly understand.

It's funny, because I can't relate to these points at all, and KLK is my second favourite anime I've ever watched.

But yeah, if you like KLK, FLCL is stylistically in the same ball park. It goes WAY harder on the symbolism ans deconstruction than KLK though.

Ah I guess I'm just confused.

Imaishi's wikipedia says he was the animation director of FLCL. That's probably why I was confused.

Animation Director (sakuga kantoku) means the person who oversees the animation of an episode, looking at all the drawings and correcting them as necessarily to achieve the desired quality and effect. It's not the same as the overall director for the series who is responsible for everything. Imaishi was an animation director for two episodes of FLCL and worked on the storyboard for three.

FLCL never had anything worse than your average risque Family Guy or American Dad episode. Heck, one of Adult Swim's original hit shows Rick and Morty features a comedic scene where one of the main characters is trying to avoid getting raped. There's nothing in the original that would have to be toned down for an American adult audience on the network, so the same can be said for how the sequel will turn out.

Thanks for the clarification.

I still think anyone who enjoys Kill la Kill should give FLCL a watch.

What on earth? I'm not sure how I feel about this, but it's super weird timing since I just rewatched FLCL on hulu last night.

Editing mah post

FLCL is my favorite anime. This could be cool if it's going to be inspired in some way but if they're just making more episodes for the sake of making more I don't want this.

Judging by his twitter, I guess this project is his dream as a fan?
Let's hope for the better! Still can't process the fact that this is actually a thing!

Yeah, in their weekly show toonami pre-flight way back when they mentioned how CN/AS was this close to funding a second season of FLCL and was willing to throw mad cash at the idea. It's clearly something DeMarco and his team has wanted to make happen for a long time. It's clearly a passion project for them to see it happen, that doesn't guarantee it'll be good but it should at least dissuade people who think this'll be a cynical cash grab only.

The right stuff is coming out of Lich's keyboard, at least. Not that the original guys thinking returning to the well is inherently smart and good, but it's better than it being spearheaded by [as] or I.G.

So Adult Swim is bringing back Samurai Jack AND FLCL. Amazing.

Oh man, though. When I went backpacking a couple years back, I decided on bringing one piece of literature to bring with me while travelling. It was either the bible, or the FLCL manga omnibus. I chose the omnibus for no particular other reason than I didn't believe I had the attention span for the bible, surprisingly half-decent read it actually is.

So uh, yeah. Legit shook.

"Much of the voice cast" has me a little bit worried because I was hoping for a story with mostly new characters, but makes sense I guess. Glad they could get them.

Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Fucking shit, wow, I'm losing it right now!

If they fuck this up, things will happen randomly with guitars and foreheads.

Also AS/Toonami would lose that special place in my heart. Honestly, because I hope the original head directors that are on board as being involved. Aren't solely doing this for the fat check they get, if they let the new guys on the block shit this out. Without the love and care a OVA provides rather then regular TV.

Also is FLCL even that popular or regarded highly in Japan? given the culture and how fast they fall in and out of trends. Compared to western countries.
